Matches The League 1 Promotion Run In

How odd, it let me read it without registering. A screenshot from the article...

So, in short, Wycombe did what Wycombe always do - won, and then the Plymouth social media team wrote a mean (but probably factual) tweet about it?

As rivalries go, it's not exactly Boca Juniors/River Plate is it?

It’s more like ‘so she said, so I said, ..,’

Maybe they were arguing whose name gets the highest scrabble score. Wycombe win by one (but if you do PPL - points per letter, Oxford go ahead).

Wycombe really are desperate for a rivalry, any rivalry.
Honestly, we don't really see Plymouth as rivals. Plymouth fans are much more invested in this rivalry than we are

From our perspective, Plymouth are simply a hilarious side-show who we nearly always beat, whilst winding them up as much as possible with our dark arts in the process. We always bring out the A-game time-wasting against Plymouth, and it's utterly glorious to see how upset their fans get every single time. The fume is incredible

Ainsworth knows this, so pumps it to the maximum whenever we face them, and I think the agitation gets through to the players. There's not one team I'm ever more confident of getting a result against than Plymouth

I also saw this article when I did a quick search......but couldn't summon up the enthusiasm to register at Football365 in order to read it!

Just press the SKIP button.

But it’s not a rivalry. Right.
I wasn’t too fussed before, but after that last sentence I hope that pie face is smiling tonight. :)
Don't understand how being confident of getting a result equates to a rivalry? I'm confident of beating Crewe too, but have nothing against them

Also, I'm heading off to Fratton Park in a few minutes because we're playing Portsmouth today, not Plymouth

Oops my mistake. Can’t really tell the difference. Both sailors with funny accents.

Wycombe should maybe go for a rivalry with MK Franchise....for obvious reasons ... one of which being based at opposite ends of the same county

AFC Wombles may not like that though

Isnt there a rivalry (of sorts) bizarre though it may be , between Wycombe and Colchester ?

We do have a rivalry with MK. I dislike them far more than any other team

And yeah, Colchester is an old one going back to the early 90s when both teams were competing at the he top of the Conference. I've never really felt it though cos I've only been going for the last decade and we've not played them much recently. Another soulless ground to visit though, like MK and Oxford

Out of curiosity, why do Wycombe & Plymouth have a fractious history?

I always thought that - other than everyone getting annoyed at their general cheating - noone could really summon up the energy to give much of a damn about Wycombe!?
Ok, fair question.

We only started playing them in 1994, and honours are pretty even overall...recently they have a good record at Home Park and deservedly tonked us earlier in the season.

Rivals. Not in the true sense. More a team that we have disliked for some of their on and off field antics.

What is undoubtedly true is that in recent seasons they have managed to get under the skin of both the manager Derek Adams ( who was no slouch at doing the same to opponents) and definitely the fans. And as a biased observer I can see why. I have seen spurious head injuries, players who have dragged themselves form off the pitch back on to stop the game, multiple time wasting and referee badgering. Trainers called on and then slowly ambling the longest route off the pitch. I have even witnessed the groundsman trying to stop the team warming up in the goal mouth practising crosses whilst the Wycombe keeps was going the exact same drill at the other end!

On the down side the injury to Lynch refereed to by Wanderer was perceived as time wasting by Argyle fans and the booing that ensued was not appropriate, sporting or justified .....

So in effect they think they can glean an advantage by doing all the things we dislike them for, and to an extent in that it winds up the fans , I think they are right. We are far from the only club that dislikes them for it, and despite the Voice of Silvikrins cheery media persona, it comes from the top....

Rivalry...not really.....very little discussion of them on our message board until the matches come around. And proportionately less than appears on theirs from when I have been on there. We have chippy fans that pop up on their site ....and frankly that just tells them they are winning the psychological battle. I have had sensible conversations on their site too.....

I think it would be better for Argyle if they returned to their 1994 status from our perspective. A small club, not too far away compared to most, of which we know little. No more important to us than Gillingham or Colchester or Southend.

So I probably shouldn't be doing April Fools posts on Pasoti about their new sponsorship deal with Timex etc etc.like I did last year :)

Loveable rogues.

Yes that’s not rivalry, it’s just justified dislike of their cheating. I don’t have anything against them as a club - I like small suburban clubs - but will be glad when their manager leaves and is replaced by someone interested in sport.

I was getting ready to post here saying "I'll update this on Monday because I just can't face it after that defeat". What ridiculous scenes! McNally fast becoming one of my favourite players. Here's how it's looking after this weekend:

1647710794171.png

The things worth noting today:

- An absolute DREAM weekend for Plymouth. 3 good points against Accrington, who they absolutely battered, 5 wins from their last 5, up to 4th with a game in hand on all the challengers below bar Wednesday. They're entirely in the driving seat, and may well decide who else gets in the playoffs given they still play Ipswich, Sunderland, Wycombe and us. Win their game in hand on Tuesday and they'll be in the playoffs - but given their form, and the fact they still play Wigan and MK, and Rotherham's big dip in form I would not entirely rule out a very late autos charge from them. I'm sure @pafcprogs is bouncing tonight!

- On Rotherham, that's now 5 points from their last 5. Wigan, MK and now Plymouth will be licking their lips because suddenly they look vulnerable, and their run in is one of the trickiest in the league. MK in particular have a really decent run in, and should get 9 points from their next 3 putting them on 85 with 4 to go... I really think we could see Rotherham in the playoffs and Wigan and MK going up autos.

- Onto us now. How on earth are we still in such a strong spot after this weekend?! We were RUBBISH. But thankfully Sunderland, Wycombe and Wednesday all dropped points to teams below them in the table. Wednesday dropping points to Gillingham is particularly baffling of a result. We had the toughest game today, so to come away with a point with 3 of our biggest rivals also failing to win is a fantastic weekend - especially given how poor that second half was.

- Shrews put 3 past Rotherham and 5 past Cambridge this week, which puts into perspective how good our win last weekend was.

- Two week break for us now until we go to Home Park - Plymouth host Cheltenham on Tuesday and travel to Ipswich next weekend, but still have a full week before facing us so I can't see there being any fitness advantages for us. Would absolutely take a point.

- Ipswich... Are they out of it now? They were very good today, but somehow didn't win, and now need to get 2 points per game for the rest of the season, including games against Plymouth, Rotherham and Wigan. Much like Pompey I think the job is just too big for them now. Lose to Plymouth and they're done.

- Last thing to note - Luke McNally will play in the Premier League. Brilliant, brilliant player.

Great read as usual, but thought Luke McNally had a poor game yesterday (along with most of the team I may add), but got that vital equaliser in the last minute.

Good link here if anyone wants to have a go:

My Results. Hope I'm wrong obviously. Have us losing away to Plymouth & Rotherham, usual draw against Sunderland, and the rest as wins.

1 Wigan 99
2 Rotherham 97
3 MK Dons 86
4 Sheffield Wed 86
5 Plymouth 84
6 Wycombe 83
7 Oxford United 82
8 Sunderland 81
9 Portsmouth 74
10 Ipswich 73
I just did this and had us finishing 7th as well on 81, a point behind both Wycombe and Sunderland.
Obviously could fluctuate massively on a few results, but do think it shows that we are going to need low 80’s to get into the playoffs this year. Winning our ‘easier’ games won’t be enough.

I remember the Derek Adams incident.

It’s the moment that exposed Ainsworth to be ‘that’ kind of manager.
