General International Call Ups

Yup. I heard exactly the same story from two other sources (one who works for the NI FA, and a former team mate at Glenavon). There was never any issue with Sykes playing for the NI age groups, and no-one ever heard him say he didn't want to play for NI. The NI FA were furious and believed the agent had cooked up the ROI story to get a move. There had been very little interest in Sykes from the ROI. He may get into a squad one day, but he would have got 40-50 caps for NI. Not the best move he will ever make. NI are so angry at the way he pulled out that they would probably not have him back even if he changed his mind, apparently.
Real shame.
He has come of age this season on the pitch.
It sounds as if his agent really didn't do him any favours. It is a small industry and I assume that mud sticks.

Worth noting Darragh Burns, who Oxford were linked with in January has also switched from NI to ROI playing for the U20s. He has also won goal of the month for February: ...nice profile boosting!

With the brexit restrictions as they are, a load of talent is being hoovered up from ROI and NI. A scottish scout was excited for Smyth - a unit for his age with a well rounded game. Sounds like he's developed in the last year and will hopefully be up to speed for next season

Born in the south but switched to the north

Nah. You take what you want from people and if they behave badly to others you generally go, “It happens, I’ll tell them not to do the same here and see how we go.” Nobody cares. If a player or agent being an A*****e stopped a club signing someone then about 80% of transfers would vanish overnight.

We would’ve sold him last summer had Ipswich bid 500k rather than 350k - that’s what we asked for - just as we were happy to sell him the previous summer after the ROI nonsense, just months after we nearly loaned him out to L2.

Much like every footballer he owes nobody anything other than effort and a decent shift when he plays.

Like Asa Hall on steroids.

Very, very weak steroids, mind #whippet

OK fair enough.
That surprises me a little but you have been far closer to this all than I have ever been.

Karl always says we want to have ‘good people’ at the club, I wonder if we’re more wary of known twats and big heads than some clubs are, or if it’s just waffle

What surprises you specifically?
I guess that within industries that I have worked in, people can very easily get themselves a reputation which gets round quickly and this can affect their future employment opportunities .
I get how a footballers value can be very high and clubs can look at the value rather than behaviour.
As I said, you are far closer to how clubs behave than I will ever be , so I understand what you are saying

Yes, that’s precisely it. A footballer who is a dickhead of a person but who scores a fair few goals and rips the opposition in half on a regular basis not only gets you points but probably gets you millions of pounds.

A good number of footballers have their moments - more than many would think. But the clubs, the managers and the directors don’t always behave brilliantly either. The difference is that they’re usually the ones with the platform and the microphone under their noses, and can speak whenever they like without players or agents having a right to reply outside of Twitter. Nasty business.

At least we didn’t sign Nile Ranger, despite trying to do so twice. He might be where what’s left of the line is.

Mark Mcguiness named in Irish u21 sqaud.
With Sean McLoughlin having a good season at Hull.
Would be some achievement Luke McNally makes the senior sqaud.
