Home Match Day Thread 12/02/2022 L1: OUFC v Bolton Wanderers

12 goals conceded in the 6 games Stevens has been playing this has to be addressed

Not going anywhere when we concede 2 or 3 every game.

Evatt a better manager than KR.

Seddon not good enough. McGuane absent.

Maybe this season is more about approval for Brake. We would need to improve a lot to go up.

The recruitment team have undone our season. We're in a league full of big fish who all had the funding to recruit what they needed in January.

Our owners put the money there to spend, and we left everything till deadline day, then didn't recruit the positions we actually needed.

Our squad was crying out for a better left back and defensive midfielder and we got neither. Cardiff fans will tell your Brown is not a left back before we say he's the backup we needed.

We were firmly cemented in the playoffs and recruited for the long term instead of the short term. Okay if that's what we wanted to do but that's probably undone or certainly weakened our playoff chances.

We could literally have Messi and Ronaldo playing up top and we would still lose 8-7. Our back 4 is absolutely dreadful! it has not been addressed in the transfer window and we will finish outside the playoffs. I have been a Robinson fan since he has arrived but he has got this window wrong. Our starting back 4 are simply not good enough!

Player ratings:

Stevens: 6 - One good save that I can remember. Some dodgy kicking. Couldn’t really do anything about any of the goals.

Long: 5.5 - Didn’t play badly, but didn’t really look great. I think the last few times when I’ve seen him as a centre back in a three he’s looked better than at right back.

Moore: 6 - No major mistakes, solid enough

McNally: 7 - He plays better than Moore most games now. Tall, strong, quick, wins headers.

Seddon: 4.5 - Better than recent games (which isn’t saying much, he’s been terrible at times) but still gave the ball away a lot, hit simple passes and balls forward straight out of play a few times and once again caught in no man’s land for the winner. His defensive positioning is absolutely atrocious at the moment.

Kane: 4.5 - Looks tired, weak, and out of form. Some good passes as always but isn’t really the defensive midfielder we need against good teams - if we’re bossing the game, sure, but he’s not a destroyer against a decent side. I can see why he didn’t make it in the Championship.

Brannagan: 6 - Not his usual barnstorming self, but he did pretty well

Bodin: 7.5 - Lit up the game with moments of real quality. Faded, as he always does.

Whyte: 7 - Looked sharp on his return to the side until he understandably tired. Seems to have some pace and confidence back.

Sykes: 6 - Worked hard without every really doing an awful lot. I think right wing is his best position currently, and if he’s not there then he doesn’t seem as effective

Taylor: 5 - Worked hard but, once again, what did he do of note?

They're being exposed because there is no one protecting in front of them as Gorrin did! They are good players but it's not working as the way we play teams are running through us and the midfield has no real tacklers in there, Kane and CB are great players but there is a soft underbelly. And KR has to take responsibility. McGuane is offering very little, and even if Browne gets fit we still need to stop the other team scoring! And KR sets the team up to attack but he has forgotten to instruct them to defend!

Why does the manager insist on playing our best player in the wrong poaition?

Sykes should always be on the right. He just doesn’t contribute in the same way when played on the left.

Madness.

Maybe changing to playing three CBs would be the solution?

Long, Moore and McNally. Use Seddon and Williams as wing-backs
Nice idea but KR doesn't know his best formation or players....and there is only 14 games left now, we're out of the play offs and teams are catching us and have games in hand. Going to be a fight to stay in the play offs now I fear.

You say that but I’ve watched almost every game this season and I can promise you that over the last say ten games Moore and McNally have been decent; they’ve not played badly at all. It’s just that Seddon has been awful and Long has been average to poor, added to the fact that Kane isn’t offering much protection in front of them. It’s not the centre backs fault.

Agree that they are missing protection in front of them but................ they are not good players. McNally has potential yes but the mistakes that the back 4 are making is frightening. McGuane has actually done ok. People are blinded and seem to think he is terrible but our defence are great apart from they are not being protected. Regardless of whether we are missing a defensive midfielder, seddon is absolute garbage (prove me wrong) and Moore is the most overrated player in the squad.
