Eastwood was s**t last season. He’s got a fundamental flaw of allowing long range pea rollers and he struggles to get down to shots in the corners. That will not of gone unnoticed by manning. Eastwood isn’t a top 6 keeper & we need one.
FFS this is getting on my tits now.

To say Eastwood was s**t last season, is one of the most shortsighted opinions I've ever seen on this forum.

Last season he had a shambles in front of him, allowing the opposition to create chance after chance, and allowing them all the time and space in the world to pick their spot and shoot from distance, and yes, some goals he conceded he should've done better with, particularly the ones from distance, but the defence should've done better in the build up to these goals being conceded as well.
He can't save everything!

With the shambles of a defence in front of him all season, he kept the score down each game, with some great saves and performances, and was the sole reason we had such a superior goal difference on those around us going into the final few games, and he was one of the main reasons we survived, and deserves a lot of respect and credit for that.

A couple of seasons ago, Easty was struggling, and was rightly dropped and Stevens was promoted to first choice, as Eastwoods replacement, but he wasn't good enough.

We then brought in McGinty, with the intention for him to be Eastwoods longterm replacement, but he's so far shown himself to be not good enough either.

We know Eastwood has his flaws, as every keeper does, and it's pretty much universally agreed that we should be looking to upgrade on Easty, with him becoming a very capable No 2, which I'm sure will happen.

But thank god that we DIDN'T get rid of Eastwood at any point during the last couple of seasons, because his replacements wouldn't have been good enough, and we'd be playing in league two next season if it wasn't for him.

Give the guy a f*****g break!

Who do you think had a better season - Brown or Eastwood?

I have no idea why he would go to Reading at the moment.
Exactly. They can’t spend money on fees, have no manager and are being investigated by the FL, with the prospect of further points deductions,

He was s**t. Statistically he was s**t. If your opinion is contrary to that then fair enough. But he was s**t.

Eh?! Is that the same Brown that was one of the best left backs in the division last season?
He isn’t your type of left back who will get up and down the pitch but then we didn’t play that way last season, we played a more direct style of play which is fine for Brown.

Just because players are suited to a certain style of play it doesn’t make them rubbish.
Having said that, I think Brown could be the next Maldini and fans would still right him off every season.
I agree, Brown is by no means average at this level, and will challenge Thorniley for the LCB position, and will be a very solid squad player option for LB.

But he's more of a Joe Skarz type of LB, solid defensively, but not really offering much going forward, but look how important Skarz was in our promotion season, and there will no doubt be times when we'll set ourselves up in such a way, that Brown will be the correct choice at LB.

But in games where we're looking to play with attacking full backs or wingbacks, then Brown is not the right man for those roles.

The same applies to Long.

But if we're gonna cover all bases, to give us more tactical flexibility, we'll need specialist attacking full backs and wing backs, who are still solid defensively, but who are faster, more mobile and attack minded.

I'm sure Manning is more than aware of the need for us to be more multidimensional than the previous manager was capable of making us, and will recruit accordingly.

Horses for courses and all that...

Normally this thread goes off on weird tangents, we are signing/being linked with so many players that the only slight tangent is how good is Simon Eastwood, barely recognise the place.

They were our two best players, who played the biggest roles in saving us from relegation, but Easty was my POTS, as lets not forget, as well as Brown did, he was a major part of a defence that left Easty so exposed so often, and Easty dug that defence out of trouble on so many occasions with his heroics in goal.

But before anyone decides to jump on me and keep the merry-go-round going, that doesn't mean to say that I don't think we should be looking to upgrade on Easty this summer, because I do, but he did so much better than many are giving him credit for, DESPITE his limitations.

Meh it's just become like a normal club forum. Anyone got any gossip?

He helped to keep us up ,he made a few mistakes it's league 1 but he was OK. Are there better of course there are but it is at least exciting with the names being banded about.
