Manager/Coach Des Buckingham

What dissent and petulance are you talking about?

Do you mean the complaining to the ref about being hauled down right in front of him, when he was pretty much clean through, and no foul was given? If so, then it's standard player moans at ref as he doesn't get the decision stuff. It's no more or less than we see in every game. Was it a bookable offence? By the letter of the law yes, but most times you just get a talking to.

After that I didn't see Ruben do a single thing wrong, and that includes the ridiculous second yellow card. I've watched it over several times and it wasn't even a foul, never mind a yellow. It's a ridiculous decision by the referee. I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but I can understand some people thinking it was the referee "levelling up".

Ruben Rodrigues is a very talented player, who's has been getting better by the week. Let's not turn him into a scapegoat because we're angry at losing and need to lash out at someone. Dissent and petulance is a massive overstatement.
I agree with most of what you have written, especially the first booking being very weak, but the second incident was a booking offence in my eyes as he grabbed their man when he managed to get the wrong side of him/potentially player breaking away. The other thing is, when you’re on a yellow card you have to tread a bit lighter, especially with referees these days.

You could argue that the incident Rodrigues moaned about was similar to his second booking (if not worse) which would lend well to your levelling up remark.

However you put it it was 2 very light bookable offensives which could have been avoided, and a really shame as he’s not available for the Bolton game.

I suppose we are so used to the deadpan look but just think smiling assassin when we need the ruthless look.

It’s so painful.

He’s doing him no favours.
The club is in such a better state than it was back then. It should be a case of Des taking us to the next chapter not constantly going back to the past.

I never thought I would be reminded of Dave ‘I’ll take Christmas off’ Kitson in a pre match interview against the league leaders 9 years after he left!

To be fair, it's not like we haven't been talking up his previous links to the club on here for the last few weeks. I don't think it's unreasonable to talk about these links before his first game, and now before his first home game.

I know it's not exactly cutting edge journalism, but it's Chris Williams and the clubs home channel so it's always going to be a bit cheesy.

Get a win tomorrow and beyond and I don't think anyone will careless if he mentions the Dave Kitson years in every interview.

How many interviews do we think we will get until Chris Williams stops asking Des about the time he used to be at the club?
Sooner rather than later I'd hope. It's a nice story but the board were at pains to stress he was the best man for the job regardless of being a local lad and he's here to do that job now, not reminisce about a decade ago when things were completely different. I understand as the club media man Williams isn't going to ask any tough questions which is fine but I'd rather the focus was on the massive game we've got coming up.

I wouldn't mind Des being a bit firmer and drawing a line under it either.

City Group (or whatever they are called) don't hand out jobs for a laugh. They look for the most talented coaches, which is why they picked Des. The 'local boy' angle is predictable and actually entirely irrelevant. He'll either turn out to be very good (which I think/hope he will) or not. Having said all that, I think we could well lose our next two L1 matches, and I wouldn't blame him at all. I thought we were starting to wobble over the last few games before Manning decided to cut & close. We were lucky to win at Orient- as others have said, we need a bit more 'nastiness' in the side, and we had a poor-ish October. I think we'll end up top 6-8 this season, which given the mess we were in last season is significant improvement.

Agree with this entirely. As I said before the issues in the Cheltenham match all pre-date Des. He needs one transfer window and probably more as well as getting his backroom staff in. We have progressed hugely (on and off the field) over the last 9 months. I may get slated for negativity but given how competitive it is at the top of the league a top six finish I think would be good. That's hard to stomach after being top two for most of the first third of the season but we aren't the finished article yet for the reasons many have outlined. We are moving forward though.
