Reliably informed by my Cardiff ITK that Kion Etete is close to joining them so may need to a new name to circulate! As with anything it’s all rumour until he turns up somewhere I suppose.

Genuinely interested - if Taylor needs a strike partner, what's the formation? 3-5-2 and Browne, Murphy, Jones, Wildschut all on the bench or... wingers playing wing back? 4-4-2?

Probably not too dissimilar from when we were rolling with Taylor and Baldock last season and hitting around 3 goals a game for a period. Trouble was we were exposed at the back on a few occasions especially down the left but absolutely devastating going forward. We definitely can shape a two man attack with the midfield we got but with Long and Seddon, it would have to be 4-4-2 as they aren't defined wing-backs.

Two games which showcased the formations ideally were the 4-2 (4-4-2) against Cambridge and the 3-5-2 4-1 against Burton off the top of my head. Since then we've lost Sykes, Williams, Whyte and Holland though.

I think everyone was happy with the 3-5-2 last year.

The main change to our squad since then is on the wing. I'd guess we have invested a lot of money out there on very attacking players.

3-5-2 might get the best out of Taylor, but it might shackle the likes of Browne, Murphy, Jones etc.

Also means we need a strong plan B if Baldock gets injured.

4-4-2 could be goals galore with Brannagan and McGuane in the middle and four very attacking players around them, probably no room for Bodin or Henry to get much of a look though.

If you play Matty Taylor alone up front in a decent League One side, which creates chances, and he plays every game of the season, he will get you 20+ goals. He’s a very good poacher at this level. I don’t think anyone would argue with that.

However he will look isolated at times, especially against the better teams. He’ll have games where he does almost nothing, and is totally anonymous. He doesn’t have a huge amount of strength, pace and power, so he looks much better when he’s paired with another striker and can use his clever movement to pull defenders around and find spaces in the box, rather than alone up front trying to control long balls hit up to him and labouring against two massive centre backs, getting smashed in headed challenges and running himself ragged trying to close down, having almost no support, and not being taken off no matter how tired he is.

Matt Taylor has scored 56 goals in 3 seasons playing as a lone striker in virtually every game. Yet now we've got posts on here saying that he can't play up alone!!
What we need is not a partner for Taylor but an alternative when we need something different. Maybe someone big and aggressive.

Some people are quick to right off a player because he had a quiet game with no support from midfield.

We definitely need another striker, even 2 if Baldock is out for longer. And I'm not against playing 2 upfront. But Matty is more than good enough to lead the line on his own when required.

Thing is, the system is called one up front but when it works well there are wingers swarming around, so he’s not isolated

When we are on top and supporting him in and around the box he is outstanding. Its when under the cosh and we need an outlet either pace so we can put the ball over the top or bigger to hold it up while Matty struggles to make any impact as those are not his strengths

Ideally, we need another alternative/partner for Taylor and the vision from the manager to use them.
Even yesterday he could have chucked on O`Donkor alongside MT or replaced him.
There was nothing to lose from trying.

I think this will be KR’s last season with us, and his stubbornness will be his downfall.

No he isn‘t against the top sides who are strong defensively. We’ve seen too many performances like yesterday from him against the better sides. We might as well have played with ten men yesterday, he made no contribution at all.

What we need is a player who can either partner Taylor or play as an alternative to give us something different. Two scenarios. Horse's for courses and all that.

Not with the wages we now seem to be paying.

I agree, but to get to contract talks, the club need to submit a bid that will be accepted.

If we’ve offered less than £500k Plymouth are right to reject it. Portsmouth bought Colby Bishop for that price from Accrington, and Hardie scored more last season than Bishop.

So we’ve had a bid turned down for Ryan Hardie, a tall quick striker who would make a great alternative or partner for Taylor. Assuming we don’t go back with another bid and move on to other targets, who is out there of a similar style and calibre? Possibly one for @Shosho

Hardie played yesterday and was subbed
