Home Match Day Thread 12/02/2022 L1: OUFC v Bolton Wanderers

So we've got a free week now with the next game being next Saturday maybe spend a couple of days sorting the defence out some of our defending today was school boy... How many more bad days are we going to have at the office that's what I out last Tuesday down as...

It’s been said many many times - but KR’s idiotic transfer window has done for us.
If things do go tits up this season, I think questions definitely need to be asked about why all our transfer activity happened at the last minute of the transfer window (and even beyond)? It does seem to happen quite a lot under Karl’s watch unless my memory is playing tricks on me.

Very frustrating.

Kane has not yet found his feet since returning from his ban, which is worrying. If only he had CamBran's engine and consistency.

Then again, if he did, he'd be in the Prem!

On the plus, Bodin was tremendous and must start from now if fit, surely? We don't have anyone close to his quality of delivery.

It seems we are not capable of killing a game off. We simply don't have the personnel to do it. We play one way...and that is hoping we score one more than the opposition. High risk, but high reward strategy...when it works.

I don't think it matters when it was done but rather who we got in. I do think defensively we didn't get it right but haven't done since the summer. I like Robinson but his ability to balance a squad is an area of weakness.

I really wonder what defensive work is done during the week, because we have no shape, they get pulled out of position so easily, and concede such sloppy goals, due to sheer naivety.

I've been beaten up on here for asking that question.

Anyway, I think there are 3 issues that need to be addressed now (the transfer window is a ship that's sailed):

Seddon isn't a full-back and has very poor defensive capability for a wing-back.

Moore doesn't read the game; he's competent with stuff that's coming at him but his anticipation is poor.

Our midfield doesn't know how to defend.

As the Irish man said 'I wouldn't start from here' but here we are. Since we don't seem to train defending as a team I suggest we play 3 at the back - Long (as captain, he does read the game and he's more of a leader), Moore and Mcnally, and Seddon and Forde as wing-backs. The panic signing can cover the 3 and I suppose Williams can cover the wing-backs.

Otherwise it's hard to see how we are going to stop shipping goals against half-decent teams.

You cannot concede the number of goals that we do and expect to get promoted.

17 goals leaked in 9 games
12 point from a possible 27

Our inability to defend properly is seriously hindering our progress. People suggesting that we should adapt our playing style to keep clean sheets need to wake up. The squad that has been built, does not have the players within it to adapt! We have ‘ball players’ not blockers.

I’m all for expansive football but just look at the players available. We are incredibly one dimensional when we haven’t got the ball and it WILL cost us promotion this season.

All the clap trap about exciting, attacking football needs to stop, now. We need to win games by whatever means possible. It isn’t acceptable to accept that because we have nice players in forward areas, we can sacrifice our collective defensive responsibilities.

Robinson has built this squad, it is all his. If, IF we fail to make the play offs then serious questions need to be asked about his ability to build a balanced squad because right now, this squad simply isn’t.

Football has two facets - attack and defence. You cannot continue to just expect to our score the opposition 3-2 every week. It’s naive at best.

He's a good man manager and motivator.

When we come up against a good manager he is often out-thought. We have a job done on us tactically frequently.
Being a good man manager and motivator is a much tougher skill. You need all of it, of course, but don’t underestimate that part of the job - it’s a huge part of what keeps managers in their job. Lose the dressing room and your tactics are wholly irrelevant.

I really don’t think it’s fair to say he’s tactically inept. I’m yet to see a better side on the ball than us on our day and I’ve only missed a handful of games. Admittedly we’re below average defensively but we’re not a side that obsessed over that - we don’t rely on it for points. Maybe it’s time we gave it a bit more care if automatic spots are a genuine ambition. we’ve had too many off days and on occasions we’ve been appalling so the challenge for him is to get that consistency. For me, that would take care of everything because I don’t think anybody can live with us when at our fluent best. But as I continue to point out, KR is no mug. His record is outstanding. his ceiling seems to be the play offs and he maybe needs to try something a little different to burst that ceiling. But plenty of managers operate successfully without a plan B, it’s all about doing Plan A better. That will always divide opinions. I personally think if we were looking for a manager right now, a CV like his is exactly where we would look.

There are some real pragmatists at this level who thrive on frustrating teams like ours and I think Karl would use that as a justification for having a lot of attackers in his squad - he wants options to change games. I think we have done better in those games this year but yes, a stronger, wiser defence should be a big focus for the summer.

