International News Immigration

Now down to 8 people on the flight. More legal challenges today. Could be less than 5 by take off

The estimated cost of this flight alone is £500,000 (over 217,000 free school meals for context). And that's before you consider the legal cost to the state of fighting the individual appeals, the vast majority of which the government are losing.

There is also the carbon footprint of that flight also.

I also understand that if Rwanda doesn't accept them, they will be deported to their "country of origin", if that can even be established with any certainty.

I fully expect our shabby little deal with Rwanda includes us footing those repatriation costs too.

And I do hope they have made sure that all those being deported are fully up to date with their MMR, diphtheria, tetanus and polio, COVID, Hep A and Typhoid vaccinations, as recommended for most travellers from the UK. And I am sure they have given them a full course of anti Malaria treatment over the last few weeks, as Rwanda is a high risk malaria country.

Some travellers are also recommend to get Cholera, Hep B, Rabies, TV and Yellow Fever, depending on their health.

I'm sure the government have taken this into account and aren't putting these people at increased unnecessary risk which may be in contravention of their human rights. And no doubt the government (sorry, we) will foot the bill for all of this.

It also looks like we are looking at somewhere around a 10-15% success rate, given the number of successful appeals. I'm not sure that is really going to deter desperate people from being smuggled across the channel in a dinghy... they've already risked everything to get that far.

It’s a half baked proposal.
There must be a better, more cost effective way to deal with this situation.
Hundreds coming over on boats that are unsafe with the French disclaiming any responsibility for them.
This country is already in financial trouble and all the options looked at are costing more. Any high court appeals will line the pockets of judges and the legal profession

Wonder why that is?
Maybe it is that almost 10% of the population in France is now made up of migrants and that France isn`t very welcoming...

"The (French) government needs to drastically change its approach: put an end to the repeated evictions of migrant encampments and abusive policing, provide adequate accommodation providing sufficient stability and assistance to allow people to make informed choices, and offer meaningful options to seek regular status, in France, elsewhere in the European Union, and in Britain."

Oh, HRW agrees that migrants should be properly processed and documented....... 🤷‍♀️

Which they can do post-Brexit where we (checks notes) took back control of our borders…….oh.

so it’s Frances fault that we are sending people to Rwanda …..gotcha.

We have a real problem with immigration in the Uk at the moment and it will only get worse. We are living longer and reproducing children less and so will be In a society where we need people to wipe old folks arses and pick our food but because we haven’t had kids we’ll need to import them. The problem is that people don’t generally like people that aren’t indigenous to wipe their a**e so you end up with a populist govenment that reacts to the wishes of a nation that doesn’t understand the balancing act that a government needs to do and you end up in a mess.

Rather than a government that panders we need a government that can properly understand the reality of government of leadership with states-person like dignity.

I shouldn’t worry.

By the time the aged population is so large and so costly to care for, the laws of euthanasia will drastically be relaxed to ease the burden.

You know how it works with government policy 😉

Well, looks like it will probably be 1 person aboard one of Privilege Style's 4 planes (could be up to 8, but unlikely). Given that unless they use the "executive" plane, there is going to be plenty of choice amongst the 200 seats if they are allowed to choose.

We are sending people because they didn`t want to play by the rules.

Likewise, folk can migrate legitimately and get work in a huge range of careers.

Just do it legally. 🤷‍♀️

Do you think so many people would risk their lives crossing the channel if it was that easy?

That's the point, the government have made it so difficult and the whole approach so hostile that it has brought us to this terrible situation - this is of their own making. And they are using it for maximum political capital to enthral those who are scared of people who look and sound different to them.

But you knew all that already and still you support it.

And now Bojo is floating the idea to pull out of the ECHR (not to be confused with anything to do with the EU).

You know, the collective body set up following the atrocities of WW2 and the way Stalin treated Russian subjects and those under Soviet control, so that no nation could oppress and subjugate its own people.

I guess we'd be in good company, seeing as Russia recently voted to pull out too....

We don’t need a huge range of careers we need people to wipe arses and pick fruit ( not necessarily in that order)

If you are educated or rich it’s easy to get in and I agree we need to do it legally which is why it would be helpful to process these people in Calais but that doesn’t fit with the government need to have them displayed as baddies

Certainly need some humane arrangement in Calais. These people are desperate for a better life.

The only issue here is what then happens if they are processed in Calais and rejected? Back to the dinghy and then what?

First and foremost we need to provide much better resources in Calais to facilitate the correct legal process for everyone and provide much better conditions to stop the dinghy’s.

Anyone then trying to cross in a dinghy should expect to be sent on their way.

The U.K. can’t accommodate everyone seeking asylum, but they are human beings and deserve fair treatment.

But they are baddies if you are a Tory because they will blatantly vote labour or liberal

We are not the only country in the world they can migrate to. Stay in France. Belgium. Germany. Wherever.

Argument against this is always that they only speak english

An awful lot of them don’t

Also if I migrated to [insert country] I’d expect to have to learn their language pronto

Nobody have said we should. Even the Lib Dems have said the numbers should be capped at 10,000 (Layla Morgan on QT).

They do. Germany took in 1 million in 2015 alone.

Guys, please post coherent arguments not bullshit. Ta.
10,000 a day probably.

Bullshit?

I thought I posted a reasoned comment? You seem to have edited some of my comments 🤷🏼‍♂️
I think it was the point about not being able to accommodate all asylum seekers. If they are seeking asylum and not economic migrants then we have a duty of care. We take in a lot less than most countries in Europe even before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
