Dot Counting Northampton 10k Crowd

Attendance tracking
Decent sales for a Tuesday of 175 gross, but 18 tickets have come back onto sale in Block 12, meaning a net of just over 150. At least the club have put these tickets up for sale a little earlier than previous weeks this season, when they have often left it until Thursday or even Friday.

This leaves us at 7,150 at midnight last night. For context, if we still use Blackpool and Wycombe as our barometer, we are about 250 higher than Blackpool and 50 higher than Wycombe, at this stage, so still on target for about 10,200/10,300 total.

Still no sign of that marketing from the club though, unless I missed it?

Only one the club have posted recently is this.

So hopefully 3 crowds of 10k+ in a row.
I reckon 2 out of the following games are likely to be 10k ( Pompey and Reading), so this is really going in the right direction.
Excellent news if the new stadium comes off....

It's remarkable really that 10k crowds are now becoming the norm.

My first proper season in 95/96 (when we were also challenging for promotion from the third tier) had lots of crowds of around 6,000. I appreciate that the Manor didn't allow for bigger crowds (with only 7,500 in the promotion decider against the Posh), but the appetite for football in Oxfordshire is clearly there.

As you say, bodes well for a new ground hopefully...

We're on track to see a season total of around 213,000 fans watching league games at Oxford. That is a number that we have only exceeded (on my living memory) in 85/86, our first season in Division 1 which included the League Cup win.

To put this in perspective, this will be 20,000 more fans than last season and over 45,000 more fans than our last full season before covid.

And this all happens at a soulless, cold and miserable stadium with marketing that is OK (I've softened my stance a little) but still a little bland and uninspiring.

We know from all the work @Colin B has highlighted, that new stadiums see a huge uplift in attendance and performances. This can only bode well for the future, off the back of the organic growth we're already seeing.

Better get used to that for a while because, with the current pace of progress, we`ll be there for a while yet.............. as for the marketing its absolute cack - you do a better job!

I had a look at current average league attendance (~ 9,100) against the reported league average for 1995/96 (~5,800....that fits with my rough recollection). That means the current average is 57% larger.

For comparison, the Oxfordshire population has increased to 740,000 in the 2022 census, a change of around 26% against the reported figure for 1996.

Our attendance is growing, and it's not merely an artefact of population growth. It should also be seen in context of an unpopular and poorly situated stadium.

Indeed. My wife and kids would likely change from two or three games a season to something like half (or perhaps even season tickets for all) if the facilities were more welcoming. They're not huge football fans, but enjoy the day out generally despite all of the Kassam's terrible elements (location, lack of public transport, poor facilities) and have also said they would go more often if their experience on the day was improved.

Just under 200 sales up to midnight last night, which is pretty good for a Wednesday. So we're over 7,300 home GA sales and still ahead of both Blackpool and Wycombe games at this stage by the same amounts as yesterday's count.

I'll stick with my 10,200/10,300 estimate for now, but it could be higher, as this is when sales usually ramp up, and the weather forecast is crisp, dry and bright, which is ideal for football.

1.00pm update on Thursday and we are currently at 7,341 home seat sales meaning there are 2,213 seats left so no great momentum behind sales so far today.

Add in boxes (estimated 250) and the Northampton sold out away sales (1,471) and we are around 9,060 total estimated sales at present.

Remaining seats are pretty evenly spread across the stands -

South Stand Lower 624
South Stand Upper 503
East Stand 531
North Stand 555

There are quite a few I know waiting to see whether the game will be on before buying tickets.

it'll be on ...

I wouldn’t bet on that…my back garden’s in the sun and still frozen solid, the next two nights are below freezing again so i doubt whether it will thaw in time for Saturday afternoon.
Unless the club have had adequate covers on the pitch.

The club also has heaters I believe too.

It'll be on, forecast is for warmer damper weather by Saturday. Plus I'm sure the groundstaff will have 'industrial hairdryers' or similar.

I think the club also have professional ground staff who may have experience of cold weather.
Ooh yeah, that too. Why they persist in not looking after my own garden, I simply do not know.

I wondered when the first posts about it being off would be, going to be a balmy 6 degrees on Saturday, shorts weather, so it will be on.

Looking forward to it. The Grimsby game went ahead in colder day time temperatures after a frosty night.

Very difficult game though they're in decent firm and will raise their game for their cup final.
