Ex Player Alex Rodriguez Gorrin

Their first goal was for sure Seddon’s fault, he didn’t stay with his man, and their second goal started when he gave the ball away cheaply. As they said on Radio Oxford, his confidence looks shot and he’s not played well now for a number of games. The thing is it’s not like he’s constantly banging in superb crosses either, he’s just not performing at the moment and could do with a spell out of the team to get his head right.

I think it has potential but it looks like it hasn't been worked on enough yet, he second goal especially was a disaster with defenders getting in each other's way and an attacker being completely free despite being outnumbered. Rheir chance towards the end of the first hald was similar with defenders crossing over leaving a man in acres of space but forrubaltely Stevens bailed us out.

Once they were down to 10 we should have switched it sooner, we were dominating possession and didn't need the extra man at the back.

I think yesterday showed why people wanted a left back in the window. It's not just a case of back up for Seddon or a chance to rest him. It he had been putting in this level of performance elsewhere on the pitch he'd have been dropped but we're in a position where we can't really afford to do it, although if we play 352/532 again and Long is back I'd be tempted to give Williams a go there. Seddon was poor for both goals, although multiple players have some level of responsibility for them.

The wing play and central midfield all worked beautifully for me. The problems were at centre back and centre forward.
For all their goals and chances our back 3 went for the same man leaving another man free.
Up front woes were symbolised by one of William’s balls into the edge of the 6 yard box which three of our stooges failed to get close to connecting with.
Tried to upload a photo but couldn’t manage it. For their first Moore and McNally were having a cuddle with Seddon with Brown marking himself about 2 yards away……

Would like to see Brown replace Seddon for a few games in a back 4
he'd be more defensive for sure .... Seddon needs a rest (IMO)

as for Brown ,I'd like him to lose the manbun .... may be a tad better at winning the ball in the air if he does

Do you prefer your CBs to have wonky noses missing teeth and shaven heads @Sarge 😄 proper hard men lol

Not sure how "Only" Seddon gets the blame for their first, it appeared a complete breakdown in communication between him and Moore and then Mcnally comes across and their fella gets left alone for a tap in

For those saying we did little to break them down, credit has to go to Pompey for superb defending and thus reducing us to long range shots. it's not always simple to just pass around or through opponents who were reduced to having to defend.

To be fair I thought we did break them down, we had plenty of shots in and around the area as well that we didn't catch right or have the ball bounce for us. In the first half Williams hit one early with his left rather than letting it come across his body for a decent chance, Sykes had a couple of efforts from decent positions, one of which Taylor nearly flicked in, Kane and Brannagan both had efforts from bang on the edge of the box. On another day one of those goes in, changes the game and we win comfortably.

We did fine from an attacking standpoint, defensively we limited them to here shots but they were all excellent chances and on another day it could have cost us. I'm willing to give some leeway as it was a new formation with a player who's only been at the club a few days thrown in as well but we've not been great at keeping clean sheets this season and it's something we need to sort out.

Brown lost the initial header then let his man go into the box while he was in no man's land . Bit rusty maybe but didn't see too much myself in him but only first match.

I don’t think we’ve cracked it offensively at all, it took 2 wonderstrikes out of nowhere to get us goals, we created fairly little against 10 men, Seddon offered nothing and was really poor imo, no idea what you think his job is but it can’t be attacking or defending

I do not mind the idea of three at the back, but I don’t think Seddon is any more suited to it then he is a back 4, I will not completely lose faith in him because he’s definitely shown something this season despite looking pretty poor quite often as well, but I don’t think he’s shown since he’s been here he can take players on, or that he will make runs in behind, and he doesn’t cross from deep much either so being isolated out wide doesn’t seem ideal really, as he had no one to get him into good positions, and his defence has been pretty poor all season so We obviously need to work out how to get the best from him but to be honest I am struggling to see how we do it

No matter what league we are in next season we need proper competition for places at full back & that’s not wingers/midfielders to fill that spot

Sam Long’s form hasn’t been terrible but hasn’t hit the heights of last season, where as Seddon’s has been like a yo-yo started the season off great then went through a dip came back started to do really well again but in the last half a dozen games or so he’s been awful (passing, decision making, crossing & defending hasn’t been good enough for a long time now) he should of been the player taken off yesterday instead of Brown when we changed to a back 4

If we get promoted to the championship we need two better full backs as first choice next season

I will probably say it’s him being rusty and getting tensed to playing with a new team, but he can’t let that happen again.

With 3 at the back you don't play a full back as your left wing back option
Sorry KR does
Hoping not one of his infamous blind spots

I know that a few on here were suggesting that in Gorrin's absence, we need another defensive midfield player.
Kane has been played there and gives us far more attacking threat and speeds up our attacks
Gorrin at times gives the back 3/4 more defensive cover.
We can defend in big games (Ipswich away and Rotherham at home) If we sit deeper.
Would Gorrin have played many games had he been fit? Pompey away and that kind of game? Presumably not the games we have to win?

The change of shape to playing wingbacks would have limited his game time unless you played Kane or CB at 10. No doubt he would have played against the stronger teams though.

This is a fair point. I’d say, with the additions we’ve made, Gorrin would more often play in the games we can’t afford to lose/come on to shore up the midfield when we are holding a lead etc. Still for me an absolutely vital role, and one that our record this season might suggest we’ve not been able to fill sufficiently in his absence.
