1-1 after Spain went 1 up.

Spain missed a penalty.

The Pole caught him late, if that happened anywhere other then the penalty area it would have been a foul, so what's Danny Murphy on about saying it shouldn't have been a penalty?!

He stamped on his foot, had to be given didn't it?

Danny Murphy talks s**t, it hit the defender as the keeper was coming out, so went past him, not dodgy keeping!

The BBC game thread certainly thinks so. Only angle I've seen was slow mo close up and it looked a pen. Slow mo does that though at times I guess.

I thought the replay where they stopped it at the point of contact was leading the on pitch ref's decision. Slow mo always makes things look 10 times worse.

This penalty begs the question with this being reviewed, why wasn't Sterling's last night even reviewed or why did VAR not refer the blatant rugby tackle on the French player from a cross for the on field Ref to decide?

This is the problem with VAR, the decision making using it remains inconsistent, just like when it is left to the on field Ref. It has to be one way or the other and I vote get rid.

Yup. It’s still a subjective decision being made by a human being. Some things really are just about opinion.

If they used VAR for offside (providing the rules were adapted with this in mind to allow quicker calls) and for things such as off the ball incidents and mistaken identify, then combined with goal line technology it would likely be a welcome addition. The trouble is that it’s now being used to scrutinise and overthink every last thing. This is primarily because the likes of Sky spent years looking at everything in ultra slow motion and making a bigger and bigger deal out of every last call, and whipping people into a frenzy for the sake of a headline, which led to many people crying out for change.

If VAR is used more sparingly and only in genuinely factual instances that have a right or wrong answer, and can be used quickly and efficiently, I think it can work. But only if people also accept that some things are just about opinion and interpretation, and are willing to accept that as part of the game.
