What have you been listening to lately?

A quick shout-out to The Reytons for getting to Number 1 in the album charts this week. No record label, no big cash backing, they have just had to work bloody hard. Tour dates last year all sold out and bouncing. Maybe now the record industry will pay some attention to them.

Who was at RIDE Toronto concert ?

Mark Gardener- when not touring/ recording - is often at home games

I saw Mark at MK Dons a few years back just after they’d played at Brighton Concorde2. I know I should let him get on without bothering him it he was near me in the concourse so I told him I enjoyed the gig.

Also Phil Selway I’ve seen at a few away games. He played some of his solo music at my local venue on Friday which was a nice evening.

Went to school with Mark and Andy from Ride. I saw Andy’s dad recently and apparently he’s a st holder at the Emerites. Mark always used to be in the London Road end back in the day. Both always really nice down to earth guys.

I think Andy Bell’s dad was something high up at the Bodleian library?

This sent me off listening to Andy Bells solo stuff. I kind of missed it when it came out but I’m really loving both albums.

I’ve been catching up on more recent Todd Rundgren releases. Really enjoyed Runddans (electronic prog) and Space Force (more typical TR songs).

Went to the Bullingdon on Thursday to see Jonny Payne and The Thunder who were pretty good but I came away very impressed by the support band I saw, Bedd a 6 piece Oxford band. I'm definitely keeping an eye out for any future gigs by them.
Missed the first support act as I was led astray by the Guinness in the Black Swan

The new Steve Mason album 'Brothers and Sisters' is very good

Live at the O2 in Oxford on April 22nd

Saw Beth Hart in Birmingham recently, a good night, turned up to see her in solo show at the London Palladium last Friday to find the show was cancelled at last minute due to illness. You win some, you lose some, unless you are OUFC of course

Steve Mason trivia ( with a tentative Oxford link)

one of his first recordings was with Mod band Knave who had a couple of singles released on specialist mod label Detour in the mid-late 90s- he was one of the drummers in Knave

He has/had a decent collection of Italian Lambrettas

Prior to The Beta Band , ( and King Biscuit Time ) he lived in Oxford for about 6 months, hanging out with Oxford Roadrunners Scooter club during his time in Oxford

I agree with @Foley .... the new album 'Brothers and Sisters' is very good

sadly cant make the Oxford gig on 22nd April as Im booked to DJ a weekender

Mrs Merritt and I caught Suede in Birmingham earlier in the week, they were sensational. Brett Anderson was on top form. If you haven't given their latest album a listen, it is well worth it.

Britpop trailblazers .... Brett Anderson always was a great frontman live, glad to hear he still is too :)
We've seen them loads of times, not seen Brett quite as animated as he is on this tour he is well into it. He was drenched with sweat within 4 songs :ROFLMAO:

I saw them play in Guildford earlier in the month. Only five minutes walk from home too. It's a shame the venue G Live is a decent 1700 capacity when mixed seating and standing size but doesn't get bands on the touring circuit. Possibly because it tends to attract, well the type of people you'd expect in Guildford, white middle-class middle-aged men and womeo. So instead we get comedians, tribute bands, Strictly "stars" and legacy bands who haven't had a hit for decades. Probably not surprising because the audience politely clap rather than bouncing around. Paul Weller played soon after it first opened as he had played the previous incarnation of the civic hall and was a Woking boy, but hasn't been back since.

Anyway, Brett put on a great show, mixed the hits up with some new stuff. I couldn't name any of the rest of the band though.
