Well that was a pleasant surprise, great result!
I was a bit "meh" when we signed Williams, as I'd never seen anything from him to impress me, and after Forde was injured in the warm-up, and I saw Williams lining up at RB, my heart sank, and I was anticipating a mauling down that right side.
But after that performance, Williams has gone right up in my estimation, he displayed courage in his tackling, intelligent use of the ball, and got forward really well, with pace and purpose, with great running to get himself in a position to score his goal, which he took brilliantly, and in such an unfamiliar role, looked like he had a genuine understanding of his positional awareness, and I applaud him for coming in and adapting at such sort notice, and putting in a MOTM performance in an unfamiliar position
But the whole team played well:
Stevens- Made a great save early in the first half, and came off his line to catch a number of crosses very well. Kicking really must improve though.
Seddon- What a find! Great performance up and down the left side, class act, and so far looks to be a big upgrade on Ruffels.
McNally- Shaky start, looked like he struggled to find his bearings to begin with, but then settle into the game well, and was very solid and comfortable after that, looks like he's gonna be another excellent CB for the club.
Thorniley- Had a very good game, solid, and marshalled the defence well, and helped McNally a lot, looks like a real leader, lets hope we can keep him.
Gorrin- He's back! When he plays like that, he's irreplaceable, broke up play brilliantly, recycled the ball well, looking comfortable on the ball, passing well, and provided an excellent shield in front of the back four, and a solid base for Henry and Brannagan in front of him.
Henry- I said the other day, that I didn't think Henry was a midfielder, and that I thought he struggled in that role. Well after that performance, consider me well and truly corrected! He was brilliant, full of energy, lovely intelligent passes and link up play, pressed and closed down well and got stuck in, looked like a totally different player.
Brannagan- He's back! A really energetic display, looks like he's got his bite back, with some strong tackling, and some very good passing, and a great finish for his goal. The Brannagan of a couple of seasons ago, and on that form, he's gonna attract a lot of attention.
Sykes- Had a very good game, so much better on the right side of the pitch, looks much more comfortable, hit a number of very good crosses, and tracked back well to provide support for Williams. One of his best games in my opinion.
Whyte- I'm not convinced by him on the left to be honest, he did some good stuff, such as a good shot in the build to the first goal, but I felt he was a different player once he switched to the right side, and looked much more dangerous and his general play was then much more effective.
Winnall- Surprised me to be fair! I was dumbfounded to see him starting ahead of Taylor, but he really put a shift in, and did a lot of good work, and used the ball well, but he does lack sharpness, as his horrific miss from 5 yards out showed. But there is a player there, he just needs an injury free spell, and a spark.
Overall, a very good team display, some lovely, intricate one and two touch passing, in neat little triangles, we looked quick with the ball, and everybody put in a spirited, committed display, and made a decent Charlton side look pretty ordinary.
A great occasion, and it felt great to be back, even if I did have bird s**t all over my seat!
Bring on Crewe, I can't bloody wait!
