Home Match Day Thread +++ 13/10/18 OUFC v Plymouth Argyle +++

I've just had a good look at the table and I think it might be worth noting that, with the exception of Wimbledon, all the teams we've lost to are currently top half (that includes 6 of the top 8, and 8 of the top 10, although we obviously picked up points at Southend and Sunderland). When we've played teams currently in the bottom half (Burton, Wycombe, Plymouth, AFCW), we've generally picked up points.

Not sure if this is a case of self-fulfilling prophecy (would those top half teams be there if we hadn't gifted them three points?), but might we have had a tougher start to the season than we all predicted when the fixture list was released? We have so far played 9 of the top 12 in 13 games. On paper, we should now be in for a less arduous couple of months in terms of our opposition.

Mackie, as has been said, had a superlative performance. His goal was very well taken but I was so impressed by his movement, his battling and his linkup play. Quite how he won so many balls against two centre half a each a head taller than him I simply do not understand.

Just very good at timing his jumps, according to Radio Oxford. I’ll take that.

Best thing about today: Nelson scoring (Mackie’s celebration for his a close second).

Worst: no one bagging a 3rd. Or 4th.

Got to say that Mackie's was the best individual performance I've seen for ages - nothing sophisticated, just wholehearted and intelligent centre forward play that emphasized just how poor Obika has been. We were so much more solid today - was it 4-3-3? - certainly it was a formation the players understood and were happy playing. We know we've got some pretty good players, today they showed it.

enjoying a beer in the warm glow of a win for the first time in what feels like ages! But going to try and make some rational observations.

Pretty difficult to judge how good we were because Plymouth were just so bad. They absolutely crumbled second half. I can see why their fans were so angry. That said, they have astonishingly short memories - all calling for the managers head, even though they were in pretty much exactly the same position last year and nearly made the playoffs. A bit baffling.

We enjoyed a bit of a perfect storm today. The early goal was exactly what we needed. Mackie, as has been said, had a superlative performance. His goal was very well taken but I was so impressed by his movement, his battling and his linkup play. Quite how he won so many balls against two centre half a each a head taller than him I simply do not understand. And the way he sometimes came short, held the ball up and brought others into play, and others made well judged runs in behind was the kind of quality I’ve not seen in an OUFC front man in ages. His whole battling mindset, proper getting in their faces, was something we’ve not had since at least Hylton.

Others have also singled out Holmes and Browne and while they both had good games (bar some of Holmes’ decision making), I think it’s difficult to say whether they were very good or the Plymouth fullbacks were terrible. Because they really were. But I think Henry deserves credit - showed brilliant close control and looks a really good central midfielder.

Defensively we were solid enough. Dickie was a bit terrorised by their big man for about 50 minutes but we prevented Carey from playing really well. I think Ruffels deserves a mention - thought he was great today. Having Mousinho at CDM has also made us much more solid. Makes us competitive in the air in the middle and is a very intelligent player. I noticed him covering the full backs when they got pulled out of position a few times, plugging holes and making us solid. Credit to KR for the change in shape.

I have to say though that some of the standard of play throughout I haven’t seen since L2. We got it down and played it occasionally, but there were a hell of a lot of aimless hoofs down the channels.

Anything but a win here would have been horrendous, so it’s diffixult to give too much praise. But I’d like to think that now we’ve powered through our injury-hit patch we’re looking better. Two clean sheets in a row and four points. Tentatively regaining hope.
Having a fairly settled line up will help too

Nice to not hear Great Uncle Kip comments on here today.
I thought we played much more like a team today without much weakness. Still think we could do with another striker. Mackie was easily man of the match.
I thought Derek Adams sounded like a dead man walking suggesting Mackie was lucky to stay on the pitch. If anything Plymouth were a bit dirty, which was to be expected. Very pleased Obika wasn’t playing. Two Plymouth fans told me they hoped Obika would play as he runs around around like a headless chicken. Great that Nelson saves a goal for this game.
There were plenty of positives to take. We didn’t lose possession much and the ball was mostly in the Plymouth half.
I wish we had a bit more penetration up front. Must be frustrating for the likes of Holmes with crosses that weren’t effectively taken care of, and Henry having to keep firing from distance

