It’s great to get Murphy over the line to join Findlay, McGinty, Wildschut and the others who have returned or signed new deals.
However, I do think it’s still premature to be getting giddy at the business we have done and should refrain from considering ourselves genuine promotion contenders until the following has taken place;
1) two new full backs who are signed with a view to starting in our best Xl
2) A genuine holding midfielder who can be disciplined in the position (think Camara at Plymouth who bossed both games against us). It remains to be seen whether that is McGuane but I’d argue there has been nothing to suggest that is really his game, so far.
3) competition for Taylor and Baldock is signed. An alternative to the ‘fox in the box’ and someone with a bit of presence who will impose themselves on the opposition.
So far, the recruitment has been solid and you can’t argue with the additions - if they stay fit they’ll become assets for the football club. But, I would reserve judgment on the window until it closes. Robinson hasn’t yet addressed the balance of the squad and until that happens, I can’t help but think we’ll fall short of promotion, again. Here’s hoping he’s learnt the lessons of the last 2/3 seasons.
