Home Match Day Thread +++ 31/08/2019 L1: OUFC vs Coventry City +++

Recon the not finishing chances will be sorted by Ageiy (or however you spell his name) and Taylor coming in. Defending really needs looking at, no idea how to fix it, Dickie is a good defender and Moore has shown some bright glimpses, think it might be chance to give Long a run in the team, helped out defensive record last season when he came in, recon he could do the same this season

Edit - also think a pacy winger could help

I think it's a consequence of the way Robinson wants to play and the fact we don't have the players to do it. The players are all so desperate to get forward and create/score a goal that we're exposed far too often defensively. Probably the biggest single culprit of this is Cadden, but I don't necessarily blame him I just think it's how he's told to play.

Strangely enough I think the solution is to add more pace out wide. As good as some of Henry's performances have been, he never beats his man one on one and so constantly needs someone to overlap him in order to create the necessary space for a cross.

Oh, and that f*****g drum!!! I hope it rips and costs the owner a lot of money to repair or replace. Or better they abandoned it!

It wasn't keeping the beat, at times it was all you could hear from them. Our 3rd goal had the added bonus of shutting them up.

I don’t think Cadden can be dropped after that game can he - basically was our main outlet down the right and for us back into the game!

Henry doesn’t always track his man back or have the pace to get back. And our centre midfielders go missing at times.

I liked Mackie’s post match interview. Setting aside him constantly repeating himself there is obviously a real desire there and hopefully he can score some more himself and take his own advice on working on details. He has put his finger on what is wrong at the moment and I’m certain we’ll be pushing up the table once we get players back and Moore bedded into defence. I think. We still need a left back though!!

Oh yeah. Their fans today
giphy.gif

Why?

Sold out their allocation and made a load of noise all game. They had a small proportion who gave it large but let's not pretend our fans weren't just as embarrassing.

I'd rather be playing teams like Coventry who have a proper fanbase over the likes of Fleetwood next week.

According to the Ox mail, he’s carrying a groin injury

Yeah, that’s why he was rested on Tuesday. I was surprised he started to be honest as most reports prior to the game seemed to suggest he wouldn’t play.

Even though he wasn’t his normal self I’d rather a half fit Brannagan than Hanson.

Some good some bad today. Kinda obvious given the scoreline

Bottom line is, despite being individually good defenders, we are disorganised too often and for their second and third goals they just played through us.

But weirdly, I don't think any of the defensive 5 had a bad game.

My first game seeing Moore and thought he was good, using the ball well and positionally sound.

Dickie continues to be as much of a threat going forward as back

Cadden continues to be our main outlet for attack

Ruffs does what Ruffs does and works hard, with moments to push forward.

Whilst I love Brann, i do think he and Gorrin need to be sharper positionally, and there were a few careless touches from him. As ever, his hard work and non stop running makes up for that to some degree, but errors are errors. He'll learn and will be playing at a better level shortly after he does, I am sure. Gorrin, similar...works hard, does good work, but will cost us free kicks around the box and give away chances until he learns

Woodburn is an odd one. He may be getting targeted by opposition teams, given his rep, because he seems to struggle to have impact on occasion.

I though Henry was class throughout today, and was constantly creative and driving

Fosu for me changed the game, with his direct passing in and around the box.

I look forward to him and Taylor playing together as I think they will cause teams serious issues.

Mackie did what Mackie does and I was delighted with his finish having missed the one in the first half. His physical limitations are offset with his football head and attitude.

I agreed with his post match view, If we can organise ourselves defensively better, the points will come.

Finally caught my breath after that. Felt like we could have won that as much as we could have lost it.

Fosu really did make a difference when he came on, he’s a real asset.

On another note the Coventry support was fantastic, ours was quite mediocre which was a real shame.

Top 7 and we've played Blackpool, Coventry, Sunderland and Peterborough and, arguably, outplayed each of them. I know there will be those who point to us only getting 5 points, and (as KR said, there are no medals for playing well at the end of the season), but it shows that we're not far away.

