My two main observations coming out of that embarrassment are:
1) I don't mind losing. It's the manner we're losing that's so horrible to watch. The thing about this loss, and those to Hull, Pompey and Blackpool, and the game against MK until Agyei came on, is we have been held at arm's length so comfortably by the opposition. It's not like we're scrapping, pushing for second balls, making chances that just aren't going our way, we literally don't even get the ball. The opposition totally marshal us, and it's just horrible to watch. We weren't at any point 'knocking on the door' tonight after we went behind, we didn't create a thing. If it was a one off, you'd write it off as a bad day at the office, 'they did a job on us', unlucky etc. But it's happened too many times in a short amount of time now. It doesn't help that every match we play right into their hands with opportunities to kill the game, there are so many stupid fouls and misplaced, unnecessary passes that just give them the opportunity to kill 45 seconds while they jog over for the ball. It's tear-your-hair-out frustrating. If a player is standing over the ball with his back to you, DON'T RUN INTO THE BACK OF HIM. HE WILL GO DOWN AND IT WILL BE A FOUL. It's f*****g infuriating.
2) I get that circumstances change and we have to go 'more direct' on occasion, and if anything it's almost a positive that we have recently at least tried to develop a 'Plan B' style. But why have we completely stopped even trying to play anything resembling passing football? When you build a team based on technical ability and slick passing (Forde, Taylor, Brannagan, Henry etc.), why do you then just launch the ball into the channels every single time you have possession? It's like being back in League Two ffs. The reason Agyei looked so good tonight is because he's the only player who's really physically suited to that style of play, and while he's very good at it, there's a reason that style of play is supposed to be our Plan B. He'll get pelters because he didn't affect the game at all tonight, but what is Shodipo supposed to do when every time the team gets the ball there's not even a thought of playing it along the ground and creating space, and instead launches it at Sam Winnall? There was one moment in the second half when Gorrin received the ball from the left, spun 180 degrees, and played the ball along the ground to the onrushing Forde, who was in space. It stood out like a sore f*****g thumb because it was the only time we played anything resembling football all game. Can you imagine us scoring a goal like the McGuane - Long - Shodipo goal v Burton at the moment? Not a chance in hell.
KR got it wrong with his selection tonight. I can see the logic in rotation but literally everyone on here had misgivings as soon as they saw that team. That's fine, managers have to make judgment calls and he got this one wrong. But I'm more worried about the wider point that we have lost any semblance of an identity or style of play. I appreciate McGuane being out isn't ideal as he was a key component of controlling that midfield engine, which is so essential to a successful KR side, but our entire style of play can't be based on a single player. This isn't just a blip: we've been scraping results for a while now and, but for remarkable last gasp penalty saves and last minute equalisers, as well as an absolutely kamikaze Doncaster performance, we'd be in a really precarious position.
