Away Match Day Thread +++ 23/03/2019 Coventry City v OUFC +++

I can’t belive what Robinson said after the game that he was disappointed with the players the man is deluded and needs to go

We didn't play brilliantly, and could have lost. He is as right to call that as he would be saying how we didn't deserve to lose if we had been in Coventry's shoes.

Grow up and stop looking for reasons to moan.

Except up front in the 'striker' dept of course.

And equally obviously, a large proportion of the squad won't be here next year, so let's hope this summer's recruitment is a quicker and better. But that's a discussion for another day - I'm just enjoying looking at the league table!

Edit - replying to Werthersoriginal's post!

It's amazing how people still find a reason to moan at Robinson. In the last 23 games we've played we have won 8, drawn 8, lost 7. If we had mirrored that then we would be finishing in the top half of the table. Robinson should probably get more credit than he does. He lost 7 out of the first 10 games. Most managers would start losing their heads and wouldn't be able to rectify the issues. I'd say Robinson has managed to do that quite well.

This season hasn't be a successful one but it has been a steep learning curve for both managerment and owner which will hopefully help do things the right way next season.

The defence has definitely improved. We were shipping goals for fun at the start of the season. I think we have the nucleus of a decent side now and if we hadn't had that disastrous start we would have been comfortably top half, maybe even looking at Play-offs.

Let's just make sure we stay up for now but hopefully if we do then lessons have been learned from last summer and we can push on next season.

>Foley - "So we have managed to win 11 games since the first win v Plymouth which was 13th league game of the season"

Yes 5 from 33 possible in first 11 games was pretty poor ..obviously relegation form. Yes 11 wins now so far but the first one was 25th August (League One game 5). We beat Burton 3-1 at home didn't we?. The away point at Southend on 6th October appears to be the turning point. Pity about the 3 straight losses at Christmas/NY blip or we'd be very nearly safe by now.

What a win for us! Well done United..................and, reluctantly I say (this is to you, Mrs) Robinson!
I think we have to say goodbye to bird-beak Obika and, sad to say, Rob Hall. Bird-beak is toothless and Robbie is injury prone (don't forget he was knackered when we got him). We can't live on sentimentality though. Baptiste will come again (no bonking jokes please). He was bloody good, wasn't he? Whatever happens; if a no-body fan like me can see that we need a big, strong and above all else, proven goalscorer or two, then why can't Robbo? Surely there's money around to get us someone? Get Jonty Smith on a permanent basis, please.
Robinson Crusoe had better start good next season, otherwise I'm going to have major heart palpitations! And Tiger Lily? Er, I don't know what to say about him! Just get rid of that bloody bow tie, please! Do you know why they are called Dicky bow ties? 'Cos they're wrapped round dicks!

Is that right? A large proportion of the squad went be here next season?
Looking at the starting 11 yestetday:
Nelson, Browne and Garbutt will go
Graham and Kashi? Who knows
The other 6 will presumably stay
The bench?
Stevens, Mousinho, Sykes, Henry and Hanson will presumably stay
Sinclair will probably go
Others?
Carruthers will presumably go but
Whyte, Baptiste, will stay.

So the majority if the squad I reckon will probably stay.

He’s had a top eighth budget so I expected better, the squad on paper looks good now with Long,Ruffels and Baptiste having stepped up to the mark, some of the players bought in the close season just have not yet made a good enough claim to fill the position they were brought here to do, the forward line still not sorted out, hopefully if we stay up this wil be a top priority for whoever is in charge. I’m not a big fan of game management, towards the end of the game yesterday and on previous occasions it was embarrassing,we’re just not very good at it.

We played far better in the away draws/loss at Sunderland, Wycombe and Wimbledon than we did in the victories at Blackpool and Coventry. Just shows how luck tends to even out over a full season so you end up where you deserve to be. Hopefully that means a top half finish.

I think Nelson, Browne, Garbutt, Graham, Sinclair and Carruthers will go - which includes IMO a pretty large proportion of the senior players (maybe not of the squad, you are right). We won't re-sign Obika or Shearer and I am guessing that Hall's career with us is in the balance. I am also not that convinced that we won't sell one or two of our younger 'assets' to pay for incoming players.

Which will leave us (if we don't sell any) with:

GK - Eastwood, Stevens (that's fine IMO)
Central defenders - Dickie (! - a few more bodies needed there!)
Left back - Ruffels (if he is to continue there - cover needed at the very least)
Right back - Long and Hanson (again if he now a defender) (not convinced that we don't need someone else there as well/instead)
DM - Mousinho, Kashi (if we sign him) That's OK, with a youngster as an understudy - if that is to be Hansen, we need another right back.
AM - Sykes, Brannagan, Baptiste, Henry (thats fine - maybe an embarrassment of riches? This is where I think we might sell.)
Wide right - Whyte
Wide left - ?
Striker - Mackie (!!!)

I haven't included the like of Spasov, Lopes, Jones, Jonte Smith etc - they may or may not be able to step up to be first team regulars. We look perilously light in central defence, out wide and up front.

Wrong thread (and possibly too early) for this discussion though....

I thought that the game management yesterday was very good.
After we scored Coventry created nothing.
As a number have said, it could have been a nervous last 15 minutes but it wasn't due to our game management and pressing being so good.

All in favour of the pressing, just not the kicking into the corner and losing the ball which then you invite more pressure on yourself and overplaying in the wrong areas of the pitch.

Eastwood had no saves to make after we scored.
We looked pretty much in control.

The official crowd was 14,000. That is even beating MK standards. Surely there were only about 6,000 Coventry fans, 2,000 of us, so I would say in attendance was about 8,000. So it means 6,000 season ticket holders didn't turn up?

Ok guys let’s not get ahead of ourselves we may have beaten Coventry but our game against Wycombe next Saturday will define us

I've watched the goal a number of times now, as you do, still can't convince myself the ball was in the quadrant for the corner though, not that it matters ? some of the Cov fans were going nuts ?
