Ex Player Alex Rodriguez Gorrin

I know that a few on here were suggesting that in Gorrin's absence, we need another defensive midfield player.
Kane has been played there and gives us far more attacking threat and speeds up our attacks
Gorrin at times gives the back 3/4 more defensive cover.
We can defend in big games (Ipswich away and Rotherham at home) If we sit deeper.
Would Gorrin have played many games had he been fit? Pompey away and that kind of game? Presumably not the games we have to win?

So if you look over the past month or two - Gorrin would definitely have helped us in the three games we lost (Pompey, Bolton, Accrington). I think Gorrin would have played most of the away games and tough home games. And at times, Herbie's defensive deficiencies (and tendency to overplay) were exposed in those games.

But the counterargument would probably be that Gorrin would also have played at Charlton, and there he might have held us back. Our defense was solid enough at the Valley against a toothless attack, and we were glorious in attack......if we'd have had to sacrifice one of our more attacking players to accommodate ARG, then we might have been slightly less glorious.

Against the likes of Cambridge and Burton, he would likely have warmed the bench for most of the 90. Maybe come on to shore things up at the end.

Let's be honest, if the Shrews had any attacking ability, we'd have been in trouble yesterday - because they got in behind us down the flanks an absolute ton. Thankfully they were utterly inept in the final third so we were able to steal the 3 points. But if we could have had ARG shoring us up defensively, instead of the ineffectual Holland, then I think we would have been better placed - because we would have made things tougher for them going forwards AND because his defensive responsibility would have allowed Cam and the Wing Backs to pour forwards with a little more confidence.

I'm not going to argue the general point of gung ho attacking vs. defensive solidity, because I promised I wouldn't and would just roll with it for the rest of the season!

But the one thing that is inarguable is that, because of KR's squad construction, we don't have options. Gung Ho attacking is the only way we can play because you can count the number of players who are talented defensively on one hand.....and most of them weren't available yesterday!

I take your point, but think that there is an alternative.
The two games, Ipswich away and Rotherham at home both had Kane playing deepest in midfield.
Both were against very very good attacks and in both cases we sat back more than normal and registered a clean sheet.
So I reckon it is partly mindset and tactics rather than necessarily being just due to whether Gorrin plays or not.
In addition the 3 at the back gives us more defensive options?

The new Irish lad can/is a holding midfielder isn’t he? Don’t know how fit he is but playing the last twenty minutes to see out games probably isn’t going to be beyond him.

I'm not sure we can really claim the Rotherham game as a shining example of Oxford defensive solidity - they had 16 shots on goal, and some outstanding chances. We only kept a clean sheet because they left their shooting boots in Yorkshire, and hit the woodwork (twice) more times than they hit the target (once)!

But anyways - I've done this analysis on here before, but by my reckoning we have a total of four players in our squad who are genuinely good defenders - McNally, Long, Moore, Brown. Yesterday showed that we can perhaps still keep Mous on the list as well.....although how many games his body can stand up to is surely an open question.

3-at-the-back makes tons of sense because it enables us to play three of those players in positions that they are most comfortable in (without a doubt for four of them, and even Sam is, I think, better in a back three than as a RB in a four) - and therefore it optimizes our defensive capabilities.

But this is still an incredibly attacking formation. Both of our WBs work hard, but neither of them are good defenders; and both Kane & Brannagan are better going forwards than they are defensively. Hence even one of the worst attacks in the division created tons of chances against us yesterday.

It still works more often than not because we are so good going forwards.

The back three generally played very well yesterday; the weaknesses were at wing back, Sykes especially. He played like he was ill.

Williams is nuggety and of course made our second goal but he’s really too short to be a ‘good’ defender.Long balls into the space behind him were hurting us second half.

On the other hand….where we are much stronger this season is we have pace throughout the team. Whyte and McNally are lightning. And Sykes (usually) and Williams are not far behind.

We’ve missed him at various points since his injury. An enforcer that will always take one for the team, and often mops up danger, and you need this kind of player for certain fixtures. That we have struggled in.

Great to see the lad back in the training centre.

Anybody know if A-Rod is going to be offered a new contract? I certainly hope so..

Brannagan for me, he’s been superb.

Honourable mentions for McNally & Taylor 👏🏼👏🏼

think Brannagan will win it

with McNally getting young player of the season

Taylor n Sykes honourable mentions
