Away Match Day Thread 01/03/22 L1: Portsmouth v OUFC

when we play with 2 wing backs, Williams and Seddon and 2 in midfield, Brannagan and Kane and 3 of those players basically charge forward leaving Kane on his own in midfield we then cant defend that space.

Hmm. Letting off flares and chanting 'You Black B*****d' at the ref. No wonder the Pompey fans sang 'You're an embarrassment'. Not our finest hour.
Not sure where you heard that, certainly not something we heard. Pompey fans were singing "You fat bastard" at one of ours but heard no racist chanting from our lot.

That chant is quite something if true, sorry for asking but we’re you there and was it definitely those words?

How did Pompey fans hear this when no one else did who was in the stand? Have asked mates who were there and they heard nothing of the sort

A disappointing night.

Stevens conceded another goal across him tonight. It’s a common theme.

We conceded another goal from that 18-22yard range tonight. It’s a common theme.

We conceded another 2/3 tonight. It’s a common theme.

Seddon had another poor game tonight. He lacked decisiveness in defence and offered a couple of dreadful balls when I’m attacking areas. It’s a common theme.

Based on our current goals against trend for the season we will concede 60+ goals. When was the last time a team won promotion conceding so many goals?

Ref - fussy
Away fans - quiet second half

A number of comments heard that concur with the opinion that Stevens is looking poor at times.
We thought Seddon and Kane were also below standards required.

Ffs!

If this is true, I’m appalled.

That’s really gonna help with our new stadium plans ennit.

Disgusting Neanderthals, who do not represent Oxford United.

And after everything our club has been through recently. Shameful 😔

Like I say, if it’s true, identity them, fine them, and ban them for life.

Burton lost 5-2 tonight so perhaps that 6-5 game that we have threatened will finally happen, I doubt I would put a quid on 0-0.

No defensive midfielder yet again coming back to haunt us!! Whatever formation we play, if we had someone in there who can tackle properly, nip in and break up the opposition attacks, and provide some cover in front of our defence and let the talented attacking players do their thing safe in the knowledge that extra cover was there then I'm sure things would be much tighter.....

....but no, KR opted not to bring one in.....maybe his biggest mistake....yet will he ever admit it?

We're conceding far too many goals for our own good at the moment. I thought after the Charlton and Crewe games that the defence were getting the idea but clearly not.

Agree with the coaching thing pointed out earlier, what do our defensive experts Mousinho and Short tell them to do?! 🤣

Identify them, fine them, and ban them for life. Scum.

If it happened you mean. Not one person who was there has confirmed they heard it. Obviously the flare did happen.

Opted not to or wasn't able to?

Bit of both, problem with Karl is he adopts this idea of having versatile players for more than one position rather than concentrating on bringing in players who naturally play that position. Not having 2 left backs and 2 right backs is a prime example.

A chastening loss that, to be fair. Feels very self-inflicted. We sat back and allowed them onto us in the first half, and in conditions like that you always felt a bit uneasy with that as a game plan. One slip and they’re in, as we saw. And time wasting that early is always, always asking for trouble. Goals all avoidable (never got set after the set piece for the first and left wide open for the second) or unstoppable, which is frustrating. I do think it’s the result of the schedule - thought KR spoke sense on the radio by pointing out we’ve had four long trips on four of the last five Tuesdays, which gives little time for recovery or training. Suppose the good news is no more Tuesdays for the rest of the year.

Jury still out on Brown for me. By no means bad but it feels like we do miss something without Moore in there, a calmness. Seddon I worry about. I don’t think he’s our strongest LWB, j think that’s Williams based on recent performances. And given we all said he was more of an LWB when he was being caught out at LB, where does that leave him? Also seems to be suffering from a real dip in confidence. Compare that moment second half where it came to him in space on the edge of the box and he took a touch and passed it inside with the putting-his-laces-through jt at the Abbey on opening day.

Browne I thought looked superb though. Absolutely shagged after about 30 mins but that’s to be expected. Adds a bit of physicality that we maybe lack up top with just Matty. Thoughts Stevens kicking from hand was decent too. Can’t speak to the actual keeping, didn’t get a good look at the two down the other end and not sure a lot you can do about a belter like that.

Someone mentioned before the game that they were worried the game would be too big for such an inexperienced ref and so it proved. First half just seemed to completely lose his head. Seemed like he was guessing at every coming together. Fair play to the home fans though, they seemed to really get in his head. And fair play to them in general to be honest - comfortably the best home crowd I’ve heard all season and struggling to think of a better one in my time following oxford. After their first that place was absolutely rocking, you’d have put your house on a second coming before half time. Proper twelfth man stuff.

Very disappointed to hear that there may have been some racially motivated chanting at the referee. I didn’t hear any myself, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen by any means. It occurred to me before the game that there are surprisingly few BAME referees, but thinking about it more it sadly doesn’t surprise me. We know the racial abuse black players experience in football grounds and I think you’d have to be a sadist to put yourself through the abuse referees get literally every weekend. The prospect of a combination of the two I can imagine is enough to put off anyone of that demographic from pursuing it as a career, which is very depressing.

Results tonight all bad for us. Wednesday flying. It feels like a disappointing night all round, but in the grand scheme of things, lots to be optimistic about and to look forward to.

DId they definitely chant that? That’s pretty serious, I’d be looking for some arrests if so.

Anyway whose fault was the game? I didn’t feel like the stress of watching that tonight.
