International News Covid-19 .....

Hardly. He's let passengers from SA, some most probably infected based on the Dutch experience, go straight through airports and onto public transport. 😡😡😡

Just commenting on the article this morning.

So now I am really confused 🤪🤪.

Has he acted too swiftly and created unnecessary panic, for which he was being chastised. Or has he been slack and not acted swiftly enough, for which he is being chastised?

Make your own mind up. That's how it works. 😉

It was already coming in within 24 hours via Hong Kong, Belgium or Holland (or any ofhte other countries where it is already present but undetected) anyway. Other than a total border closure what realistically could be done to stop it coming in.
The point is so much more could be done. Testing on arrival would be a start.

But what would be achieved? We know track and trace doesn't work to stop it. Isolation doesn't work to stop it. The only measures we've seen working to stop it invoke draconian, heavy lockdowns and the Western European public (judging by what I've seen on the news) aren't going to get on board with that.

So do you advocate 'do nothing' and watch the hospital fill up again?

You shouldn’t be influenced by footage of a few wallies demonstrating. If you believe that you presumably believe the whole of the UK want to glue themselves to the road to stop climate change.

Vaccines are our best hope, but slowing the spread of new variants is really important, especially until we work out more about them.

At the risk of stating the bleedin obvious, we are unfortunately back in the territory of individuals taking personal responsibility. The numbers of unvaccinated people in many parts of the world is simply staggering. I am not referring to 3rd world countries here, but those with ample vaccines and apathetic take up rates. At the risk of sounding smug, and I certainly am not, I have had all 3 jabs and was lucky to get them. I still wear a mask (haven't stopped) and and do 3 LFT's a week. This is party due to the fact I work with ankle biting snot monsters (aka children) and adolescents who are not known for their capacity to social distance. But it's also underpinned by the fact that I would be really upset if I contracted and and passed on the virus.
I heard a caller to LBC today say 'well it's a persons choice if they choose to get vaccinated or wear a mask", Is it!? Of course it is, I suppose, but the people who they may pass it on to if infected wont have the luxury of that choice.
Death rates are down so potentially we can worry less about morbidity, but what about co-morbidities, long covid, mental health implications which emerge during protracted recovery, effects upon families and the things we don't yet know about?
Wear a mask, get the jab/s and stop asking the government to do your thinking for you.

Here endeth etc etc

Well said,

But what would be achieved? We know track and trace doesn't work to stop it. Isolation doesn't work to stop it.

How do we know? The 'government' abandoned track & trace on day 1 then spunked money at clueless consulants, maybe it'll work if they commit to it. Half the population, the ones most at risk either can't afford to take time off or think it's a game.

Be lucky ;)

Anyway, Omicron is little more than a sniffle. (tips hat to Page 1)

Get your jabs.
Wear a mask.
Wash your hands.
Use common sense.

Expecting a shedload of work on Monday having returned from a lovely weekend of socialising with "spare wives" on the South Coast.

Got loads of white stuff all over the place up here..... ❄️❄️⛄

It was 45,000 in Vienna.

How many have glued themselves to the road here in the UK? 25? 100?

You're right that vaccines are our best hope. That is until the first vaccine resistant strain mutates.

The more that the virus is allowed to spread the more it will mutate. Ignore twats in Vienna, listen to the experts (I’m not saying I’m one).

Which experts though? The scientist who discovered the new variant has said we're panicking, and that the symptoms in cases so far are "extremely mild". She's an expert. She also said it was in South Africa for some time before being identified as a variant and that it is already here undetected.

So, back to the original point, stopping SA travellers and testing them would be totally pointless.

The concern seems to be that it may excape the vaccine. Better to be safe than very sorry.

Also SA has a much younger population make up and as we know it affects older people more so SA experience may not be reflected in the uk.

Thats not contextually accurate though is it. It is far too early to tell and the modellers don't have enough data. It may be that the early signs are accurate. On the the hand, what we have learned so far is that complacency hasn't worked

Why have we gone from Delta to Omicron? Or have I missed, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu and Xi? Lol
