Only a two-party system will result in the Tories being moved on. America got Trump out because it came down to ‘us v them’ in a straight shootout - it was red v blue and nothing else. Forget the Libertarians; they mean nothing. It’s a two-party system. You can still win the Presidency without winning the popular vote, it isn’t perfect, but it’s still relatively straightforward. You know what you have to do in order to get the keys.
In the United Kingdom, The Conservative party has been completely taken over by the Brexiteers in recent years, and as a result has become more divisive and aggressive than ever. It has barely lost a supporter from before that point but has gained a raft of others, be it through swallowing up UKIP or poaching the poorest and most underprivileged in the country from Labour, who have largely decided that they hate foreign people more than their own country’s failings. The Tories are basically standing on one side of a divide that they have purposefully created, with as good as 100% of the people on that side behind only them. There are multiple parties across from them, some of whom are devolved nation specific, all cannibalising each other. Most of them can’t even agree with each other internally, let alone work together in a cross-party fashion.
Starmer started off reasonably well, but has ultimately ended up trying to stick to Queensbury rules in a street fight. His opponent thinks nothing of jumping him with a knife, but he’s too wrapped up in believing that he stuck to the rules and feeling as though he has won a moral victory. In the age of drama, headlines and sound bites, he has tried to take the higher ground, only he looks as though he has no balls. A lot of people seem to know what he’s against (sort of), but they haven’t got any idea what he’s actually for. Labour is now doing very well in London, it seems, which isn’t a good thing. It appears as though he doesn’t get it.
It wouldn’t matter who is in charge, though, given the simple mathematics at play. The FPTP system is a guaranteed victory for decades to come if you can split the country in two, own the whole of one side and leave the ‘other team’ squabbling and carving up the vote between them. There is absolutely no way past it at present. Labour lost Scotland years ago, and is about to start losing the ‘red belt’ in southern Wales to go along with the wall in the north of England. That isn’t much to do with Starmer IMO; I think he’s failing to stop the rot but I don’t think he caused it. Although you could argue that beyond a certain point, that amounts to the same thing.
Of course, an awful lot of numpties are now pining for you know who, and saying that Labour needs to immediately veer hard and to the left, forgetting that the rot started there. Worst Labour GE defeat in most people’s lifetime and suddenly the solution is to do it all again, while giving the opposition a chance to crow over how chaotic everything is, and how they can’t keep a leader for more than five minutes. Yep. That’ll do it.
This is one of many reasons why I have never subscribed to, or actively been a member of a political party. Most of them are populated by muppets who don’t even understand the country that they’re attempting to govern, and the parties (or party) that do get it are vile, psychotic charlatans who are setting fire to everything while dishing out miniature flags. Such an enticing choice.
Until the so-called left decides to pull together to create a working coalition, to essentially create a two-party system by default, and until someone is wiling to stand up and nail the crooks and conmen to the wall as part of that, everybody might as well go home.
Friday’s, eh? Am I right?!
