They’re a curious bunch, the hardcourt season Yanks. During rain delays, they towel down the entire court rather than cover it like they do at Wimbledon. Weird.

Regardless of what Emma Raducanu does here, she’s a history maker. Not just for British tennis but for coming through three matches in qualifying where she was only seeded 31 and in her second ever main draw slam. Women’s tennis is in need of a new superstar with Williams’s reign nearing an end and she - possibly along with Fernandez - could fill that void.

Notwithstanding the evident nerves and the occasional double fault, this is a high class match.

Hard hitting, aggressive volleys, finding the baseline. Really good advert for the game from two people who were born in 2002!
