Ex Player Jack Stevens

Really think Stevens up against Woolacott pre season would have made it interesting.
Both young, Woolacott was out of contract at the time.

Stevens was very good in the 2020-21 season however his standards dropped last season. I was inclined to give him a pass on it since he contracted COVID at the start of the season and then had glandular fever. Both can be rotten and can impact people in different ways. I was excited to see him line up, refreshed and ready to go, for this season having kicked the bugs into touch. Given the #1 shirt, he’s been bombed out and we all know the reason why …

That said, same horse, different jockey with Stevens this season. A mixed bag of responses from Port Vale fans and the areas of his game that did needed improvement from 2022-23 still seem to be the problem – distribution and stopping shots from distance. He still seems a safe bet for claims at set pieces and reaction stops but that doesn’t really differentiate him from Eastwood who has the same strengths and deficiencies.

What he did have going for him was his age. Eastwood isn’t going to get better at 33 whereas Stevens had the potential to. Whilst goalkeepers peak a bit later, at 25 now we may be seeing the limits of what he can achieve. There’s no shame in being a career League 1 ‘keeper and I think he’ll continue to have a good career in the game. For us to reach the next level, we’ll probably need better*.

*Staying up being the first thing to achieve.

Watched the Port Vale v Stanley game.
His kicking was awful that night, even kicked one against his own defender.
Seemed to effect his whole game.
Was doing very well, confident up to the the Peterborough game. Think Robinson was supposed to be at that game, hasn’t been as assured since then.

Lol - don' think we can blame KR for hat one

Both Eastwood & Stevens have been/could be very goalkeepers. McGinty came with a glowing reputation.
But none of the 3 goalies have performed to their full potential. If this is this case then should we not be asking questions about the coaching staff, in particular the goalkeeping coach Wayne Brown?

Spot on.

Not sure Stevens has improved any of his faults at Port Vale?
Maybe that aays something?

Joins Cambridge for an initial free deal but OUFC “retaining future interest” does this mean we can but him back for the same fee?

Most likely a sell on percentage or a performance related fee

The right move for the player.

I said to give him the benefit of the doubt to kick COVID and glandular fever into touch but he hasn’t improved since then. His blind spots are the same as Eastwood’s so having two identical keepers on our books isn’t worth our time.

Best of luck to him and I do hope he recaptures the form that made him such an asset back in the attendance-less COVID season of 2020-21.

I know many various ulterior motives for his loan last year exist, but I actually agreed with the 'official' line that it was a chance to regain his previous form away from the spotlight, with the hope that he'd return this season to take the #1 slot back.

Sadly the season didn't go as well as hoped, and we can only guess as to the extent that that is or isn't down to his confidence, his illness hangover, and this injury he has apparently been carrying and which if any can be overcome.

I do hope that he can at least stay at league level, even if it is not with us

Away from spotlight ? Stevens played 27 games for Vale of which 8 were cleans sheets and at least 3 MoM games. Vales Defence Xg data was as bad as ours if not worse. Think the lad didn’t do bad apart from mistake at Accrington and him leaving is more to do with Oxfords internal politics with new manager and his brush than anything else.

Hope the lad shines at Cambridge and bigger things happen in future to which Oxford will benefit. Knowing the lad I know that when he comes to Kassam, clapping the yellow army as a way of saying thanks will be on his agenda whatever the score.
