International News Covid-19 .....

No great surprise.

Not really sure what the point of viewing COVID deaths in isolation is though.

No point at all when a lot of the population has underlying health issues.

If there is a "point" it would be that if you are "fit & healthy with no health issues" these are your odds of dying.

My immediate thoughts are I’m shocked there are that many deaths in people who have no underlying conditions. That death rate must eclipse colds, flu etc by some distance, but that wouldn’t be a big surprise given covid is essentially a combination of SARS and the common cold and would back up the global concern about it.

Also that as millions of people nationally in the uk never mind globally have underlying conditions and how incredibly broad the definition is (it includes mental health conditions for example) it is either a really worrying or a completely meaningless statistic.

What are your thoughts junior - you’ve felt compelled to post this up asking for a response which would suggest you think this tweet proves something significant but also you don’t have the confidence in it to stand by it yourself?

The main issue is not the number of deaths (although that is major problem too), but it is to do with the number of people ending up in hospital, taking up hospital beds and leaving ambulances with patients on board waiting in the car park because the hospital is full. Not to mention all the cancelled operations and appointments, which will need to rescheduled.

Whether you have an underlying health condition or not - it still takes up a bed in a hospital and places a burden on the NHS, so if Mr Kimble/Mr Wooten are suggesting the pandemic response has been over-zealous, then they are speaking out of their khyber!

Does anyone know if reinfections are included in England's 'new infections' figures yet?

Don’t know the answer to your question.
Maybe if they are/were, the conflicting information you’ve highlighted would be clearer.
Article one quotes the reinfection rate as 1 in 7.
Article 2 quotes it as being 2 in every 3.

AFAIK they are not seperated as reinfections.

A positive test, confirmed by PCR, is a "new case" irrespective of previous history.

You would probably find more realistic infection data from the ONS infection survey.
Yes - I`m on it, get quizzed and swabbed every fortnight.

Any thoughts on here about artists such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell asking Spotify to take down their music because of Covid 'misinformation' being spread on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast?

I assume they don't have an issue with Apple operating sweatshops and Amazon mistreating its staff?

I haven't listened to the podcast (I have listened to some JRE episodes - there's one with a sleep specialist which is particularly interesting), but from reading a bit about the subject, I understand most of the claims of misinformation relate to a podcast with a virologist who contributed to the development of mRNA vaccines, so an 'expert' on the subject of ever there was one. Have any of his claims actually been proven incorrect? I would genuinely be interested to know more.

As I say, I haven't listened to the podcast, but in general I do find it strange how some seem so intent on shutting down any conversation about the vaccines. Surely it's healthy and useful for people to raise legitimate concerns and questions? Having an adult conversation about them is surely going to be more effective at convincing vaccine doubters or even anti-vaxxers that they should be getting the vaccine? After all, was it not big pharma that essentially started the opioid epidemic in the US? It surprises me that some people are surprised there's some sections of society (especially in the US) that are distrustful of the big pharma companies and the govt.

The trend towards wanting to shut down debate and those with opposing viewpoints is, IMO, dangerous and counterproductive. There is a reason podcasts like the Joe Rogan experience do so well - maybe those who disagree with his views or don't like his guests should strive to put forward their own views and interview different guests so that people can listen to both and make up their own minds?

After saying all that, I'm not really sure Spotify is going to be too sad about having to take down Neil Young and Joni Mitchell's music anyway!

I saw Dominic Raab's pants were on fire this morning when he said that the UK has the fastest booster rollout in Europe.

Not so Dommy boy....and hasn't been the case since last May. We're now 4th.

Not that I ever want to back the government on anything whatsoever, but doesn't your graph show combined vaccinations per 100 people, not just booster vaccinations? Couldn't he actually be correct in what he's saying about the booster rollout? I'm sure there are stats out there to prove that it was a lie, but I don't think this is it.

Christ I feel dirty now, going for a long shower.

I suspect in pure numbers he could claim it's the fastest i.e. we did the most overall in X months - not hard to achieve given we have one of the largest and most concentrated populations in Europe.

I'll join you in the cleansing shower @SteMerritt , I think @RyanioBirdio is waiting for us and has bent over to pick up the soap.

Sorry wrong graph (but have a wash anyway :ROFLMAO: )

This shows booster rollout - same story really, just a later tail off.

Population of Malta is around 443k
Population of Denmark 5.84m
Population of Italy 59m
All three combined just hits the UK population total.
Factor in some vaccine reluctance, more prevalent in the UK, and there we are.

Unless you want to start forcing people to have it?? 🤷‍♀️

Aside from "numbers" this gives better data as to the state of play across the EU/EEA, where the uptake range by country is between 34.2–94.5%.
