Home Match Day Thread 26/02/2022 L1: OUFC v Cambridge United

Putting Smiths dimness to one side, I thought he was one of the most threatening strikers we’ve faced this season. Unrecognisable from the immobile, heavy touch, non scoring player we had. I was edgy every time the ball was played towards him.

Agree. Jack should of saved the second though as he got a hand to it. Cambridge looked a very dangerous team going forward and its not surprising they beat Plymouth last week.

What were the comments?

Struggling to recall the specifics (sorry, was getting a bit emotionally drained by 2pm today!) but he said they had news and that they’d reveal more in the near future.

Got the sense that he didn’t want to talk about it today, so as to not distract from the day and put a cloud on things.

Entirely possible that I misheard or misinterpreted his comments though!

Well played Wellers. You did great out there

What a top bloke - definitely a name to watch

Not only spoke well but it was refreshing to see an opposing manager actually managing and not continually berating the fourth official or time wasting from the moment they scored. I see he’s recently been given a new 3 year deal and if he gets a bit of financial support I can see Cambridge establishing themselves in L1 and - much like we are doing - giving some much bigger clubs a run for their money.

Randoms:

Emotional day. Club did welll; could have easily become mawkish and over sentimental.

Team and fans seemed to be stunned for first half hour; we showed a lot of quality eventually.

I hope Moore comes back soon. Without him we look very very fragile at the back.

Cambridge, in the main were a class act. They have an impressive manager. What a tough division L1 is.

Williams is best right back at the club; an inspired signing.

Brannagan showed great technique in keeping his head over the ball for his finishes.

The third goal was delightful.

Stevens a real curate’s egg performance. Dreadful keeping for their second; but some high quality Ederson style kicking.

We look a fit side in last 15 minutes of games. Far fitter than last season; could be the difference ultimately.

As always….COYY

If truth be told, we have looked just as fragile when he has been in the back four.

Just seen the goals on Quest and noted all the presenters (even the Scummer) were wearing Oxford badges. Fair play.

Who was the Scummer? I can only think of Colin Murray, Dean Ashton and Oxford fan George Elek.

One of those days when Moore‘s stock has risen by sitting in the stand. McNally got better as the game went on, as did Long, but the commanding presence of Moore was missed. Tempo was much too slow from the off and didn’t really pick up until the last few minutes when we were cruising and could relax. A strange atmosphere seemed in the air too, it felt like fans and players alike were caught up in the pre match emotion and the day job of putting on a performance and getting three points. The performance felt lukewarm throughout, albeit in difficult circumstances.

A great week for the club though in our quest for promotion and with all that’s gone on and hats off to the players for grinding out two of the three victories. Maybe a couple of changes at Pompey just to keep us fresh and energised but in the main the basis of the team that’s picked up these three wins on the bounce.

It's kind of funny how we can form lifelong opinions and perceptions (positive and negative) of entire opposition fanbases from mere moments.

So today when Joey's brave young girls were leading the procession laying the wreaths in memory of their dad behind the goal, and tears were forming in my eyes, it was lovely and heart-warming to look up and see the Cambridge United fans to a man standing up and applauding as loud as they could. The same again for the official minute's applause before kick off. Today is a memory that any of us that were there will carry forever, and I shall always have the utmost respect and admiration for Cambridge for today. Their fans were exceptional.

It was also refreshing to hear their manager's classy interview after the game. None of the usual clichés trotted out, just a decent and honest assessment from a good man with a lot of integrity who clearly cares about his football club. Considering this is their first time at this level after 20 years and they lost the guy who scored a bucketful more than anyone else in League 2 last season, he's done a terrific job. They are in safe hands - a very decent side and I think should be established in this league for years to come.

As for Oxford, what can I say? Last 4 home games: 3-2, 3-2, 2-3, 4-2.
