Home Match Day Thread +++ 01/01/2018 OUFC v MK Dons match day thread +++

We were much better today as we pressed high and we hunted in packs when we lost the ball which was also pleasing to see. I also think it helped to have pace in the team as it gave us outlets/options, and having two strikers. Just at times if felt that we lacked options in the middle. On quite a few occasions when we were looking to get forward there didn't seem to be options.

Having mentioned the positives today, what makes it disappointing/frustrating is, why don't we play like this more often/generally or at least look like we want to play like this e.g. high intensity?

Like post earlier, I thought Martin was MOTM as he made so crucial interceptions which kept us in the game at the time and gave us a platform to build on.

Regarding the support today in terms of the Ultras not being there, I actually thought that when we did sing/get behind the team it was actually louder as it seemed collective, but was fairly quiet in between.

Just hope for more of the same against Blackpool Saturday.

Still need to hear from Darryl what's going on.

A very welcome 3 points, important to get them at home too especially after the previous home game.

The back four played slightly further up the field which was good to see. There was more closing down and pressure from the forwards and the midfield. In general an increase in intensity.

Payne is very capable of playing out wide, he may not be quite as affective as in the No10 role but the team must come first. Gino’s work rate was much improved from earlier in the season and his pace frightens the opposition.

I thought Obika had a good game, was a handful. Martin my MOTM had his best game in a yellow shirt. The less about Ricardinho’s red card the better, silly foul.

MK looked pretty ordinary, dodgy at the back, and probably very tired after playing with only 9 men for over half a match just 2 days ago.

Does mean I start the next match day thread? 100% win record after 2 starts!:)

Just bloody refreshing to see 442 at Home, It’s been a while. Hall back in on the left if Payne goes back and I think it could look even better.

Incisive play for the first and third goal...do my eyes deceive me?
Falling asleep at a corner and losing the second ball...my eyes definitely do not deceive me.
Keeper's had a mare with Gino's goal, that's what adrenaline does to you boys and girls.
On the subject of adrenaline, what on earth was Ricky doing. Awful tackle (though the one before that from them was naughty). You know you done f*cked up when the whole ground goes "oooh!" and falls quiet.

Reckless challenge, but from what I can see he hasn't touched the MK player otherwise he would have ended up with a broken leg

Not the best picture but it looks like both feet are off the ground so he's out of control and endangering an opponent. Given nobody complained I think the red was correct.

Unbeaten at home this year, wasn’t sure what position Gino was playing ,seemed like a free range chicken was all over the place, not a lot of tracking back though.

Bit like Danny Hylton. :) Just leave him up top.... Hylton always left my heart in my mouth when he came back to defend but he was fun to watch...

Bit harsh, I thought he closed down lots, hassled and won the ball off people. And at one point, shoulder bardged a player to win the throw in while tracking back by the byline

True but also Thomas' role shouldn't be understated, really good persistent niggly centre forward play

How nice to walk out of the Concrete Wind Tunnel with a smile after 3 points. :)

Positive points:

- The team had organisation and fighting spirit which was missing Vs Wigan.
- Obika was outstanding today and my motm. Thoroughly deserved his goal after leading the line so well.
- Martin was a close 2nd and he read the game so well in open play, anticipating/intercepting passes on numerous occasions.
- It was good to see Carroll demanding the ball from Wes Thomas and running at their full back. He was not alone as the confidence started to come back into the team in that 2nd half.
- Jack Payne looked good playing wide and effected the game more than he has in a while.
- Gino looked a different player and put in a good shift both ways.
- Lego growing in confidence through the game which can only be a good thing. A good 2nd half but his distribution in the 1st half was a bit wayward which means he wasn't motm for me as the sponsors had him.
- Mehmeti looks like he has something about him with the runs he was making. One in particular created loads of space for Payne.
- Simon Eastwood was very solid today.
- The team mixed up the passing with targeted longer balls as well as the short stuff which made it harder for MK Dons to press.
- Getting 3 players or more in the box on occasion for crosses in open play, hasn't happened much in games previously.
- Being able to attack down both wings with the fullbacks made a significant difference in the 2nd half.
- Imo, we game managed at the end effectively considering being down to 10 men.
- Pleased to see Napa come on and having an impact, albeit small one.

Negative points:

- Defending set pieces, both of their players were free of any markers. A familiar story. Do we set up as a zonal system or man marking because from what I see in the East Stand it is a poor mix of both?
- Dongs did get behind the defence on a number of occasions that a better team may have exploited far more. Still a significant improvement on the Wigan game.
- Riccy lost his rag because of a challenge on him immediately prior to his moronic challenge. Definitely a red card.
- Early on, still too many risky passes across the back line.

Still not sure about GVK as a 90 minute player, would prefer him to be used after an hour as an impact sub.

But then again a win is a win and after the Xmas run we had its welcome.

Up the yellows.

Gino put a shift in today. Thomas looked light weight. I agree with an earlier post, start Memeti next game. Maybe Wes needs a rest.

Others here must have picked up on the visible presence of both Faz and Chrissy Allen in the technical area today, both very vocal, as was Clothead. Gave me the impression, along with the program notes from Ol' slippery, that words have been spoken and performance demands made. The team performance, though improved and a win, was not enough to say that we are in the clear. Too many mistakes still and set piece defending still needs work along with off ball movement.
