Home Match Day Thread +++ 16/03/2019 OUFC v Bradford City match day thread +++

Can count on one finger the times I've lost my s**t like that when we've scored in last minute at home...embarrassed myself and everyone around me...great night though,!

I think the issue is that Ruffels was in the box when the goal kick was taken.

Who cares, the ref gave the goal...eventually.

Nope our players can be in the box but can not touch the ball, in fact even opposing players can, they just can’t touch the ball.
Stupid thing is if they left the box and then ran back in the kick would need to be retaken.

As KR said in his second interview. It’s all about their players being in the box when the kick is taken. But as they don’t touch the ball and are not effecting play they are inactive. Therefore no problem, goal stands :)

Claudio Ranieri top left. Manager in waiting.

This is when the officials should be allowed to explain their decisions after the match, rather than locking themselves away. Nobody other than them still knows what caused the ref to change his mind twice.
From highlights, unofficial videos and photos, my take on it is this:
1. Neither the ref nor linesman thought it was a corner or a penalty, else the linesman would have pointed to the corner flag or held his flag across his chest.
2. The goal kick was taken from inside the 6 yard box, and the ball was not moving, so no problem there.
3. There were players in the box when the goal kick was taken. While opposition players should not be in the box, a retake should only happen if they interfere with the goal kick. This didn't happen so no issues here.
4. The ball was a couple of inches inside the area when Ruffels first touched it. This should have resulted in a retake. However, at full speed, that would have been very difficult to spot, especially from the linesman's point of view. And, that split second was hardly likely to affect what subsequently happened.

From that, I can only conclude that the linesman was worried about the number of players in the box, and that the ref then spent a few minutes clarifying the rule with his assistants, to eventually give the correct decision on that particular point.

I was watching him receive the ball from the goal kick. All the time saying to myself as the ball rolled towards him... don’t touch it yet, don’t touch it yet... it looked to me definitely outside the area on his first touch. Sky highlights miss it though.

Thought 1-1 Lucky, but 1-0 Lucky all the sweeter :) A lot of dross in bottom half - can't see most of them winning another game tbh - could Blackpool be drawn in with points deductions - if we get 7 points from next 3 we will bizarrely be top half. Oh the fun. Great result though brightened up Saturday for a change. COYY

Next Saturday’s fixtures - many HUGE games:

Coventry v Oxford

Wimbledon v Gillingham
Plymouth v Bristol R
Bradford v Blackpool
Rochdale v Scunthorpe

Peterborough v Southend
Walsall v Barnsley
Shrewsbury v Portsmouth
Burton v Accrington

Massive win yesterday, quick thinking by Simon Eastwood and Josh Ruffels and a fantastic strike from Jamie Mackie gave us the win we thoroughly deserved. Really looking forward to another massive game at Coventry next week, get a win there and the table will be starting to look a bit better.

Seems highly plausible, I hope the officials get to read this before writing their report. It would clear up any confusion for all concerned.

It was excellent to get the three points. Bradford were truly awful - the worst side I have seen this season - and are very likely to be in L2 next season. Our shooting is laughable. Never mind actually scoring, getting a few more on target would be progress! Kashi was pretty good, I still think Sinclair has the makings of a good player (although not necessarily a lone central striker) and why was Sam Long MOM? - that seemed fairly random! The whys and wherefores of the goal have been discussed elsewhere, but the better team won.

i would imagine had that happened to us it would have been our managers fault for not having his players focused and dealing with the following attack.

as for this VAR shi*e had it of been in operation either outcome would have been possible

i mentioned the other day either have it in all grounds or not at all, yesterdays cup matches prove that to be the case and listening to sunday supplement and one guy saying it doesn't matter that it wasn't used at Swansea clearly highlights the problem.

I don't think VAR will ever come into operation at L1 level.

It requires a team of operators relying on multiple camera views. The one camera recording the action didn't even follow the ball to see the 'incident'!

“ We’ve got a pen. We’ve got a pen ! “
This also clears up complaint #15 I’ve heard from the Bradford side that Sinclair handballed it from Whyte’s shot for the goal. Clearly gets blocked by the defender.
The ref, far side linesman, and Bradford (for failing to restart the match) should get punished for what happened after the goal, complete farce which should never be ruining a finale such as this.

“ We’ve got a pen. We’ve got a pen ! “

Optimistic half time score prediction by one of his mates with 3-1, considering they hadn't hit a shot on target!

Also telling that none of those supporters even considered it a penalty and that their player had missed.

And that coverage puts another nail in Bowyer's rant yesterday when he said our goal came from a lucky block from our player when the initial shot was actually blocked by their defender.

Edit: Fair play to the kid, he did say the goal was deserved after we scored.

We totally deserved to win. A draw would have been gutting but a loss would have been a travesty.

Ainsworth : “ I did not see that coming...” He then really bigs up the Oxford v Wycombe clash (it’s their next match)
on March 30th.

Not a surprise that he still using the poverty line when talking about squad strengthening but he really needs to get a new excuse.

Also, is it only Wycombe who use the M40 derby or has our club sulleyed itself using the term for something that is just a normal game that happens to be relatively close?

That ref normally takes Championship games so should have been an upgrade on the part time rubbish we normally get but he managed to show they are all useless. Get home watch Man C v Swansea and they are just as bad.

It's only the 'M40 derby' in the sense you could describe Newcastle v Barnet as the 'A1 derby'. Even if you used a very loose definition of 'derby'*, it would be geographically correct but otherwise meaningless.

* Surely a derby is not just about proximity. There has to be some deeply felt rivalry as well. Oxford v Swindon is a derby, Oxford v Wycombe isn't.

If Blackpool get a maximum 12 PTS deduction then they would be below us as it stands. Based on precedent and the rules they should get the full deduction but I reckon the FL will find an excuse not to.
