At what point do we hang a banner on the fence at the training ground saying "Sign a defensive midfielder".

Buckinghams comments of "we have plenty of numbers there" really worries me.

If we don't sign one then we'll finish mid table, it's really as simple as that for me.

How none of them can see it is so incompetent.

spot on. Him classifying mceachran as one when he’s soft as s**t and never puts his foot in at all would be a worry for me. Need a proper hard b****** who will sit behind mcguane and Brannagan and give them licence. Might even make mceachran look better being higher up the pitch

I still find it strange how many people on here seem to think we are the only club who are still short in this window. How come over 100 deals always go through on the last day then?
I would suggest most clubs who know exactly what they want get their transfer deals done quickly.
Eg In the summer under Manning
Rodrigues, Mc Ceacran, Beadle, Harris, Thornilley all done early
Mills and Stevens were not late in the window
Leigh later in window and Edwards close to deadline.Edwards is the sort of player that is a bonus on deadline day.
The elusive striker didn’t materialise and we were kept waiting and lost out somewhere along the line.
So 7/10 window

Under Buckingham he has moved quickly for Cumming and Burey and out of necessity due to injuries/ loan return
Goodwin comes in mid window.Good signing but as he’s injured doesn’t help us in a run of games we needed to do well in.
However we are still 2/3 short and will have to wait until deadline day which is not encouraging because they have missed a lot of games in January.
Still waiting to see the players we get but so far this is a 3/10 window.

Which still beats KR’s 0/10 last window

Point is a good manager knows the players they want and gets it done quickly but even then you have to wait sometimes.

McEachran is very good at what he does well, for about 60 minutes... and when it's in games against opponents that we'll get time on the ball against, and when he's got some pace in front of him moving around so he has something to aim for. So really, not much use for us over the course of this season.

Smyth has been here for 2 years and barely had a look in. Unfortunately for him most of that time was under Robinson who clearly had an issue with him. But it looks like he can play a bit and he's happy to stick it about as well. It's hard to see why he hasn't had more of a run in defensive midfield since Robinson got binned.

I agree we need someone in there to shove some people about. It was one of Robinson's great failings in squad building and it'd be nice if we could fix it sooner rather than later. The obvious shorter term solution is Smyth, but the fact that Buckingham hasn't played him there makes me feel as if it's not a role he wants, although it feels like it should be.

January is totally different to the summer though?

A player might wish to chose Pompey over us for a number of reasons, not least they're currently top of the league and attract much bigger attendances. It might hurt to think that's possible but it could be true.

I agree, we need another striker in urgently, I was just wondering why you mentioned the deal as on the face of it, it appears to be a good piece of business. As you rightly pointed out, the need for another striker is something which should have been remedied and hopefully is going to happen.
Tbh I think it’s going to be a case of not going to happen. Sadly I think this is hong to be it for this window or it will be a couple of loans that no one has ever heard of and will only bench warm.

But if we get another striker in before the window closes, which is the plan, then it'll only be another 2 games with just Harris. We've invested a lot of money in Goodwin, why would it matter than he spends the first couple of weeks out.

If we get to Friday and we haven't signed another front man, that's the time to get annoyed.
You should be annoyed now it’s been a crap January transfer it’s all been Robinesque this window a load of bollox

If that what he wants then he can do that with the players available
Potentially could now but the winger options don’t really support what he wants, hence why we saw him back Murphy so heavily.

Goodhram isn’t a fast direct winger, he’s more technical and plays inside… he has Burey now, but will need another to work it properly and most effectively

He needs at least three wingers to play his way I guess, one always gets tired (or injured) during the second half.

Agree that little Tyler isn't really a classic winger, he's not that fast and always cuts in. He tends to play more of a free role, I guess he could end up as attacking midfield.

Bolton preparing a bid for Brizzle Rovers’ Aaron Collins - league one player of the season last year, loads of goals & assists but form dropped a little this year. Was left out of their squad on Saturday pending a transfer I guess. Having coached him as a kid, and followed his progress I know he’s a good lad and trains well, plays best as one of a front two. Wonder if we could gazump Bolton?

Completely agree,

I think Burey, a new signing, Murphy when back will suit him more and even Edwards towards the back end… Tyler will have a big part to play still, as when the games are played in tighter spaces he’s perfect for that
