Away Match Day Thread +++ 11/8/2021 Burton Albion v OUFC Carabao Cup +++

Well spotted. Wanna bet it's not though?
And you weren’t wrong. Was at the game and was surprised that Aygei / Bodin weren’t swopped round for at least some of the game. They did ok but much of our play down the right, Holland hardly got a touch before he scored!

How did McNally play?
A pretty solid 7/10 from me, looked confident for a debutant, strong in the air and passed the ball around better than most. A good prospect and being very mobile might have the ability to development the surging run forward game a la Dickie / Atkinson? Playing behind Gorrin / Sykes he had to be on his toes as a lot of our clearances and passes didn’t get out of our half.

The goal last night all came from Johnson getting the ball and not being afraid to spread the play and release Forde. Many 16 year olds would’ve gone for the easy option of a 5 yard pass.
What position was he playing ?

All things considered that was a really good result. Plus a good run out for the some of the fringe players, some of whom will have given KR a boost in terms of cover.

Sounds like Karl played a blinder then, leaving our six best players at home. Who was better, Winnall or Agyei?
Both were ineffectual in the first half. Winnall was awful. In the second half when Winnal went off and Agyei moved to the middle, Dan and the team were instantly more effective.

Dan's movement and strength caused the Burton defence lots of problems. In the first half he didn't get enough of the ball. Winnall should of had a clear run on goal but instead of letting the ball run pass him to run onto it flicked off his heel resulting in nowt.

So who was good, who was bad?
Eastwood 7 - Looked a bit stale, didn't really have to make too many saves, the usual worldy not required. Some of his handling and kicking was poor but made up for it with the penalties.
Chambers-Parillon 6 - Did really well considering hes not a fullback, looks composed on the ball but made a couple of sloppy passes which could of ended in a goal. He looks like he could be a really good player.
Thorniley 8 - Defended brilliantly, composed on the ball and his passes were pretty good. His experience showed when martialled the inexperienced players around him.
McNally 7.5 - Defended well, looked very good in the first half but seemed to lose concentration more as the game went on. I was glad to see him in ahead of Mous' and overall was pretty impressive.
Forde 6 - Did OK, and seemed much better going forward from rightback in this game. But IMO it was his poor throw-ins deep in injury time which gave the ball back to Burton when we should of held onto the ball.
Gorrin 7 - Good to see him back breaking up the play, he doesn't have Cam's range of passing and you could see he wasn't anywhere near fit but still got stuck in well.
McGuane 8 - Best player on the pitch by a mile in the first half, oozed class, he seemed to glide pass players with ease. Faded very quickly after the break which is why Burton pretty much battered us for the 2nd half of the game.
Sykes 7.5 - As energetic as ever, no errors just general good all round play. He seemed to be on the end of a lot of Burton rough stuff! Played an excellent ball for either Agyei or thankfully for Holland to tap in.
Agyei 6.5 - Game of two halfs for Dan first half I'd have given him a 4/10, never really settled on the ball. In the 2nd half when moved centrally he was like a different player and bullied the Burton defence (who were really solid BTW). 8/10 in the 2nd half.
Winnall 4 - Poor all game didn't hold the ball up, lost it in a really promising position. (BTW I have always been supportive of him and do hope he will bang a few in as an impact sub, but he should not start ahead of Agyei as the lone striker IMO)
Bodin 7 - Didn't get too much of the ball in the first half and come to life more in the second. He has a lovely touch, and some of his flick ons were sublime. Did make a couple sloppy passes but will get better with more games I reckon.

Pro's - Game time for the fringe players, McNally and the other youngsters impressed. McGaune when fully fit will be a super star for us.
Cons - Winnall was dire. I don't think Forde is good enough to be backup for a sustained period, hopefully he will prove me wrong and improve as Ruffels did (but I was never a fan of his either, sorry).

In conclusion, IMO we need specialist back up in both fullback positions and for Gorrin. Winnall should only be really used in Jamie Mackieusque cameo with 10 mins to go, when holding on.

Edit: Just to add Burton looked class and should of probably hammered us, which is why I've scored pretty high for most as this was a really tough game and they held on well for most of the game. The ref was a whistle happy poser (loved to gesticulate as the slightest decision).

Some player ratings from someone who was there would be good.
Well I would say for 89 mins Sykes was awful a 3
But then he cleared a certain goal off the line
Had the assist for goal
Scores a pen
So shows you how much I know lol

They seem to think if Hemmings had been playing we would have lost 3/4-1
