I’m sorry but if you think this standard of talent deserves this standard of management, you’re off your head! He is absolutely clueless. Yet another boring display of negative, scared to death, anti-football. He needs to go before the World Cup, before this generation of talent is wasted at the hands of a bloke that couldn’t manager a solid s**t, let alone an England team.
Talent? Random blokes from Villa and West Ham? It’s not an outstanding squad

Normally, as expected, we get through the group then fail later on when we play a better side . I really hope this tournament is different but if we do bail out I hope we have something to remember it by.

Such as?

I remember the Holland game in 96 very fondly.

What else is there?

Iceland?

The golden generation failing to get out of the group?

We mostly got to the quarter finals or 2nd round in most World Cups / Euros as my memory recalls .

Sorry but they're not that talented. They need a plan.

Euros, no. First time I saw us get out of the group stage was Euro 96, and I was 24 then!!!

...and I don't believe we've won a knockout game in normal time since 1960.

It was much tougher before to qualify as the finals were actually quality teams mostly .
But ...Euros 2004- quarter finals, 2012-quarter finals , 2016 last 16 .
World Cup 1998 last 16, 2002 quarter finals , 2006 quarter finals , 2010 last 16 2028 semi final.
Now its more sides involved we tend to get through the group then fail in the knockouts

State of this thread. The usual pissy England fans who think we’re entitled to win everything and push all and sundry aside 5-0 every game. It’s like they learn nothing from every tournament they watch.

I’m out. If you can’t be happy with going through when the Scots don’t, you’ll never be. If by some miracle England do win it, it’ll be bemoaned by many as too boring.

There’s no point in emotional investment in England. There’s too many negative manners dragging them down even when they win matches.

I don't think *anyone* on this thread thinks we are entitled to win anything. But as a spectacle, something to watch, entertainment, England's matches have unarguably been dull. Now if you are in the camp that *is* emotionally invested in England then maybe that is a price worth paying for progression in the tournament. But I can honestly say that the matches I have actually enjoyed watching in this tournament have featured other teams than England (and yes, I actually would like us to do well).

So while the end might justify the means, it doesn't make it very interesting - or (given the way we have played) give anyone much confidence that we will be good enough once we come up against one of the stronger teams. I hope I am wrong and we suddenly find two or three extra gears, turn on the style and show what a team with some decent players in it can actually do.

PS Not sure that Scotland going out fills me with anything other than a sense of deja vu!

6 shots on target over 3 games!
lowest scoring group winners in history!

Speak for yourself, this game coming off the back of two mega announcements from OUFC, I'm certainly not going to sleep tonight...
Two? I know the first one is the Oxford City game must have missed the 2nd one can you enlighten me please.

To be fair the last euros Portugal didn’t win a group game but they still went on to win it they wasn’t playing exciting football the main thing is finishing 1st out of the rest (wining the trophy) nobody remembers how excitingly you played

I mean, that's not entirely true. People still remember the Brazil '70 team. They still top every poll of the greatest ever.
The Dutch team of the late 70s are still remembered affectionately even though they won f**k all. Same with Hungary in the 50s (27 goals in five games in '54!!). Because they both played beautiful, expansive football.

People also remember that Greece won it, and were dull as anything in doing so.

After not seeing an England team in a major tournament final in my lifetime, I'll take dull as long as it's coupled with winning. And in that respect it's so far, so good.

But I can't agree that footballing history only remembers function over form. It remembers both!

So? Seven points, no goals conceded. We can all cherrypick the bits of evidence to support the argument.

Sit and moan all you like about going through. I’m satisfied they made it. Like I said, some England fans choose to find fault at every turn and some of them post on this thread.

Sorry mate, but they seem to perform pretty well at club level. Is that just by chance, or is it because they are managed by competent professionals that know how to get the best out of talented players? I don’t see Mount/James/Foden/Sancho/Kane/Shaw etc etc struggling to play well, when they’re playing at club level. Southgate is a fraud. The sooner he is gone, the better.

For me the main thing is we topped the group the tournament starts now whoever we get next we will be playing in our own back yard we shouldn’t fear anybody
Cmon England
Just have to improve first
