I don't think much goes through their heads really. Apart from too much alcohol and probably a bit of the white stuff. It's a bizarre thing, trying to show how hard you are by blindsiding an unexpected victim who wasn't looking for a fight. It amazes me what goes through people's heads. Your team has just made it to Wembley and your first thought is to have it out with the opposition players... crazy!
The sad thing is that a pitch invasion at the end of the season can be a joyful, harmless thing, even if it’s not allowed. But it’s completely ruined by pratty youths attacking opposition players - some of whom will probably end up playing for their club one day.
Andy Crosby assistant manager.
Dean Whitehead, first team coach.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone decides to invade the pitch, particularly when they've asked not to do so. It's never harmless, not least because it prevents the majority of fans from enjoying success and celebrating it with the team. Frankly, it's selfish. The sad thing is that a pitch invasion at the end of the season can be a joyful, harmless thing, even if it’s not allowed. Exactly, what it does is rob teammates and staff of the opportunity celebrate with each other in the moment after the full-time whistle or winning a penalty shootout, and it's a danger for opposition players too. They'll be at best goaded when they're at their lowest and fuelled with adrenaline, and worse is attacks on players like Billy Sharp will happen. For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone decides to invade the pitch, particularly when they've asked not to do so.
