Home Match Day Thread 12/02/2022 L1: OUFC v Bolton Wanderers

You say that but I’ve watched almost every game this season and I can promise you that over the last say ten games Moore and McNally have been decent; they’ve not played badly at all. It’s just that Seddon has been awful and Long has been average to poor, added to the fact that Kane isn’t offering much protection in front of them. It’s not the centre backs fault.
Then you clearly know nothing about football. I have watched every single minute of every single league game this season. Do me a favour, tally up the amount of unforced errors between McNally and Moore in the past 10 games. If you know what you are looking for and understand the game you will see what I mean.

Kane, Brannagan, Mcguane, Bodin, Browne, Sykes, Henry.

All of our players who can play centrally, all fantastic ball players, not one defensive midfielder among them. Not one who can break up play, tackle and protect our back 4.

The only natural defensive midfielders we have are Gorrin, out for the season, and Hanson, the less said the better.

I honestly cannot fathom how those in charge have looked at those name and thought we can do without one.

Just got in to my car, and will be sat here a while, in this bottle neck of a car park, what a shithole.

Anyway as a neutral brillIant game of football, and some good goals in there too.

Before rambling on well done to Bolton Wanderers, for never giving up, and kept attacking when they could. They thoroughly deserved there win today, and wish there fans a safe journey home.

From an OUFC perspective the result is terrible, these are the games we need to win if we have any hope of a top six finish. Yes Bolton are in good form, but so are we at home! No knee jerk reaction here, just saying how it is! There glaringly obvious is the defence. We haven’t addressed it in January, and it’s going to come back and bite us on the backside I’m afraid. Yes we are in the top six currently, but honestly - if we continue to ship 2/3 goals per game we are not going to finish there. 9th or 10th at this rate!

If we fail to finish in the top six, then this season imo has been a failure. We are in a bad place at the moment with two defeats on the trot, and whilst winning is a habit, so to is losing.

A long way to go still, but with others above dropping points today, it really feels like an opportunity has been badly missed to stabilise ourselves in them playoff positions.

KR sort it out!

No. I just think you expect league one footballers to perform at the level you see on the telly. One of those central defenders hasn’t even got through a season yet and you want flawless performances consistently? That’s a lack of football knowledge. They’ll make mistakes every week at this level, it’s just whether we can recover in the right way that means we don’t concede. At the moment we’re not doing that but sometimes you have to applaud the opponent for taking their chances and Bolton are in incredible form so I would expect them to do that right now. That’s not to say we can be excused from anything, but to me it sounds as though your expectations need adjusting.

No. I expect league one defenders at the top of league one to not concede 2/3 goals a game. Regardless of this game, what about last week? Or the week before? How about the week before that? We are leaking goals and the majority are because of the middle of the park. Yes we have no Gorrin but the closing down, tackles and one on one situations have all been very, very poor from our back 2/3/4. Have a look....

Why not share your undoubted football intelligence, tell us what you are seeing? I actually agree they haven't been perfect, however, you say unforced errors but the pressure on our CBs is huge with limited protection in front of them and with massive gaps on each flank.

9th or 10 th is where we will finish we are a soft team definitely not strong enough as a unit alot of good players but the big teams are getting going but still a good season . But you need a defence and a strong CDM and we are being sussed out lose at Charlton which I expect and we will find it a tough end to the season. Karl has sadly got the January window wrong

Always such a low blow and a cheap dig, no need for it.

Whilst we're at it, can you tally up the amount of times we've conceded a goal from just outside of box? Something having a natural defensive midfielder shielding the back 4 can help prevent.

The clowns are out on Radio Oxford tonight. The team need to defend better front to back out of possession. We concede far too many shots and goals. You could have Edison in goal and we would still concede.

We are going to need to recruit better to be in with a shout of promotion next season thats for sure.

Shipping far too many goals.

I think KR gets off lightly sometimes. I'll never believe he's a good manager tactically.

Ha! Yes of course, sorry. Blocking shots from outside the box is no job for a CB. Jhezzzzzzzz come on!!!!!!!! Are we going to keep blaming poor performances on missing Gorrin? Or are we actually going to address the issues that we have on the pitch?!?!

I believe he’s good. Just not excellent and we need someone exceptional to get us promoted in a competitive league. ‘Good’ gets you into the top half and into the playoffs, tops. ‘Excellent’ gets you autos.

He’s had a pretty much unbroken spell of management roles since 2010. Five playoffs campaigns shows he’s good. One promotion shows he’s not excellent.

The worry is that he constantly tries to do things perfectly that he misses the essentials. We can play some stunning stuff at times and blitz teams when we’re in the mood but equally overlook the defence and any defensive minded midfielder options in January.

I like the bloke but it’s day like this that I question whether he has it in him to get us promoted.

With being able to leave Holland out the squad, and having Browne and Henry to return to fitness (so 2 more from today drop out?), this shows what an absolute embarrassment of riches we have in an attacking sense.

By contrast the lack of options defensively is just an embarrassment.
Something that people see to be ignoring! Our starting back 4 is not 'top league one' level and our back ups are non existent.

Wow. It's not just about centre-halves blocking shots, in the same way it's not always the keepers fault when a goal is conceded. If you give an opposition player the time and space on the edge, they can pick out a corner that the GK can't reach and the CBs can't block. The objective is to stop the shot in the first place, but when you have no midfielders tracking the runner or being inside the D, then there's a problem.

All of the best sides play with a natural holding player and we don't. This isn't just a Gorrin problem, as many posters have commented on our lack of a defensive midfield signing in the January window. We need someone in the squad to do that. Or do you honestly think a Kane-Brannagan partnership is defensively strong enough for us to challenge for promotion?
