I can understand Oxford United supporters having fond memories of Appleton but you're the only one of the seven clubs he's been at where he achieved any success.
I can forgive you for wiping his play-off final with Lincoln out of your mind considering they knocked your lot out in the semis 😉

...but yeah, you are right.

I'd go Richardson. The job he did at Wigan very similar to this, and a seemingly decent bloke too, which I think will be important after the last year and some of the antics that have occurred.

Could we appoint Des Buckingham on a temporary basis now his season has finished with a view to possible longer term appointment?
Local connection and could be left of field up and coming coach?
Will he want to just come over till May?

My preferred shortlist -
1 Nathan Jones
2 Des Buckingham
3 Chris Wilder (many wouldn't like this)
4 Appleton till the end of season initially (Given Derek still involved would be quick to get done)
Suspect it will be someone we haven't heard of

I am not very comfortable with the current setup remaining but understand why.

He would have to be full time as he's part of the City Group, In my opinion he would be the perfect person for the job. Started with our age groups, promoted by CW, has been successful in NZ, Australia and India. I believe he was at OUFC at the same time as Stevie Kinniburgh - what a great pair to fulfil the board's ambitions and see us to our new stadium and beyond.

Fingers crossed - would dread a quick fix short term out of work manager - the Cowley's, Dean Smith, Nathan Jones, Steve Bruce, Mark Warbuton in that category

Why not if could land job permanently or decent bonus for keeping us up? Win win potentially
He would be the first person I would sound out. Simple yes or no question: are you interested in discussing this job? If yes, do whatever it takes to open negotiations immediately.

Unfortunately, I believe he’s destined for greater things as part of the City Football Group and he only signed a new deal in India a few months ago, but all you can ever do is ask.

I am not very comfortable with the current setup remaining but understand why.

Jones got a 12month pay off of his Southampton contract. With his emphasis on athleticism and physicality he couldn’t inherit a worse squad for his style of football.

Buckingham would be an exciting choice but would be tough to get him out of the City Group machine.

A name yet to be mentioned: Daniel Stendel

As I’ve said before, I feel uneasy about us making a long-term Head Coach appointment when we haven’t got a Director of Football in place. We’d be repeating the same mistakes again.

I also really hope the club are speaking to people with a track record of appointing successful managers in the EFL. We lack that expertise but, if we aren’t going to appoint a DOF to do it, then the services can at least be bought short-term.

Of the managerial merry-go-round candidates Appleton is the one I’d want as his relationship with the fans and the club negates a bit of my above worries. He’s been here and he’s done it, so let him do it again.

Voted Richardson simply because he has experience with struggling league one sides. Had the call been made months ago it should have been a new DOF and someone like Des Buckingham.

Steve Cotterill. Gets teams organised and hard to play against which would give us a fighting chance.

In the more likely scenario of League 2 he has won that league with Notts County.

Or Des Buckingham.
