1. Sustainability
2. Success

In that order, at all times. Otherwise if you fail with one then the other is impossible.
The money we spend this window, will probably be less than what we sell Negru or Tyler for at the end of the season. 500k for Marriott is a lot of money but the likelihood is, we’ll receive 7 figures for one of our players in the summer.

If our starting point was £0 that’d be fine… we’re losing multi-millions a year and dropping half a million on a 28 year old with limited resale value does make me feel a bit uneasy about where we’re headed.

Saying that, it might be that getting a new stadium and combining that with success on the pitch is literally the only sustainable future anyway.

I recall the owners/board saying the progress on the pitch has to align with the progress off the pitch. With League 1 looking fairly weak this season, its the perfect time to back Manning and really go for it (which we have done of course.)

IF we get Marriott, then we would have spent over £1m in fees alone. Add in loan fees, signing on fees, agent costs and wages and we would need to sell Negru or Tyler for a club record fee to recoup the money spent in this window.

I'm fairly relaxed about what we are spending, especially as we've had similar budgets for the last few years and would have spent more last season if a couple of deals had completed. But we have to be realistic about how much a club if our size without our own stadium can spend year on year.

You absolutely cannot budget for hypothetical sales in a year's time to break even

Tyler Smith has only ever hit double figures in league goals once in his career and that was in the national league, and you said he was a good signing… (I actually agree with you that Marriott hasn’t had as much success as people think, I make it three really good seasons and the rest fair, average or poor)
And Tyler Smith was a low-risk, low-cost signing and (at the time) Matty Taylor was still at the club. I stand by it, having watched him play a fair bit it looked like a good addition. We then barely saw him play for a myriad of reasons. I'm not really sure what your point is?

Whilst generally agreeing with your point, it is worth adding that this potential deal is an outlier on our transfer business, we have mostly stuck to the development model. I can accept it being the occasional transfer to complete business, but if this type of move was to become the norm then absolutely agree with the uneasiness.

Anyone else seen the Malaga fans treat random tourists at the airport like a new signing as their club werent signing anyone?
This is awesome

Marriott has also had some serious injuries to contend with. Seems risky. I’d prefer JCH.

Excellent.

Forget any additional forward cover for Browne lads, we've found another 'good lad to have around the place' right under our noses.

Must be worth at least 10 points a season.
He’s probably ‘popular’ because he’s not a threat to their places in the team.

Anyway, I’d play him on Saturday, Charlton is one of the few teams he’s done well against.

Lots of interesting points I think.

1. Marriott objectively (disregarding the fee) is a great signing. He gets goals, he causes havoc, he creates space. We would have an incredible variety of options with him, Gatlin and Harris.

2. 500k is a lot! Credit to the board for going there, if it gets us promotion it's money incredibly well spent.

3. The scenario does put into sharp focus how disjointed our strategy was last year when he was available for half that amount, desperately wanted by Robbo, yet he couldn't bring him in as they had lost faith in him, but wouldn't sack him either. Bizarre.

I was only talking in terms of money spent rather than who we were spending it on.

I think JCH is the better player but Marriott would likely fit into the Manning model better.

I think all the points raised about sustainability and Marriott are entirely accurate but they do sort of miss that the horse has bolted.

According to our latest accounts, we owe our owners £20m. Our last two financial years for which results are available show a cumulative loss of about £8m.

If their money is pulled out, and not replaced, we are already fucked.

Should have pushed to keep that wage cap eh.

You were doing so well.

Untill you had to put up the blah about Robinson.

Can’t posters move on from last season? Please.

Wish Murphy would get his act together. Its disappointing that a player of his quality is not getting game time. Must be hard having a brother in the prem. I would just knuckle down and get on with it but I have never ever been even slightly good at footy.

Surely it's a mental thing with him if he worked hard and shows what he is all about it would be better for him to get a move away the situation now is not favorable for anyone.

Would love to see him perform for us and he must feel better about the team around him this season maybe its already too late for him.

On marriot I think the money is big for him and he wasn't exactly top of the list in goals etc. But he was playing for Fleetwood If manning fancies him then I trust his judgement has not made too many mistakes so far.

This whole actually filling obvious weaknesses in the team thing with quality options is such a change from buying crooked players and has beens I don't know what is going on.!

Never have I seen a fan base be so positive about a player like Ipswich fans have been about leigh.. Usually there are a few fans saying a couple of negatives but nothing.

Great window so far and a striker will be the icing on the cake.