He is still a relatively young manager and a very loyal one at that which is painfully rare in football now. Hate him or love him, we give ourselves a chance in every single game we play and for me, that’s all I ask as a fan; let me turn up thinking we can win on the pitch, and don’t go bust off the pitch! He gets it wrong sometimes but again I disagree on some of your comments because he’s rumbled some excellent coaches this season.

We've gone from proclaiming ourselves promotion material after whipping Gillingham 7-2 to now being out of the play offs, having other 'big' teams below us getting closer to us, no games in hand and now our team and style of play is being exposed in too many areas.

I hate to say it, but it is completely KR's fault. He has gambled too much on the big wages that players like Whyte/Kane/Browne/Holland/Winnall and possibly Baldock now are obviously earning, when the squad was absolutely desperate for some specialist full backs, a CB, a CDM (once Gorrin was known to be out for the season), and not being too top heavy with wide players and strikers even - with Taylor and Winnall was Baldock really necessary? I'm glad he's here but a couple of decent signings in the LB and CDM would have shored up the squad and strengthened in key positions, and reinforced the supporters faith in trusting KR.

We possibly have too many 'utility' players in the squad and certainly not enough quality in certain areas. I can't believe there weren't players out there we could have got (ie the LB Tomlinson who went to the Scummers.) Our poor recruitment this window will cost us and I think we'll struggle to compete with some of the teams around us.

Still, I'll be there at Charlton on Saturday, singing my heart out and supporting the team. It isn't easy being an OUFC fan though!🤣

Commiserations - but what a great game that could have gone either way and today the luck went with us.
Highly impressed with your midfield - the first midfield we've come up against since our change in system that has managed to win their fair share of ball and negate our attacking game. With both teams battling for control it was like pinball at times and neither side was allowed to express themselves often enough - Brannagan / Kane and Williams / Morley cancelled each other out - but despite that there were some cracking goals.
Bodin's free kick was one of those where you just have to stand back and admire - it was a beauty. His second was a defensive error allowing him on to his left peg at the edge of our box - madness because he's got a wand and he'd already shown it.
Our goals were not all typical. John's shot through the defenders' legs (Long?) we've seen before but Fossey - who missed a host of good chances with his favoured right foot in our last game, managed to find the top corner with his left and that surprised us as much as it did Stevens.
Fossey crossing for Baka for the counterattack goal is more familiar territory but at the end of the day it could have been 6 - 6.
Pleased for Baka because up until that point he had been in McNally's pocket - and McNally was brilliant in general today - what a defender!
Today was a game of chess and even though neither team was allowed to play as expansively as they'd like, the goals were all excellent and it was a great advert for League 1 football.

Good luck for the rest of the season!

I believe he’s good. Just not excellent and we need someone exceptional to get us promoted in a competitive league. ‘Good’ gets you into the top half and into the playoffs, tops. ‘Excellent’ gets you autos.

He’s had a pretty much unbroken spell of management roles since 2010. Five playoffs campaigns shows he’s good. One promotion shows he’s not excellent.

The worry is that he constantly tries to do things perfectly that he misses the essentials. We can play some stunning stuff at times and blitz teams when we’re in the mood but equally overlook the defence and any defensive minded midfielder options in January.

I like the bloke but it’s day like this that I question whether he has it in him to get us promoted.
How much more do we give him, if and it’s a big if we get into the playoffs this season then it has to be 3rd time if kit time for a change?

Yep I agree, my point is that it all seems a bit rushed and panicy at the end. No offence to either of them but I struggle to believe we have to be patient and wait until the last hours of the window to sign the likes of Brown and Smyth. Or even Baldock for that matter. Why not get them in earlier? The sooner the better I wouldve thought? Looking in from the outside It all just feels like theres a lack of coherence or planning which surely cant be the case?

For me it's not about style of play it's about managing a game properly. We can obviously set out to dominate the ball and play expansive stuff, but at certain points during the game we need to have the ability to keep it tight for a spell, e.g. full-backs tuck in, midfield sits etc. We don't need to throw the baby out with the bath water but we need to have a bit more game awareness and adaptability.

Not a lot to like about that game. Going ahead twice at home and losing is pretty chastening. We didn’t play that badly, there were positives - Bodin is in amazing form, we did miss two one on ones, Sykes should have scored that header and I think Seddon probably looked as good as he has done in a while - but this has been a bad week.

