National News Gary Lineker intervenes

I disagree with his thoughts in the past too. Nobody who is paid by the BBC should be posting political opinions at all using their public profile full stop, not whilst the licence fee exists. No moralising about world cup hosts, or about taking the knee or Brexit. Do away with the licence fee tomorrow and give Clarkson and others cancelled for not being politically correct enough the same protection then that would be ideal for me.
But you’re effectively accusing Gary Lineker of not being politically correct, and want him cancelled?

Given the BBC's stance on political comments from Gary in the past, they really don't have any leg to stand on:

What changed is that the BBC now has several Tory affiliates in high ranking positions and this is a direct attack on the Government.

The Government are now using it as an opportunity to create division and make it an "us v them" scenario. It's been such a blatant gaslighting tactic since the Brexit referendum and yet people STILL refuse to see it.

WHY?

They are not making these comments on the BBC and nobody with an ounce of common sense (remember that?) thinks their views are the views of the BBC.
Even ex director of the BBC (mark Thompson) is saying it was a breach of the editorial guidelines. Sadly if people can't keep their mouth shut then they have to go from the BBC . I also hate them on current affairs programs having any opinion on anything like football or even things that are on the face of it one sided like the Ukraine war.

I also believe that the BBC misstepped over it's coverage of the world cup and it's sports team went deep into politics and they shouldn't have gone there at all. Also showing taking of the knee as a highlight of matches as part of the premier league season they did it for. It wasn't a highlight it was a political posture.

Basically the problem is too big scrap the licence fee then people can moralise as much as they want.

I also as an aside hate the argument of saying something looks like Nazism or anti semitism people have been using framing to push legitimately held views towards being labelled as both for a while with the aim of getting them cancelled. See how gender critical feminism is now linked to the 'far right' simply for wanting single sex provision provided. Likewise scanning for certain conditions pre birth disability rights campaigners have been trying to link to eugenics and the Nazis. Criticism of Israel is often accused of antisemitism in the way that criticising Russia is never linked in the same way. Likewise criticism of immigration is immediately labeled racist, IVF funding for lesbian's homophobic, and simply standing up for men's rights misogynistic. They again they to attach labels to it because they want to discredit and silence the argument. It's why I don't use names until others have cried a ism in an attempt to get the views cancelled.

Sorry, but you can't hide behind 'because the rules say it'. So, if it helps, why should the rules say it?

To be clear I think these rules should apply to news reporters and the likes of Laura Kuenssberg.

So again...

Linekar hasn't said Sue Ellen should be cancelled!!

This below isn't for you, it's for anyone on here who may be at risk of being swayed by your drivel.

Remember Linekar was specifically talking about language not actions.

Oof, using that tweet to further your point on a Yellowsforum Gary Lineker thread. Your disrespect is palpable! Be ashamed 😅

Being told to be ashamed of saying that history suggests the path that we are on has real similarities.
Not waking up to what is happening. Calling people who are looking to claim asylum illegal. That’s what’s shameful and if you agree with that then the shame is on you.

Your general point about how Linekar should not lose his job is perfectly valid and I agree with it.

However, the comparison with 1930s Germany is embarrassing. People pushing that narrative are degrading and belittling the human suffering of WWII, and damaging the causes they stand for.

It's actually sad in some ways but I suppose when a certain amount of time passes, the severity of the events of any war will be forgotten and the whole event will just be used as a tool, by tools to further their sad little arguments about a Match of the Day TV presenter.

Good point. If it were Laura Keunsberg who had said it, then I can see there that would be an issue, because she is a political correspondant who has her own show and grills various politicians every Sunday morning, and there is a danger of being accused of bias.

Gary Lineker on the other hand is just a football presenter. So itt is safe to say, that his opinion on the migrant crisis has absolutely no bearing on whether he believes Man City should play a flat back 4 or 3 centre-backs with 2 wing-backs.

Do you have an A level in 'avoiding addressing the point at hand by being pompous'?

I'd be interested to know whether the public even want MOTD in its classic form. I just watched the 20 minute show and that's something that would appeal to me...all the incidents and gives me an extra hour to do something more useful than listening to washed-up pros being paid millions a year to say "He's done really well there" when someone beats his man and puts in a cross.

I try to watch coverage with crowd noise only when possible, the only negative is not knowing player names. But then I don't really care about 99% of football played, so I can do without it.
