Away Match Day Thread +++ 07/08/2021 L1 Cambridge United v OUFC +++

I often dream about the game the night before and I’m going to try and start recording them on here (you’re not going to like this one, but I don’t think they often come true!)

I dreamt that I managed to find a dodgy stream of the game, which had terrible quality, and I proceeded to watch us go 1-0 down. I gave up watching at around 30 mins in and came back on 90 mins to see that we were 3-0 down, and then as I came back Thorniley gave away the ball at the back to make it 4-0.

I’m definitely not Nostradamus though so this will not happen!

If these are the kind of prematch dreams you're gonna be having, then keep them to yourself please! :ROFLMAO:

Come on Oxford! Let’s get the season off to a good start.
First game away from home I’d take the draw, but have a feeling we can do better.
My prediction is there will be goals at both ends.

Very disappointed I won't be able to make this. First away day in months, and in a lovely city for a day. Enjoy those of you with tickets, make an absolute ruckus in that away end.

Gonna go against the grain and say I think a result is more important than the performance. I don't really subscribe to the idea that we actually started that badly last year, and that it hamstrung us for the season, but I agree with the general sentiment that, if we're going to challenge this year, we need to start strongly and be winning these kinds of games. We've got a really tough opening few fixtures - Charlton, Bolton, Lincoln and Wycombe all by 11 September, with Wednesday and Sunderland not long after. I said in another thread, but I think that if we get to the final whistle at the Stadium of Light in the playoff places, we could be looking at a very successful season ahead. And we'll only get there by picking up maximum points against the likes, with respect, of Cambridge. The performances will come as the players 'gel', I'm not worried about that. We know they have the quality to tear apart this league, they just need to get used to each other. Until they do, I just want to see us picking up the points that keep us within touching distance of the top of the pile.

That said... I've got a feeling this will be 1-1. They'll be hugely up for it, their first game in the third tier for two decades (I think), in front of a home crowd who have a year's worth of promotion joy bottled up, while we seem to have been a little disrupted with COVID cases and niggly injuries in this back end of pre-season. Hoping for a Matty Taylor goal to get him off the mark nice and early.

Can't believe I'm leaving Henry out, but I don't want to see Brannagan playing DM, he needs to influence the game higher up the pitch, and McGuane simply has to be given the chance to pick up where he left off before his injury last season, and Whyte has to start on the RW.

Bodin, if fit and match sharp, is surely the choice on the left of a front three, just hope to god he can put his injury issues behind him, and hit the ground running for us this season, if so, we've got an excellent player in that position.

So many options, it's really difficult to pick a side, and leave certain players out, and that bench is scary!

But it's a long season, and everyone is gonna get their chances to play their part, and for the first time ever, I think whichever lineup Robbo chooses, I'll be happy!

So excited, I'm buzzing!

COME ON YOU YELLOWS!!!

The early games are never an exact science - there will be nerves, rustiness and a big crowd which will have a few on edge. I think (hope) we’ll have too much for them. I fancy Moore for an early goal from a corner and Whyte to finish it off in the last 15 on the counter. 2-0.

Hope KR opts for a little more experience today for those reasons but I honestly think whatever team he puts out, I’ll love it because football is BACK!

My first game back is the home game next week but behind the boys all the way and will follow it on about 5 different devices so I have all bases covered!

Safe travels to those on their way up! COYY!!!

I think Bodin is going to be the unexpected hero of this season for us. He's probably been the signing that was met with the least fanfare but if, as you say, he hits the ground running, he's such a good option for this league. Probably starts at LW over Holland in a strongest starting XI at this point for me.

I'm pretty excited about this one. I know it's not a derby, but at least it's got a bit of spice added to it considering the historical rivalry between us. I think we've just got to keep our heads and play our game. Come on Oxford!

Sure this wasn't a dream about an away game at Cambridge a few years ago....on TV .....nightmare that was

Exactly this. While not in brilliant form at the beginning of last season and definitely deserving of a few of the defeats we also had games where we could of come away with more points so we were wasteful early on and that very nearly cost us a play off place. The first game of the season is never going to be a slick affair so you need to show a bit of metal and grind it out, players get tired a bit earlier, passes go astray a bit more often but it’s the same for both teams. A good test of character but you have a feeling that a positive result today could set up a good season.

Inclined to agree, I think both will have a huge part to play as Bodin will inevitably struggle to play 90 mins twice a week in the core part of the season. Holland is potentially that next £1-2m player for us if he can stay fit and it clicks for him. Whoever starts will leave a brilliant option on the bench for us.

We really do have an embarrassment of riches up top and in the middle. Our season will make or break on our ability to defend because we will always have the goals to go in front or confidently chase from 1 or 2 goals behind.

Actually excited for team selection, been a long time since we had so many attacking options that we could have two different attacking front fives with subs as well. Actually don’t think we have ever had these numbers.

Working today, but I'll be following closely. Hoping for a good start to the season. COYY!
