Transfer News January 2021/22 Transfer Window

I wonder if KR speaks to his family in the way he speaks in front of a camera or microphone.

Mrs R: “Wanna cup of tea, Karl?”

KR: “Well, I do but I also think that perhaps I don’t because what is tea really and is it right for me at this time? I mean it would be easy for me to drink, and I am thirsty, but the tea needs to the right brand and price and also want to be consumed. Then there is the method of brewing, which of course you do correctly, but I’ve seen it done badly by others and that leaves me fuming. Also, are you wearing a yellow shirt?”

Mrs R (internal monologue: “FFS, just say yes or no”

KR: “I also want to pay tribute to…” (insert organisation here)

Mrs R screams.
You missed the ten minute digression about how we as a club like to do things the right way, and how certain people, no naming names, etc etc.

Why is there this obsession to provide competition for Seddon when Ruffles went unchallenged for season after season at left back ? I’m all for like for like competition if it’s attainable but I can‘t ever recall the clamour, every window, for another left back when Ruffles had the shirt.

Because Ruffs was a defender who got forward and was fairly sound defensively. Seddon is seemingly a midfielder who occasionally gets back - and that is leading to us being vulnerable down that side. Sheffield Wednesday were noticeably concentrating on that area. So we need at least the option of a more defensively minded player in that area of the pitch (or an left sided midfielder who can and actually will drop back when Seddon is AWOL).

It's not just about competition, but having a genuine alternative option due to injury, suspension, and lack of form, something that occurred when Ruffels was here, and when he couldn't play, we really struggled to replace him.

Seddon is ok, but in my opinion is a major weak link in defence, and there is much better out there in my opinion, and if he gets injured or suspended, we have to start juggling the defence about, and as has been shown on more than one occasion, due to lack of genuine effective cover, it's square pegs in round holes, particularly so if the few defensive options available are already covering for injuries or suspensions.

It's basic common sense, to have more than one option for each position, but for some reason, it's something that is consistently neglected every season, particularly in defence.

I think we need to make sure this window brings in:
1 x Left back
1 x Striker
1 x Defensive midfielder

Am I the only one who wouldn’t be that upset if we have missed out on Browne? Still gives me shivers thinking back to Wembley when he stood hand on hips as Wycombe broke from a throw in for the penalty. Yes a quality player but inconsistent and a questionable attitude? fingers crossed for some transfer movement this week. On a side note a club over here was put off by Coopers wages re coming on loan
I think Browne was usually rather hardworking. Wouldn't describe him as inconsistent or having a questionable attitude. I've still never watched highlights of the Wycombe game back so can't really remember that incident too much, but think it tends to overcloud how diligent he was most of the time.

A counterexample, our late winner vs Southend:

I think we had more cover for our full backs during most of his time here. Gradually our defensive cover and competition has got less and less. We now have five specialist defenders to cover a back four plus Mousinho, I have a lot of time for him but I'm not clear why he was given a contract when his wage could go on quality full back cover.

So you’re telling me Robinson signed a midfielder as our sole left back the summer ? What a load of absolute nonsense. Seddon was a left back in the summer and he’s still a left back now. That would be ridicilous to sign an out of position player for a specialist position.

I have always had a problem with agents. I can't understand why clubs pay the agents fees when the agents are working for/on behalf of the players. Surely it should be the players paying the agents not the clubs. Or am I missing something?
You’re absolutely right. The players do pay their agents a percentage of their salaries in most cases, I believe. And on every fee-bearing transaction they take a cut for facilitating the move. In many industries the money they make from clubs could be seen as bribery because the agents will demand a certain fee to push a player in a particular direction. Not the most honest of professions is it…

The best and most ‘respected’ agents are those with an influence over the worlds top clubs. Which is an absolutely ridiculous thought in itself - how has it got so far that clubs are answerable to corrupt middle men looking to capitalise on the vulnerability of young footballers and their families who typically (not always before someone shouts at me) tend to come from lower income households.

Makes you wonder if they were actually allowed to finish their education and/or part of their initial scholarship was a low level business/financial competence course whether they could then have the confidence to make their own decisions and stand up to preying agents.
