Transfer News Summer 2023 Transfer Window Thread

I think it perfectly reasonable for the press to ask where a big earner is at the start of the season.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for Manning to not play Murphy if other players are ahead of him in picking order regardless if Murphy is on a big wage. That fault lies with Robinson and the recruitment team last season not Manning or Murphy.

Manning has always stated it will take atleast 3 transfer windows to get a team full of his players.

Manning showed signs of managing Murphy at the backend of last season, there is however no denying, that to this point, it looks like hugely misplaced money.

Assuming we are looking to add another left sided attacker of the Burey/Longman type, that leaves us with Mills, Goodrham, Browne, *possibly another*…Wildschut/Murphy.

Oh, so he's not staying at home or refusing to play? So you made that up! But you're sure that he isn't trusted to play or are you making that up too?

18 players in the matchday squad, only really 2 spots in the starting line up and 2 more off the bench for wingers/wide forwards. Tuesday we started with Browne and Goodrham with Mills and Stevens on the bench, with Stevens giving the additional cover at right/left back. So it's a case of managing the squad appropriately.

Murphy won't get a guaranteed start under Manning, no one will. But I expect him to get plenty of minutes in rotation with others this season, and I think that he can still have a big impact - and there's nothing in the interview with Manning that suggests otherwise.
I just said I didn’t know that and was being presumptive. Why re-write it to look the big man? It’s fine - you’re the big name on campus, I remember.

The boy has the best CV at the club and yet Manning has just confirmed to the public that Mills (out for his first taste of men’s football), Goodrham (circa 40 senior appearances), Browne, Bodin etc are keeping him out the side. However, unlike all of those players, he hasn’t been given a single opportunity when 3 points are at stake - not even injury time. Additionally, his wage eclipses all of those players by a distance.

Murphy should be held to the highest standards of the club. He’s paid at a level that carries a great expectation and you seem to gloss over that. A lack of form is understandable. Injury, if genuinely serious enough that he can’t play, is understandable. But the selective use (and complete exclusion) of him even when fit and looking ‘super sharp in training’ suggests something bigger than that.

I hope you’re right. I did also say maybe Tuesday lit a fire in him - a bit of fomo. But his track record of availability stinks and his new firm but fair manager isn’t falling for it.

Let’s look at the facts with Murphy.

Under Manning, he came back in towards the end of last season, and did well, adding end product to some good performances.

He then featured and did well in some of the pre-season friendlies, so at that point he was fit and willing to play and in some kind of decent form.

He then picks up a knock and isn’t available for selection in the first game of the season. It’s not clear whether that’s a true injury or him not wanting to play, but it’s assumed the former.

He then comes on for a significant period (eg not a desultory 2-3 mins) against Bristol City. I didn’t see it but I didn’t hear that he did much worse than anyone else. At this point Manning is engaged with him enough to have him in the squad and bring him on.

Murphy is then apparently fully fit but not even in the squad for the next two league games. Why? Manning says he’s had multiple conversations with him - is that Murphy asking to play? Stanley Mills hasn’t exactly set the world alight yet and was an unused sub against Derby - if Murphy is fit and willing to play then I can’t see how he doesn’t deserve even a spot on the bench, unless he’s just not bothering in training?

It does all seem a bit odd, and doesn’t smack of great man management by Manning, unless there’s something else going on in the background…

it may be that Manning had no choice but to work with Murphy at the end of last season as the squad was threadbare and we needed everything at our disposal to avoid relegation. He managed to get a response from Murphy and I don't think it's unreasonable to say that a committed Murphy was one of the factors that made the difference.

It may be that he was just doing that to stay up and he never planned to keep working with him, or he has seen something in training that has made him decide not to work with him and he wants to ease him out, or he has an offer elsewhere which Manning would like to encourage him to accept.

But as @IsleofWightYellow says there is nothing to suggest that Murphy isn't committed to the club this season, and I think he would add another excellent option to what we saw against Derby,

Both in the newly acquired Cryogenic chamber recently purchased by the club. Frozen in time until medical advances make it possible for them to actually get fit.

We're aiming for the 2053/54 season, but have to manage expectations.....
They'll only get injured whilst thawing out

I think there's one reason, and one reason only that Murphy is still here - and that's because noone else will take him; he's on a massive wage and hasn't done anything meaningful on a football field on a regular basis for four years now......unless we pay off most of his wages, no other club will be dumb enough.

So there's no way that Manning can get rid of him until next summer; doesn't mean he has to play him much, though, if there are other players in the building that have talent and are doing a better job of buying into his system (and there would seem to be).

We're bound to have an injury crisis on the wings at some point this season, and Murphy may get some game time then. But I'm expecting a very similar season to last year from him......a dozen or so starts, a dozen or so sub appearances, most of them pretty ineffectual but about a game and a half where he's outstandingly the best player on the pitch and has us all dreaming of what might have been (and someone on here will suggest resigning him to howls of derision from everyone sane!)

The whole Murphy situation is becoming a bit of a running joke again. I've heard that he's a thoroughly decent human being, good background etc. But while Tyler Goodrham is starting games of huge magnitude, Murphy, a former Premier League player, stays at home while apparently fit. Manning has no real alternative but to put a positive spin on it but at this point it's hard to see any positives in this and he must be tired of covering it up. He quite clearly isn't mentally invested in playing for us - or playing at all, for that matter. Best thing for everybody, the press included, is to stop talking about him and focus on players who do want to be part of it. After the result we had in the week, it's a shame OM had to go for this story rather than something Manning would like to talk about.
Met him today happy to chat and have photo’s with Mrs Bazzer and grandson and very polite. During training he looked charm certainly packs a shot and a great burst of pace.

Well, quite.

I was addressing folk asking where Murphy is and his current status. As yet, we have little evidence that he can consistently provide in any meaningful way for the money that is being spent on him.

I think it's clear now the recruitment 'team' had little influence over last summer's deals. A lesson for all when you move away from the 'process' and 'structure' in place and the lasting damage that can be created.

With a shortage of new signing stories is it just a case of OM stirring the pot - not to discount having a squad player not in match day plans but there could be all kinds of reasons though as LM has said all have to be ready to take part.