I’m generally very pro-KR. love his passion, love the way his teams play when on form, and love how successfully we have generally been under him. But today I did start to wonder whether his teams perhaps flatter to deceive. I caught myself first half, after we put together a nice passing move, thinking ‘god this side can be good’. But we played that first half like a cup game. There was absolutely no game management, the midfield was non-existent, and quite frankly conceding (at least) twice in so many games in a row is really very bad. It’s how we played for the run in last year and it’s just not sustainable.

What has happened to Herbie Kane? Ever since that red card at Lincoln he’s been an absolute shadow of the player who dominated every midfield he played throughout the autumn. We completely lost the midfield today, and part of that was the formation (I know Bodin dropped in to play a sort of 8/10 hybrid, but we missed the buzziness of Sykes and Brannagan mopping up the second balls). But part of that was also Kane just looking that half second off the pace, particularly in second balls.

Gavin Whyte is becoming a very difficult player for the club I think. He did some excellent things, and gives us an outlet and pace that few other players do in the side at the moment. But he has to score at some point. That one on one seemed to cause his head to drop and the ball in second half, played back straight to the Bolton striker, was just baffling. He gives a lot in terms of on the ball ability and capacity to stretch an opposition defence. But his end product just isn’t there at the moment. He had that run around Christmas of getting some good assists, and he did technically get one today, but I’m not sure he does enough to start at the moment.

Bodin’s post-match comments j thought we’re interesting. The veiled ‘well I’ve been match fit all season’ in response to a question regarding his form ‘since he’s been match fit’ I didn’t like to hear. And his comments confirming that he was asked to play as an 8 today with CB were a bit worrying. He was obviously our goal scorer today, but I think he only works as a 10 / second striker. As I’ve said, we lost the midfield today, and if it was obvious we had to move to a midfield three, he should probably have been sacrificed.

Thought we had a bit of a Homer ref (for once). Thought there was a definite foul in the build up to Bodin’s second. Bolton we’re giving him a lot of stick and probably fairly from where I was sitting.

Bolton looked fine without being great. Bakayoko looked strong all game and Charles is a very good player at this level. Their 5 I found very amusing. Absolute peak lower league centre back. Utter unit, will defend all day long, but was about as good on the ball as I am. Did the job though - we got absolutely no change out of any of our many set piece deliveries (apart from one, obviously!).

I’m getting a little bit worried about playoffs. I think it’s fine not having a CDM if you’re relying on Kane controlling the game from the base of midfield. But when he’s off it, we leave ourselves so, so exposed. And he is at the moment, and we don’t have another option. The table is starting to look worrying. I think the worst thing about this week is it has tainted the two 3-2s. It’s difficult not to look at them now and think, not that we showed real resilience there to dig deep and get a win, but instead that we got ourselves out of jail with late winners. We’ve been good about not losing three in a row though recently, so looking forward to Charlton.

Conceding goals is not all about 2 or 3 players. The same way scoring goals is not all about strikers. I agree we’re a little soft centred at the moment but in fairness we’re not handing out regular chances. But those we have offered have been taken recently which might point to us being a bit naive. Teams know when they play against us they will need to be patient and clinical and this week, last week and the week before we’ve played very strong sides who will do that.

Today Bodin shot and scored, were shouting at our team to shoot, shoot and shoot what do they do? Pass it try and walk it in but lose possession.

Then you clearly know nothing about football. I have watched every single minute of every single league game this season. Do me a favour, tally up the amount of unforced errors between McNally and Moore in the past 10 games. If you know what you are looking for and understand the game you will see what I mean.
Which of today’s goals were they at fault for?

McNally has been brilliant, that’s almost universally acknowledged. Seddon has been at fault for more goals this season than Moore and McNally put together. Long has also been at a lower level than those two.

You can get as upset at you want, but our centre backs are not the reason we’re conceding so many goals.

Absolute nonsense. Long wasn’t at his very best, Seddon certainly wasn’t poor and Kane, I thought, was very good.

One way I always try and evaluate player performances in a tightly fought game, like today, is to ask myself would I be picking anyone out for a poor game had it been us grabbing the late goal - as it could easily have been. I thought, back to front, we were pretty good and no individual deserves digging out based on that.

Yes, mistakes were made but more collectively than individually. At Accrington I think a few didn’t do themselves any favours but I can’t have it today. We were decent and unlike the Wednesday and Pompey games it wasn’t to be our day.

Sh*t happens, we move on.

Kane very good??! Cmon!

He was stand out poorest performance. Constantly losing possession and his control of the ball today was woeful.
