Sadly Long isn’t the same player since his injuries. He has list pace so he’s not able to go past a player and is beaten in a chase defensively. He’s possibly playing within himself due to the fear of his hamstring going again, or he’s got permanent damage. Whatever he’s not the player of a couple of years ago.
He’s definitely not good enough, for a team aspiring to reach the championship. I understand scotch egg has a bit of a love in for him, because of his special relationship with Beryl, but anyone with half a brain can see he’s not good enough, and sooner or later we will have to cut our ties with these average players.

Seddon got 6? By contrast, long got 1. Cadden got 14 for forest green last season? Kane Wilson got about the same?

For Wigan last season.

Max power 12
James Mclean 7.

For Wednesday

Marvin Johnson 8.

All the teams that we were in and around last season.

Max Power got 5 assists whilst playing right back. James McClean, 2 assists from left back. Marvin Johnson, 2 assists whilst playing full back or part of a back 3.

Have to agree. Would happily take him as backup but he’s not a player who would be good enough for the championship & even if we managed to get promoted with him in the side, he would need to be replaced. Which we should be looking to do now. We should be aiming to buy players who can make the step up.

might want to look up where you got your info because it’s wrong. McLeans winner at the kassam came from him playing left wing back. Don’t think you’d see Long finishing a chance like that. He ain’t good enough and that’s the pure and simple truth and because he’s a local lad too many people don’t want to hear it. He’s back up. He shouldn’t be first choice.

Keep seeing this on here and i'm still waiting to read evidence of which wingers/wingbacks have had him for toast because i cannot think of one.

With regards possibly playing within himself, again i point to him sprinting from the bye line caught the attacker by 1/2 way and made a superb tackle, all this from around 15 yards behind

The worst Seddon moment from Saturday, for me, was the Eastwood save - it's at about 1:05 on the short version of the highlights:

Findlay has pushed up on the forward into the centre circle, and fouled his man.
Seddon has to know that a) Findlay is out of the play, and b) Mendez-Laing is about 20% quicker than he is. So he simply has to drop five yards off him to protect his own goal. Instead, he idly stands there next to his man, watching the ball - and when Derby take it quickly, it's the simplest ball in the world for them to release Mendez-Laing on goal. This was a period of the game when we were on top, but Easty needed to bail Seddon out otherwise it would have been an absurdly simple goal to concede.
I don't know if it's just a lack of concentration, or a more fundamental lack of understanding of positioning and space on a football field - but either way, it seems to happen all the time when Seddon plays LB.

I don't think Ciaron Brown makes the same mistake......but as has been pointed out elsewhere on this thread, Brown doesn't offer you a whole lot in an attacking sense.

I don't know how anyone could look at our squad, remember last season and then watch the game on Saturday, and not think that LB is one of the key positions where we need an upgrade. But KR seemed to say otherwise. At this point, I'm just praying that it's him spouting randomly at a press conference (as he is wont to do) rather than what he actually thinks.......

This. ^^^

Let’s be honest, the fans have already lost faith in Seddon. And probably quite fairly. The problem for KR now is that there will be selective assessment of his performance. If he makes a mistake it’ll be extrapolated. When he does something good it’ll be overlooked. And there will also be fans who take justified criticism on an Internet forum, and turning it in to a toxic vibe on game day.

Transfermarkt for the stats.

And you might to consider the difference between opinion and pure and simple truth!!

He's also one of the quickest at the club so not sure why lack of pace is often used against him.

Not at all. He just isn’t good enough for what the club want to achieve to be first choice, Seddon also. So I’m not just picking on Sam Long. Some people need to stop being so sentimental & smell the coffee. We can stay in L1 for 2-3 more seasons as far as I’m concerned. Doesn’t matter to me what league we play in. I watch us because I enjoy it. However if we want to be promoted. You move out the dead wood and you replace it with quality & if what people are saying about our budget is true, then we can do better than seddon and long as first choice wingbacks and they should of been in before the end of the season and we should be playing 3-1-4-2 rather than 4-2-3-1 which isolates Taylor & makes us way too predictable.

Sam Long grabbed a bucket load of assists in the 20/21 season and put in at least twice as many crosses/balls across the box that were a toe away from more goals. Plenty of end product there.
What was his numbers last year and other seasons for comparison ?

if i don't agree with you but respect your opinion why am i being sentimental?

Considering Plymouth have just had US investors come on board - acquiring 20% for 4m…maybe Plymouth don’t have a huge need for funds? They are a smart run club on the up. Hardie would be a great addition - both him and Szmodics high pressing forwards of a good age, so something to go on with requirements for a striker. Just don’t fall into the Jephcott trap!

Is Steve Seddon a specialist Left Back though? I'm not making a snide remark about the use of the term 'specialist' - it's a genuine question.

He's only 24, has had multiple loans at three clubs in L1/L2, a handful of appearances for Brum in The Championship and a season with us (his only full season of professional football with one club).

His suitability as a Left Back for us is questionable to say the least, and I believe he was deployed as a Wing-Back during his various spells at Wimbledon.
May well have been an out-and-out LB for the others, but only for half seasons at most and the only side that was any decent was the Pompey team we beat in the play-offs in 19/20. Even then, they seemed to play some sort of 4-2-3-1 as per the Kenny Jackett way - so did he get more protection? One of those '2' was typically Tom Naylor - if we had that calibre of player at CDM maybe that formation would work for us too?

The long and the short of it is that he's still relatively young, having only had one full season with one club (us) and has been used in a variety of formations, sometimes clearly not as a Left Back (and in others only when afforded the protection of 2x Holding/Defensive Midfielders).

Perhaps he isn't a Left Back after all?
Remember Clare ?

Played at right back by KR when it wasn’t his natural position
Funnily enough when he was pushed forward he did a lot better for us
I think the same about Seddon in a LWB position but he would need a run of games at it