I thought KR, Moore and Mackie all spoke well.on RadOx tonight. They know that there are mistakes and are not hiding away from them. Dickie and Moore will get better. Brannagan and Gorrin won't let others break so easily. Taylor and Ageyi will help turn chances into goals. And everyone, from Robinson down, will continue to fight for everything.

To look at our points tally or league position and make comparisons to last season can only be from those to don't go to the games. We're close to clicking, and when we do, we'll terrify some of the teams in this league.

What a mental 2nd half that was!

We were the better team in the first half, but missed some absolute sitters, and they got one chance, and scored, bloody typical!

2nd half, we absolutely battered them, with constant pressure, good attacking football, and chance after chance, with countless crosses, which worryingly, only their own defenders seemed able to score from!

We really need someone playing in the middle, who can anticipate the crosses coming in, make the correct runs, and get on the end of them, as if we had such a player, we would have scored a bag full today, but I believe its only a matter of time before we give someone an absolute pasting!

I love Mackie, his commitment and effort is admirable, and he took his goal really well, but he's not going to get us the goals we need, he misses too many easy chances, and the sooner the likes of Agyei and Taylor are fit, the better.

Henry was absolutely outstanding, passing, dribbling, crossing, tackling, he really was a class act, and his link up play with Cadden, who again, was excellent going forward, was a joy to watch.

Fosu and Baptiste coming on changed the game, and our intensity level, sense of urgency, and direction went up a notch, and they have to start next Saturday.

Woodburn, again, fades in and out of the game too much, and other than his great volley that hit the post, and a couple of nice touches, isn't doing enough to claim a starting place at the moment, the same goes for Forde, good bits and bobs, but can't see him keeping his place next week.

Brannagan was excellent, although he did waste possession a few times in the first half, when we had half our team in the final third, and instead of keeping it simple, and playing someone through the middle, he played Hollywood balls out wide, and the moves broke down.

Gorrin was very solid, and did the dirty work well.

Eastwood was at fault for the 1st goal, and seems out of sorts a bit this season for some reason, but his save in the 2nd half was more the Easty we all know and love, and was massively important.

The defence was a shambles, all over the place for the 2nd and 3rd goals.
Dickie again, brought the ball out of defence well, but needs better support from his centre back partner, as although Moore had his best game so far, I'm still not convinced by him, he seems slow and immobile, and while Ruffels put in his usual shift, doing some good things here and there, he's still not performing to the level he did last season, and overall defensively, as a unit, they are not performing well, and it need addressing ASAP, because we can't keep coming from behind every week, and 13 goals conceded in the last 5 games is simply not good enough.

Still a lot of positives to take away from the game though, and no need to panic yet, but the serious defensive frailties, and lack of cutting edge in the final third cannot be ignored.

Also, very embarrassed by the behaviour of both sets of fans in the North stand during the 2nd half, absolute disgrace, grow the f**k up!

Bring on Fleetwood.

We played Coventry at a similar stage last season and were feeble. We’re a much better side now

Damn is it Fleetwood next? My least favourite team. Bit harsh on Forde I thought, he’s more of a midfielder than a winger but a pretty useful player

We don’t seem to have much of a home end any more! I guess a lot of the likely lads go in the North stand

Scotchers : Do you think KRob has got something up his sleeve for Monday’s transfer deadline ? I know
he seemed to dampen things down by saying he’s happy with what he’s got but in the cold light of tomorrow
after today’s thrills and spills he might think he needs another body in the building.

I thought at times we were superb - Cov got seriously worked over as we used the full pitch but in transition
we looked very suspect. Strange because with the ball the Oxford midfield looks top draw. Insane
to think we can add Thorne and Baptiste to that when fully fit!

Good game but I lost count of the number of times we missed an open goal. I will bring my abacus to the next game.:)
