Ex Player Rob Dickie

Nope. None of those players have impressed me at all when I’ve seen them play, apart from Foden and Bellingham.

All modern day pansies, more interested in quiffs, tattoos and social media.

Where’s the players of the talent and stature of Gerrard, Beckham, Scholes, Owen, Rooney, Lampard, Shearer, Neville, Ferdinand, Cole...

Alright they didn’t win anything with England, mainly because they were stitched up with useless clowns for managers, but they won absolutely everything at club level, and were truly world class players, that you were excited to see in the squad before every tournament, and fair enough, they should’ve done better than 4 quarter finals, but like I say, they had crap managers, but they were so passionate about playing for England, in a way that these modern day players don’t seem to be, half of them look like they think they’re models not footballers.
Modern day pansies? You seem to have a problem with our well turned out gay players. And was anyone really excited to see Neville, Ferdinand, etc in the squad?

Maguire or Ferdinand? Stones or Terry? Chilwell/Shaw or Cole, Alexander-Arnold or Neville? Sancho or Beckham? Rice or Gerrard? Bellingham or Scholes? Rashford or Rooney? Sterling or Owen? I could go on...

Give both generations a good manager, and I know which team I’d back to be more successful.

In defence of Mad Dog, the managers the "golden generation" had were unthinkably terrible. What were we thinking giving the job to the likes of Sven, McLaren, Capello?
Exactly. Those players didn’t stand a chance with those clowns in charge.

Well I'm not going to argue that any of those three were inspirational!

Still, to achieve as little as they actually did, under three different managers?

It's hard for me to accept that much of the golden generation hype was anything other than media bullshit.

Have a look at their records against Southgate's.
Capello had an unbelievable record.
The whole 'golden generation' was hype and ultimately the players were indisciplined (Beckham v Argentina) , too injury prone, and not good enough.
England have never beaten a 'top side' in a knock out round since.....well the golden generation never did

I would suggest that the Lottery that is a Penalty Shootout cannot be held against anyone

Was it not a Golden Goal when Sol Campbell scored against Argentina that somehow was not given?

Then we have Frank Lampards that in fairness was only about a foot over the line !

3-2 Against both Portugal and Croatia yes didn't win but fine margins and then we have that Gazze moment against Germany

Sol Campbell’s disallowed goal and Beckham’s sending off were in WC 1998 under Glenn Hoddle. He was tactically much much better than the managers that followed him, but struggled to cope with players like Paul Gascoigne.
We didn’t have a world class side at the time, but probably could’ve squeezed passed Argentina with Gazza in the side.

Very fair points. We had little luck.
But the golden generation ultimately didn't deliver.
The previous generation with Gascoigne / Lineker did a lot better.
And this generation with some fantastic young players coming through will hopefully do better still.

Haha your not being serious are you
Beckham was never world class he had a very good right foot oh and an image that would make a club millions in shirt sales but he was never world class
You’re taking the p i s s, right? He was runner-up in the Ballon d'Or in 1999, twice runner-up for FIFA World Player of the Year and in 2004 was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players. World class. Fact.

Capello had an unbelievable record? Really? In qualifying maybe, but at tournaments, where it really counted he was beyond woeful.

Ha ha, I’d forgotten about all these games. A catalogue of disasters and heroic failures. I’m not really interested in England but will no doubt get drawn in by the Euros.

The "Golden Generation" were a group of world class players, but an utterly crap team. There was an interview a few years ago with, I think, Rio Ferdinand where he said that players from different clubs basically didn't talk to each other because they were rivals before team mates. Maybe someone will remember and can post it, I remember it being a good interview.

I don't like Southgate as a manager, but it has to be said the one thing he's done well is create a good team atmosphere. If we'd have had that in the 00's we might have actually won something.

Back on the topic of Rob Dickie - I think we all knew he was destined for the Prem, but I'm surprised he's making the step up so quick. Impressive from him to hit the ground running so well at QPR. Keep improving at this rate and I don't think it's completely out of the question that he could flirt with the England squad. Look at Ben White - Championship defender in 2019/20, one season in the Prem, makes the preliminary Euros squad. I just hope wherever he goes he gets to show what he can do in a half decent side.

This.

To argue the players individually were "not good enough" is insanity.

It depends on your definition of ‘world class’, a term which doesn’t really mean anything. He was definitely one of the best players in the world at one point

The golden generation were ridiculously unlucky. Shearer did foul the keeper tbh for the Argentina goal, but the Portugal one a few years later was absolutely laughable, as was the Lampard goal against Germany.

We shot ourselves in the foot so badly at the same time though, sticking Scholes out on the left, the Gerrard/Lampard debate as if only 442 could ever work, taking years to introduce people who actually balanced the team like Barry and Hargreaves.

I like Southgate because he seems to understand our limitations and work with them. He realises that we’re not that strong at centre back so plays 3 or Trippier over TAA. And I like this team, because they seem to care about playing for England in a way the golden generation didn’t tbh. I think that’s massively down to the positive relationship between the media and the squad that Southgate seems to have developed. This is probably a tournament too early looking at the age of the squad, but I feel better about England now than I have done for years.

I'm still pissed off about the Portugal and Germany disallowed goals. Two really dreadful decisions on the biggest stage.

Funnily enough I think there's a lot of comparisons to be made with Southgate to our own KR. Both have created a really positive feeling in the respective camps, both have good relationships with the media, both have got the players playing for the badge and both I think have question marks over their heads whether their managerial abilities are enough to bring success despite coming close to success in the past.

I think that is absolutely spot on, although I’d love to hear Karl’s thoughts on having 6 full backs in a squad.