Well done today, Plymouth were awful, but credit where it's due I think we were very good considering the lack of confidence and results recently. Fair play to the players, manager and staff for winning a big game.
I think Browne did some very good things and there were some great runs.... but there were also times when it looked like he couldn't run (one example in the first half when he ran from own left back position, beat their defender, pushed it on to a yellow shirt and then could only stand on the edge of the box rather than pushing on for a further pass, or to be there when the goalkeeper pushed it out in to penalty area after making a save. I'd start Whyte and look to use Samir more as he gets fitter and use Marcus from the bench, or maybe even leave him out whilst he gets back to 100% fitness.
This isn't a criticism at all, he was very good in patches today, but think how good he could be if we get him fully match fit, over his injury and firing on all cylinders.
If we play like that against Gas and Shrews I think we could all be in a more comfortable place for 125 celebrations!

At first I wasn't sure about him, but after seeing his performances against Sunderland, last week against Southend and of course today he seems to be getting a lot sharper and his work rate is second to none. Came across very well in his post match interview again.

Lets not forget Charlton!

God, sorry you can tell I'm not working in London at the moment or I'd have been going... Looking for fourth away win in a row there if we include the Shaun Harvey trophy?

The big difference today was that the players were left to get on with their job, they never had KR and his sidekicks all shouting instructions from the touchline all match. Maybe he is learning at last.

Whoa there. Let’s not get carried away.
Yes we won but come on Plymouth we’re absolutely awful. One of the worst teams I’ve ever seen.
On a positive note Browne and Mackle looked good, Whyte to come back in. Plus a clean sheet.
Let’s prove ourselves with an away win against Bristol (or Scunthorpe) and perhaps we can being to get some confidence and build some momentum.
Plymouth were always going to be poor. Some thought we still had little chance!
We still had to beat them.
One thing however is that Southend were absolutely no mugs at their place.
So 2 good results in a row. Totally agree with you that we need to build on this.

Really?
For most of the players that is totally irrelevant as they can't hear what is being shouted from the side.
Don't you think that the big difference is that we played well? Mackie is fit and playervvery well.
Really not sure that he could have Cared less about shouting from the side!

There was one moment around 65 minutes when Robinson shouted something at Mackie who in turn went berserk back at him. He really gave him a barrelling in return. That was interesting to observe.

Plymouth were easily the worst side I’ve seen in an age. Although I’m sure plenty would have said the same about us a few times this season.
Charlton will be difficult but I’m hoping that we can improve on today and get some results to move out of our precarious position.
Interestingly the four sides promoted two years ago are in the bottom five,
I wonder if we can ship out Obika to Plymouth... I’m sure he’d be better than their strikers

A bit of honesty on the Argyle forum.

We also had a red card for Songo'o, some of our tackles were dirty and desperate.

Very good win, although Plymouth were shockingly bad.

I thought Mackie really put in a shift today and showed what he can be about; once, before we gave him 2 years contract. Still he worked his teeth off. He's the best striker we have by some distance; which says too much.

Brown looked like a proper player while he was on, excellent - hope he can get fit and kick on. Holmes flourished with the ball, Ruffels is so much better than the alternative. Henry was in the mood, and when he's in the mood he's not bad.

And as not-so-wrong UncleKip has mentioned, @Peterdev, playing Mousinho in midfield was a rare and I hope, oft-to-be repeated, piece of sense. Looked much more solid through the team.

We won't play such a pile of shite again this season, unfortunately. So it all hinges on whether Gobbo has the capacity to understand what went right and not pick the team from a hat next time out. I have little faith.
