International News Immigration

Get on with processing their claims. It’s what the Home Office is paid to do. If there’s a backlog, increase the number of staff.
Those fleeing Oppression, War or Famine, get granted asylum. Those who aren’t, are returned to the country of their citizenship.
If the Home Office was doing it’s job properly, there would be no camps in Calais, and no dangerous channel crossings.

Also, there isn’t now a legal route for Asylum Seekers. You can’t claim asylum unless on UK soil. And as soon as they do that, they’ll be carted off to Rwanda!

Lack of oppression, war or famine in France last time I checked.

If the EU is so wonderful then why aren`t they staying? Is because the EU don`t want them either?

Where do you think illegal, undocumented migrants end up?
Why are they illegal and undocumented in the first place?

That's right, the boys and girls you continuously cheerlead for want it that way, so they can justify their removal/refuse their entry in the first place.

See the post above....make legal routes accessible rather than turning the victims into scapegoats at the same time. It's not hard if you have the will and no....it won't ruin our country....far from it.

How much presently does it cost to house the 1000s that have made it across the channel( and are still making it across in their 100’s daily)

Then the cost of 4 star hotels and then provide them with 3 meals a day, a mobile phone plus spending money daily?

After all, army barracks that were good for our troops, weren’t good enough for these. Makes you think of the appeal of the rough sleepers in Calais.

If this move deters the majority, maybe they’ll think France isn’t that bad after all. The whole country will be better off…

As for Ukrainians - do many of them set sail illegally from France?
of course none of that is entirely true.
the vast vast majority are not housed in anything like 4* hotels. that was mostly an exception during covid. Only 1 in 48 was actually in a hotel and only for days until other accommodation was sorted.
they don't get mobile phones
they get £5 a week to cover things like calls
The army barracks they were kept in had been left to rot (the Infantry Junior Leaders Battalion moved out in 1991) and indeed was in the process of being sold off for redevelopment as housing. So good enough for troops at a point in history, but the army wouldn't use them in the condition they are in now.

There are legal routes.

If people choose to ditch their paperwork there will be consequences.

If people choose to take illegal routes there will be consequences.

Actions and consequences eh.....

The EU wasn’t good enough for you!!

The EU countries do take in many asylum seekers. Have you seen what they've done for Ukrainians which this country is embarrassingly not with Priti Awful trying to blame it on the 'Windrush generation' situation which was a Tory "hostile environment" policy anyway. Of course, Priti Awful has to go even further with this with Johnson's agreement.

I reckon Rees-Mogg must have been extolling the benefits of the UK's old policy of Transportation to Australia. ;)

So where are the 1000s that are arriving monthly staying?

The last 2/3 days we are approaching a 1000.

Why fish the crossing when France is stable from war ?

Also, Interesting to see your sources as well.

If the army barracks aren’t suitable, does that justify them being targeted by the then residents with arson?

Fancy that learning from previous mistakes.
Isn`t that what makes us better?

As for Ukraine these are the issues that being hasty creates...

This is all looking very "dead cat on table" given that a week ago refugee minister Lord Harrington said "If it's happening in the Home Office on the same corridor that I'm in, they haven't told me about it. But we're having difficulty enough getting them from Ukraine to our country – there's no possibility of sending them to Rwanda."
Now who would have thought a PM needing to distract from things would swiftly come up with a distraction.
A distraction that is apparently going to cost an initial £120million to house refugees in a place called Hope House which has 50 rooms. So its the very thinnest on veneer to make it look like they are "tough", but isn't really going to do anything, apart from cost a lot of money.

You mean they've learnt by doubling down on their previous 'hostile environment' policy?

And on the Ukraine refugees, that is common sense. No reason for the embarrassing response by this Govt to refugees and using 'Windrush' as a very random excuse which bears no scrutiny.

You know, they could have used that 1 billion or whatever is going to spent on this to help subsidise the rising cost of living. Or is that too socialist?

Playing to their core demographic - Daily Express and Daily Mail readers.
It's an Australian thing and just headlines, this will never get off the ground- no pun intended. Just look at their record, they're incapable of organizing anything. It will be outsourced to Mitie who will promise everything and deliver nothing.

As a sovereign nation we can set our own migration policy.

In doing so it is wise not to make the same mistakes that happened to others.

Of course we could just leave it as it is, empowering the people smugglers and if a few die along the way so be it.

Then folk would be saying "Why aren`t they doing anything?".

A balance of carrot (legal routes, come on in) with stick (do it illegally and its Rwanda for you).

Never really understood how it is a distraction. This simply magnifies the fuckwittery at the heart of this government for most, other than the usual Tory doormats and Billy Britain Faragista types of course.

And? They aren't correcting their 'hostile environment' mistakes, they are doubling down on them.

Talk us through how successful those legal routes are for Ukrainians....

Yes, but they are playing on the public having short attention span. Fill the news with something else and they will forget about the other thing. The number of announcements they have made they have u-turned on is huge, they really aren't that incompetent, they are just putting stuff out there tactically.

Gavin?

There are plenty of hotels that have closed to everyday business in return for a full hotel of people who crossed from France illegally.

Is this ok? How much will this be costing?

For reference, Google, Britannia hotels..

Bloomin silly move now, when we all know more fines are incoming...and for more serious breaches.

Maybe they are hoping those fines will only happen after the Local Elections so the drubbing isn't quite so bad[emoji2369]

Desperate measures on their part I guess....
