Away Match Day Thread 05/04/22 L1: Morecambe v OUFC

An infuriating result which doesn't end our play-off push, but certainly makes it all but impossible. Sunderland is a bigger must-win than it already was.

I don't think it's a surprise that another Karl Robinson side bottles it under a little bit of pressure. We did it against Wycombe, we did against Blackpool and we did it against League Two Tranmere in the EFL Trophy semi. We just don't have enough steel about us, and lacked leadership on the field. This hasn't ever been addressed.

And again, our squad building and Karl playing square pegs in round holes costs us again. We had a back four made up of a winger playing right back, a right back playing centre half, a young centre half in his first pro season, and a centre back at left back. If we actually had more than two full backs in our squad, this game of merry-go-round can easily be avoided. And that's before we get onto Kane - a playmaker - playing as a holding midfielder for christ's sake.

Repeated basic mistakes are costing us promotion to the Championship, and with the ambitious ownership, they could end up costing Karl Robinson his job.

There should be no excuses tonight, we were not good enough to win. Who cares if we had more shots etc, we couldn’t take our chances & Morecambe could. I do think more questions should be asked of Robbo, an unwillingness to address the very obvious defensive issues in our squad has ultimately cost us this season. 1 injury to any of our defenders and we are down to bare bones and players in positions they are not natural in.

Not much more we could have done to win that.

Only real criticisms could be:

Herbie Kane - didn’t play well at all. If Brannagan is back on Saturday it should be Kane who’s dropped, not McGuane - but doubt that will happen.

Gavin Whyte - his finishing and final ball were poor once again.

Karl Robinson: Don’t think he got the subs right.

There is more to football than scoring goals, you need to stop conceding them as well. We can't defend properly.

At the start of the season, I thought to myself this has to be make or break for Robbo.

He is a great manager, don't get me wrong, but will he be the OUFC nearly man?
KR has only ever been a nearly man surely? He has proven that time and time again. Nice bloke and all that, but at least he is consistent with the various things that will always make him only a nearly man, and nothing more.

No, not really the wrong thread. Too many on here (hello Scotchers) thought everything we were doing was flawless - get a successful team first - and we are miles away from that at present - then check out the guys who are (allegedly) "investing" in OUFC - where are they by the way?

How come every team we play against their goalie has a worldly game, how come our keepers (both) can’t save s**t?!!

Same old same old….

s**t day at the office .... what is it with wet night games in the north west ?

MM and Holland both had decent games while they were on the field

Looks like the Robinson the "Nearly but not quite man" has struck again. Still theoretically possible. But not too likely. The last six games are won two, drawn one, and lost three. Mid table at best and certainly no promotion form. The loss of form and loss of key players added to the poor recruitment in January have finally come to roost with United.

The subs that didn't come on tonight says a lot about our current situation:

Sub GK
35 (almost 36) year old defender who is basically making up numbers
Our previously first choice left-back
A right winger at a previous club who we've turned into anything but, and who keeps not getting on the pitch but has had contract extended for next season.
