As we are in the midst of the Transfer window (and the MLB trade deadline in the US), I have been thinking about the difference between Football and US sports transfers.

One things that I really enjoy about the major American sports is the trading of talent both ways with almost every NFL, MLB or NBA player transfer and the players moving are the cornerstones of the transfer rather than as a makeweight to reduce the transfer fee. These kinds of moves are frequently quoted in speculation but rarely seem to happen however, it is more typical in the Serie A and La Liga.

I appreciate that the contracts in Football mean that this kind of transfer less likely as US sports players have far fewer rights over their ability to change teams but with the current financial squeeze on clubs, will these kinds of deals increase or will players still just be used as makeweights?
