Ex Player #11 Joey Beauchamp RIP

I'm lucky to have it.

I'm also forever thankful that my wife put up zero opposition to naming our son after him.

That’s even better. Joey is a brilliant name in any case but even more so given his namesake. Must have added to the pain even more for you so sorry for that. But in another way, his legacy will live on with your lad.

Just a mention for Peter Rhodes Brown, the face of OUFC pitchside, its very much appreciated what you do for the community and OUFC. I expected the Cambridge build up will be very difficult for you and those long serving members of the team given the circumstances …… just thank you 💛💙 semper fidelis

Joey destroying West Brom

Lovely to hear the Joey song being sung full throttle. Great finish.

Great to see the London Road end and the crowd surges….my daughter was fascinated by that and some of the chants

A reminder of how brave the players used to be and how much more physical the game used to be. The places they put their heads and the number of slides that would cause a ruck these days

And a crazy Matt Murphy run. Half brilliant half bizarro legs

Well said.

And ahead of today’s game and all of the emotions it will bring, can I say thank you to fellow fans this week.

It has been a tough, strange week but the community of the club has shone through.

It’s been a tough year generally but hearing others talk about their experiences - about Joey, but life more generally too - has been a real support. I’m sure it has helped others too.

Thank you.

Managed to find a photo of me with Joey after he gave out the awards at a football programme I was in during the early nineties.

Was a hero then and remains one to me today.

Rest easy Joey.

You went with the straight up full on Gary Lineker look.

Joey looks like he vomited his salary in Topman.

Funny you should say that.

We couldn’t afford replica kids when I was a kid so my mum got me an old England kit from a jumble sale.

First time I wore it (around 1993), I got some grief from some of the kids for it being an ‘old’ kit and one boy said something like “who do you want to be, old man Lineker?!”

Thanks to Joey (and a joint birthday and Christmas present), I’d be inspired to be in an Oxford shirt within a year of this photo!

Hehe, yes. I use to tease him. He bought a "Don Johnson" suit, have a white ski jacket which he bought in the Westgate which was too small, just because it was a brand name. And if you ask any of the ex players, it was his love for Five Star and the t shirt he wore to training.

My dad passed away aged 81 in November, he was a season ticket holder for many years.
Joey was one of his favourites.
I've been over to see my mum today and she was sorting through some of his things.
We found a pile of old match day programs from the 90s and 00s.
Top of the pile was this one featuring Joey from November 96.
Happy days!

Nice - was a fan of those 96/97 programmes and their punny headlines on the cover!

Funny that the programme has a stadium update too. Presumably it says “we’re building it, and can’t see any reason why it wouldn’t ever be finished”!!

Hope you’re doing OK after losing your Dad.

I'm not sure whether this adds any more to what we already know - or need to know. I feel for Luke for having to be the one to identify him. Very sad.

One small item did strike me was from the Ox Files club podcast where Joey talked through a late 90s season. It was released roughly a year ago too. He mentioned being 'bored' due to lockdown and was furloughed at the time. We know that many suffered with their mental health when the pandemic was at its worst. It may have added another layer to what he was going through.

The pandemic has a lot to answer for, furlough put many people through difficulties, yes it was ok being paid some money but doing nothing must have been hell, being retired I didn’t experience this.

What I do know is that it affected people in different ways, so if anybody feels stressed, depressed or in any way “weird” then talking to someone is the best way, mates or strangers, everybody will listen, I listen, people have listened to me, sharing an issue is the best way, as Mick Dundee in Crocodile Dundee said ”if you have a problem then you tell donk, he tells everybody in the pub then you don’t have a problem” so sharing is the best way.

I am no expert, but will listen to anybody and hopefully point them in the right direction.
