Who’s panicking?
I am, a bit!

The transfer window may still be open but the season has started - 6 league games and a league cup game (plus some other nonsense) until the end of the month. Saturday's team was basically last season's team with Findlay for McNally and two of the regular non-starters from last time out (Seddon and Henry).

This isn't necessarily an informed criticism of what the club has been trying to do (and of course they were unlucky with the Wildschut injury) - only a view based on what we actually saw on Saturday. Light up front and in the full back department, plus if Gorrin isn't fit (and he looked like he was miles off) and Smyth isn't going to play there we still need more defensive midfield.

So I am rather panicking that we have replaced some of the leavers - McNally > Findlay, Sykes > Murphy, Holland > Wildschut, Kane > Smyth (??), some of whom may or may not be better than those they replaced, we will see - but not *yet* strengthened in several core areas that were obviously lacking by the end of last season.

All fair points, I don’t think anyone could argue that this has been an ideal transfer window and that we need to learn some lessons for next summer.

We will make late signings that strengthen both the first 11 and squad, but I feel we will have a bad start and be playing catch-up, and the question is whether we be good enough to catch up anyway.

We have our back up defenders, we're trying to do the harder thing which is signing first choice fullbacks.
Yes fair point, but not every signing has to be the ultimate world beater. A solid mobile left back who doesn't go on constant walkabout would make us so much stronger.

I see that Jordon Bowrey played LWB for Mansfield on Saturday. We could kill two birds with one signing.8D159C11-C985-4CCA-95C4-9081D6C0587B.jpeg

They lost 2-0! A great example then of why you don’t play players in positions they are unaccustomed to and not their natural position!

Sign players for the position they specialise in, and actually play them there!

He got their highest match rating on Fotmob! 7.7 :censored:

Many players can play in a number of positions.
Some can become much better players changing position ( for Oxford, Trevor Hebberd joined as a striker and became a great midfield player. Joey started on the left and as we also had Chris Allen he became a great right winger)
I think it is far greyer than suggesting that all players are specialist in only one position and should never be allowed to play in any other position

Mansfield losing 2 0 is an example of why Bowery shouldn't play on the left?
Did he have a particularly poor game?

Yeah, for 3 seasons!

Oh, and we’re supposed to have learnt after the play off semi final defeat to Blackpool!
Is that fair to say though?

Ruffels left us for a Championship side who had moments but overall a very good player for us. He was promptly replaced by Seddon who, by all accounts, was a good signing. Up until January he did very little wrong and for whatever reason he struggled after that so that’s only 6 months really that we’ve felt the need to improve there.

18 months ago, Long was arguably one of the best right backs in the division. I certainly wasn’t wanting him replaced so not quite sure what you mean by lacking for 3 years. We only have one RB so we do need another one. But on Saturday Long was absolutely solid. Did Barkhuizen do anything notable? He’s nothing special going forward but that’s not the priority.

We've also brought in 2 first-team ready CBs this year.

We lack in depth which needs addressing but to imply we’ve neglected the defensive positions for 3 years is an over exaggeration.

I do agree completely with you there, it’s more the point when signing experienced players let’s say, that they are in the main played in the role and position that they are signed for.

I have to say I don’t recall TH being signed as a forward, as I always remember him as an attacking midfielder for us. Joey and Chris Allen were young home grown talents who when in their teens could more easily adapt to changing positions.

Yes players obviously have to adapt when then are injuries and suspensions etc… I was really just trying to emphasise the point that we should be looking to sign specialist players as our main source of remaining transfer business. Obviously a utility player like Forde can be a useful asset as back up, especially when the squad is wafer thin or money is tight, and there isn’t the resource to necessarily fund what’s needed.

Have we not been saying that over the last 3 seasons?

Really? I don't think many people are disappointed with the quality of player coming in (although there are certainly question marks over a few of them regarding injury/attitude) but we've started the season with a half baked squad that hasn't addressed most the big issues from last season. The state of the subs bench on Saturday showed we weren't nearly fully prepared. I've nothing against getting good quality players later in the window but there seems to be a strange narrative that they are only available then and if you want quality you have to wait until the season is a few weeks old.

We've started the season (again) with a thin, lopsided squad, more injury risks than we should have and deficiencies in the starting 11. In such a strong league we're giving away an advantage to other teams. Fortunately the fixtures are now relatively kind for a month or so so even without immediate additions we should be able to get through but if we had been given Sheffield Wednesday's start for example then we'd likely be well behind the pack by the time the window closed. The fact that this is the same every window is certainly a cause for concern and the dismissal of people bringing this up as "whingers" isn't particularly helpful.
Agree on the whole but if we get 2 or 3 more injuries I'm not so sure about 'getting through'
