So it is Stokes.
I think it's a mistake.
1. He's got to stay fit which has always been a problem.
2. He's had mental health issues recently and if things don't go well who knows what will happen!!
3. He's the pivotal player in the team already and has enough on his plate. Look what happened to Botham and Flintoff.
I'll be as pleased as punch if it all works out but it just seems too risky to me.

I am not sure that there was an alternative.
We have no idea where he is on the mental health side of things, and presumably the medical staff and he believe that he will be able to take on this challenge .
I would prefer it not to be Stokes, but based on the options available, think it had to be him

What is it with English cricket’s obsession with making your best batsman the captain? It always seems to affect their batting and it doesn’t always translate into being a good captain either.

Many have said that Stokes is a leader who is good tactically. And there isn't an obvious alternative?

It's the right (only?) choice if he can cope with the extra pressure mentally. But that's a big question, given that he couldn't cope with the pressure of just being England's best player last year.

I hope they've talked to a bunch of mental health specialists before making this call.

I would bet a lot that they have.
Not sure that he couldn't cope with being Engkand best player. He had a court case, his father was very ill and who knows what else he had in his life.
We don't know the full facts so I am a little surprised that people are suggesting that he shouldn't be captain due to some mental health problems he has that we almost certainly don't know the full extent of

I certainly have no inside knowledge.

I just hope that the England team are doing what's right for Ben Stokes, not just what's right for England.

Too often in the past, sports in general have chewed up and spat out players without any real thought as to whether they can cope with the pressure and the stress.

Given his past record, we have more reason to worry about Ben Stokes in that regard than most.

Stokes 161 off 88 balls for Durham (17 sixes!)
And then 8 overs for 8 runs

Brendan McCullam set to be named as the new England test coach. Currently coaching in the IPL. Bit of a surprise!!

Yes maybe.
But a fantastic captain and pretty innovative/ positive/ aggressive
A bit different from the timid team we had become under Root

Confirmed.
McCullum new red ball head coach on a four year contract!!
New white ball coach in due course.

Seems a bit weird that you would hire one of the most dangerous and innovative white ball cricketers of his generation, and not have him coach the One Day/t20 side.

But I guess playing and coaching are not the same thing!

Yes. The initial approach was for the white ball job. That to date is the only coaching experience he has, in India and the West Indies. He is also a good friend of Eoin Morgan!! A bit strange as you say but let's hope they know what they are doing!!

Four year deal! That is a statement of intent and Rob Key is clearly putting his full faith in him.

Yes, the white ball job seemed the more obvious fit, but for McCullum I can see why he would want the challenge of turning round the fortunes of England's worst test team in 30 years - the challenges don't get much bigger or more exciting for a coach than that! He's definitely much more of a character than any of our recent coaches, and that bodes well in terms of someone that is going to come in and change things from the ground up because let's face it, that is what is going to be required.

Sadly, the Test team will only really improve if the ECB give more priority to the County Championship.

It seems they are trying to reduce the stress on coaches as well as players.

Fabulous limited overs cricketer as he was, he was also the captain that set the current NZ Test team on it's inexorable rise., something that didn't happen immediately but over a number of years - hence the long term contract I guess.

It's not a bowling attack to set the heart racing is it? No outright pace and a spinner with obvious limitations.

Obviously there are problems to resolve with Robinson - 42 wickets in 9 matches is a good start to a test career but his fitness is questionable.

Pretty surprised Parkinson isn't in the squad
Woakes is injured again as well!!
Hard to see when Parkinson will ever be picked if not now. I think Leach is fairly average tbh.
Glad Foakes has kept his place. Without doubt the best gloveman we have. He's averaging in the 90s at the moment as well. Was a bit worried Jennings might have got a recall. Crawley is averaging 19 from 8 innings this season. I'm not sure about him, he's got a very suspect defence and looks like he could be out anytime he doesn't hit the ball to the fence. Rob Key loves him so I guess that helped in his selection. Pope needs a score as well. I would like to see Brook given a go at 5 over Bairstow.
