EPL Chris Wilder to leave Sheff Utd!

There was clearly a relationship breakdown with the chairman.

It is all very well saying his employer deserved some respect. Maybe he wasn’t getting any respect or support in return.

He went to Northampton, obviously got support and respect and in return turned the team on its head.
Sorry I don't agree. He had the fans support right until the end. He turned on us when things were stagnating. He passed the buck.

Let's have some respect here.
1500 of us turned up at Salisbury on that bitter day in December 2008 to see the squad that CW inherited get well beaten by one of the worst teams that we have ever played in the league. Joe Burnell at RB, Matt Day at LB, Luke Foster having a strop, teenagers Alex Fisher and James Clarke as the subs. Even though there were a couple of decent players (Beano, Adam Murray, Yemi) their morale was so low. If you had told us after that game that Wilder could get us back in to the league rather than take us down to Conference South, where we were undoubtedly heading, then no-one would have believed you. And he did it without spending any money.

Maybe my memory is clouded but my recollection is one of fans losing patience, lots of grumbling undercurrent and many calling for his head long before he left.

You said it yourself, the football had become stale and it was boring. Only need to look at the meltdown on this forum after a half decent game sometimes to realise fans are fickle and very difficult to please.

As I say, my memory may be clouded but I would question Wilder having the support of fans right up until the end.

But we all have different views and memories I guess.

Respect is indeed a two way street.

He deserves to be lauded for getting us out of the conference. That is in no doubt.

My issue is regarding his departing from OUFC. Come the end when his team was stagnating, he turned on the fans. He then quickly left us for a struggling Northampton without a single bit of respect. Just like that. After five and a bit years. Quite frankly I'll put it out there - we helped him become the man he is today.

Much rather have a decent man like Karl Robinson in charge.

As mentioned above, I think there was needle each way with the fans.

But absolutely agree re: Karl Robinson.

There are aspects in all managers some fans don’t like, Wilder’s chippy interviews and his frank talking, Appleton’s lack of passion on the side lines, Robinson’s mouth running away with him every transfer window.
All 3 have been a massive part of where we are today though and Wilder started that off. Yes it was going stale but that was in part due to the lack of investment from Leneghan, we now know he was trying to get out himself at the time.
He gets my respect for being the one who got us back into the football league. I thought the way he left wasn’t right and left a bad taste in the mouth. Since then though he has said openly just the other year when he came back that one of his biggest regrets is how he left the football club. I believe him when he says that too as he is a loyal person.

I think my issue is some people seem to think he is deserving of our respect! I cannot believe 7 years on some of our fans seem to forget how he left us.

There are stories about him at Northampton where he stripped the then captain of the armband because he didn't want to go out on a team pissup which wilder called "teambuilding" The bloke is a massive knob.

He deserves everything he gets after spending 60 million on crap at Sheffield united last summer.

f**k the bloke.

I think there’s a lot of projection with football people, we build them up into good or bad whereas really I suspect a lot of them are Tory shits who drone on about cars and would be a bit creepy with your girlfriend. Best stick to the playing stuff and not speculate too much about their character.

Wow Bob! The man who took our club by the scruff of the neck and made it a club with hope again. Gave us probably the best day many of us modern fans will have. Gave us a team who would die for the cause. Who came back, free of charge as a premiership manager to celebrate our promotion year 10 years on.

Us and Wilder was a mutually beneficial relationship which ended sourly. But the guy is an incredible football manager.

Jesus take your tongue out of his a**e.

The bloke left us with no respect, gaslighted the fans in the final season when the wheels were falling off. The rhetoric when be was Northampton manager. f**k him.

Was always very good to me. Got on fine with him and I saw firsthand what he was dealing with and the conditions he was working under day after day. That I was compiling the scout reports and preparing the tactics sheets for every pre-match is a good indicator of where the club was at in terms of resources. We were also training at a cricket pavilion and didn’t even have access to a rehab space for injured players bar the faculties at the golf club at Chesterton. There was a treatment table at the pavilion and a couple more at the stadium with almost no medical equipment - that was it. Anything outside of a rub down was limited to whatever the golf club had, and if we couldn’t use their space it was tough luck. That does come into play somewhat when people say he had it all. Agree that he made hard work of promotion (many of the players from the time will tell you that too) but we got there. It was done the hard way but it was done. 18 months before Wembley we were genuinely in danger of being dragged into a relegation fight that could easily have seen us in the Conference South. The turnaround was rapid as well as sizeable. I don’t think that can just be spat on, personally.

That said he didn’t leave well to put it kindly, and I know how he could be. Especially after a couple of pints (and the rest...) or when he was simply feeling difficult. I can completely understand why people wouldn’t think too highly of him. As I’ve said previously, everybody’s experiences and encounters with people are different and as a result none of them are ‘wrong’. One person’s best mate is another person’s prized helmet. That’s just how it is, no matter how difficult that can be for some to accept.

Wouldn’t mind a slice of his payoff pie from the sounds of it. Not bad work (or lack of) if you can get it.

What about Alan Knill?

Challenging you say? If that was Karl Robinson you would call him a w****r!
Was Alan Knill here? Wilder, Mickey and Melville were a brilliant combo.

If Robbo has half the success of Wilder here he"ll have done a good job. And Robbo certainly isnt immune from wiggling his a**e in front of other clubs to get a better deal. See Blackpool.

Easy to forget the days of losing to Histon and Tonbridge Angels before Wilder got us a grip.

You appear to view the Wilder years with rose tinted glasses. He surrendered top place to stevenage and indeed second place to Luton. He nearly fucked it up!

You got any evidence about Robinson and Blackpool by the way? Or is that your own conjecture?

Getting back to the Sheffield United situation, the timing is weird. But I have two separate sources in Sheffield, and both told me on Wednesday that there had been words with the board which hadn't gone down well. No more detail apart from that, I'm afraid.

Are you a little bit obsessed Bob ? Posting after nearly every league defeat this season under the guise of it being relevant as an ex Oxford United connection.

There is no doubt Karl comes over as a more sympathetic and engaging character than Wilder did and the football is much more entertaining. However that win at wembley trumps all the negatives and ignited his career. Interesting to see what he does next.
