Tommy Caton, lovely bloke, hated crowds, weird when you think he played for Celtic and Sunderland. Ended up in ducklington, such a short life.ON THIS DAY

Apparently we lost 2-3 to QPR at Loftus Road in a game that had an 11am kick-off time on a Monday morning in West London. Just 9,125 turned up of course.
Peter Rhoades-Brown and Dean Saunders for the U’s. Striker Billy Whitehurst was deployed in central defence with Tommy Caton.
Very sad but Tommy played for Man City and Arsenal ( and Charlton after us)Tommy Caton, lovely bloke, hated crowds, weird when you think he played for Celtic and Sunderland. Ended up in ducklington, such a short life.
I remember taking Tommy, Andy Melville and Jenks over to Abingdons ground for a vets match and bumping into joey Beauchamp like it was nothing new. Weird thinking 2 of them are no longer with us.
The shower prank mentioned in that article was told on one of the 'Behind The Badge' episodes, can't remember which one. There were also quite a few more of that ilk throughout the series. The Athletic talks about football initations including a couple of stories from Matt Elliot about when he was with Oxford.
No bananas involved.

That was a really good side, capable of some fantastic results such as the one mentioned, but also capable of getting turned over badly. You never knew what you were getting when turning up, but it was always good fun to watch.ON THIS DAY
