Transfer News Summer Transfer Preview

What are the current restrictions on squad sizes in L1 and (optimistically) the Championship?

Herbie Kane only 25! He looks much older.
Herbie Kane is absolutely someone we should be going after (within reason/salaries etc). Josh McEachran has showed more recently that someone with a bit of quality in that deeper midfield role helps make us tick. Gut feeling is that he'd come here. Wage may be the issue. If we are in the Championship though...

A lot of recency bias on here re McGuane. JM has had one game all season and people are happy for him to stay. McGuane was our best player for the first few months of the season and people can't wait to drive him out.
Because he himself has gone missing after the first few months. Only he knows why.

Well, MM and JM have had little impact really but MM is out of contract.

It's time we up grade in midfield, Henry ,going Browne going Bodin will free up alot of cash if we end up still in league one. If we are in the championship our million pound loses will be cheap. The likes of Stoke have been bottom half for 3/4 years paying 30 million plus out in wages. We really will need better than Mcguane

Devante Cole ooc as well (I think)
18 goals this season. 2 since the beginning of February! But, that aside I am sure there will be a scramble for him if he doesn't stay at Barnsley.

Herbie Kane? OOC this summer. No way is he sticking around at Barnsley.
Think he would be a great fit for the current system as well. I’d say we loose Tyler in the summer unfortunately so would also make a lot of sense. Devante Cole would be a great signing but I can see a lower championship team taking a chance on him.

You see if he’s free, you watch Mous or Manning snap him up for the championship

Absolutely no chance ,we need a real upgrade in the engine room ,a right back ,2 wingers and another striker .At least

If we do make The Championship 🤞🙄🙏 I wouldn’t be surprised to see some players arriving from Scandinavia and the Continent. There seems to be better value for money in certain countries if the scouting is right, and the best way for Championship teams with smaller budgets to compete.

Do we need another "quarterback" though? We already have one and a half (Brannagan can play that role as well as McEachran).
If such a thing exists, we need a box-to-box enforcer ahead of a Herbie Kane type. I thought Matete would fit that bill....

I agree, we should take up the option if only to get some cash for him. Though I still cling to the hope that we can make him work for us.

Surely no-one is claiming that JM has had a better season overall than Marcus McGuane?!

I agree we need strengthening. But to dismiss McGuane and say we can rely on Goodrham and Rodrigues, is pie in the sky.

Firstly, I'm not saying I would be desperate to keep McEachran. But he is under contract for us next year, so there isn't really a decision to make on JM unless and until another club comes in for him (he's certainly not so bad that we would want to pay him off, the way we did Wildschut last year)

But I reject the notion that it's recency bias with McGuane. He's now played over 150 games over four seasons for us, so we have a very good idea of his pros and cons, his abilities and limitations.

He's been terrific for us in five months out of those four years - the month before he got hurt during his loan spell, and then August/September in both 2022/23 and 2023/24.

And that just isn't enough. Couple that with the fact that he's not a good style fit for Des' system, and I'm moving on and looking for someone more consistent.

Again, not relevant.

Quite apart from the fact that they play different roles - neither Goodrham nor Rodrigues are OOC in the summer. So we don't have decisions to make on either of them (unless someone comes in for them).

We do have a decision to make on McGuane. And we shouldn't be comparing him against other members of our squad. We should be comparing him against the whole pool of CM free agents that we might be able to persuade to come here. And I think many of those other options will be better, or at least more consistent.
